I love this guy's commentary mixed with an ability to make it easy to understand. Just came across this channel and will definitely watch more videos! Thank you so much for the great tutorials!
I can't wait to try this! It's so simple yet looks so beautiful. It will be a great addition to the painting I'm currently working on though I use acrylics and not oils. Thanks so much for posting these tutorials they're really helpful (I've never taken art as a subject so all these different techniques are new to me)
for some reason I had a teary eyes watching your video.I think I miss my teachers...I love the way you teach, how you talk just like playing with kids no pressure at all ...Thank you so much for this...love it!!!
@AnimalCrossingsACCF Medium has two purposes 1. It helps the paints to spread smoothly onto a canvas AND it helps colors blend together well. Medium is typically made of linseed oil and turp, but each manufacturer has their own recipes and many offer mediums for oils, acrylics, water colors, water-mixable oils, etc....I think you're asking how long does an oil painting take to dry. This depends upon humidity, but 2 weeks to month is common.
OMG! What a beautiful and realistic waterfall! Love it and love the way you actually teach and talk. Make people be relax and get confidence to try. Will be watching more frequently your videos. I started painting as a hobby and now I'm teaching several people at my compound. They let me know everyday how much I know, how far I can go and I much I can improve.
I really enjoyed your video and l think you are a fun teacher! I have always wanted to know how to do beautiful waterfalls. Thank you so much ! I can't wait to play with my first one!
U add so much life to ur teaching with all the cheeeee ahhh! i dont know a thing abt painting jst stumbled on this vid but now i love art... i want to paint!!!!
@ssyndy1989 Actually, I used two blues. The first thing I did was coat a canvas with black gesso and let it dry. Once dry, I coated the canvas with a thin, even coat of clear oil painting medium. Over the medium I immediately painted a thin, even coat of Prussian Blue. Then with a mix of white and Pthalo Blue and a touch or two of medium I painted the waterfall and cascades.
you inspired me to paint again! you've done a great job in teaching me demos and also building up my confidence by the way you explain it. it was very fun!
@jasperbox90 Could be several things. Most common is too much pressure. Does the waterfall blur when you put in the base color, or when you highlight? If highlighting remember its just a like stroke. Almost like you're caressing a loved one's cheek without trying to put any pressure on it.
You are the best teacher, for oil painters in youtupe, I truly respect you, I got my passtion for oil painting back coz of your lessons and inrgy you add to the videos. Thanks alot.
I subscribed because I like the way he teaches, awesome! with the sound effects as well, literally taught me in seconds how to paint a waterfall I really appreciate it😊 thank you.
This is great!! i've seen few tutorials that actually explain little things like this properly, its a big help to us beginners :) And its catchy!! Makes it all the more exciting!
Thank you for this wonderful video on painting waterfalls....Never knew it could be so easy , I used to feel intimidated prior to watching this video....thank you so much
there is ox gall you can add to acrylic paint, but not to oils, and try using a soft hair hake brush, after several coats...to cover white, it's hard to get the dark blue, so do a coat, dry, do another...etc. Also try reversing your strokes, vertical, then horizontal, etc...hope this helps...
I made that first film over ten years ago with a Sony Home Movie Camera. I no longer remember what microphone we used. About 8 years ago I invested in commercial grade cameras and mics, light, green screen, and had a video studio built for me. Thankfully, we're much, much better now. Darrell
Great video, thanks. And you're not corny at all. It's very fun and relaxing actually. You're humor makes it enjoyable to watch. Plus we all know we secretly make those sounds too. Lol
@ElenaSaxena I findd it truly helps to make the sounds for those tough things to paint. It becomes and before you know it, you're painting beautiful waterfalls. Keep racticing.
Darrell Crow SIR YOU ARE JUST THE SUPERB ARTIST AND AMAZING TEACHER FOR ANYONE... CAN YOU DO ME A LITTLE FAVOR... WHATS THAT THING ON WHICH YOU SHOWED YOURS AMAZING LOVE OF ART ( i mean paper or what? )
nanda kishore it looks like a 12 x 12 stretched canvas that he painted Prussian blue over it before he did the waterfall. I emphasize size“ it looks like“ I could be wrong LOL
your fingers are playing like anything, each an every talents came from heavenly father.. its a god gift.. i love to learn many art from you.. kingly update more an more
So beautiful!!! My sister just got some acrylic paints and I want to try to paint as well. Ive never paint before but im sure with your videos ill learn in no time. Thank you so much :)
maururu,...beautiful!~im gonna try it...im assuming this is oil paint...ive been working with acrylic, its not satisfying me no more, im going to do oil...thankyou for inspiring...i love your voice.
Those are both excellent questions. On my website are one or two waterfalls that are looking straight on. What I will do is film a demo of how to do this for you. Give me a few weeks since we have a good backlog of questions. I might have to resort to releasing more than one video a week just to catch up.
First, I covered the canvas with black gesso and let it dry. Once dried cover the entire canvas with a 'thin' even coat of clear oil painting medium. Wipe off the canvas with a paper towel to take off the excess medium. Cover the entire canvas with an even, thin coat of Prusian Blue. You're now ready to paint.
@DarrellCrowStudioes I love Pthalo Blue for skies and mixing with other colours, but I thought Prussian was another name for Pthalo! Really liked your video because I have always had trouble with water. Adding to playlist!
Oh my God i am so loving it..You made my day Mr Darrel..I am gonen to try this ASAP. You get me subscribed. Your voice is so calm and easy to understand for a foreigner. Much love :)
@hinapooja I don't mind. I have 250 2 hour videos on how to paint. That's about 20-30 TH-cam clips per video. Can't put them all here, but I certainly can post a few so everyone has a chance to trey landscapes, seascapes, florals, tall ships, PopArt, Still Life, Wildlife, Pets, Portraits, Fantasy, and more. It's litterally a ton of fun doing all of this for you guys.
Hi Sibel. This is oils and yes, you can do this technique in acrylic. What I have done is also posted how to do this very lesson in Acrylics in this channel. So you can start painting this right now in Acrylics.
@DarrellCrowStudioes ,,,claro !!! muchas gracias x responder !!! aun continuo con el !! creo q no me esta quedando tan mal !!! gracias x compartir sus conocimientos la pintura es lo mejor!!! saludos
I'm sure you've heard this many times from a lot of people, but I would like to mention that your video is not only helpful in learning how to paint waterfalls easily, but also is very entertaining.... especially the sounds you make... I am going to try this myself too :)) with the swisssh sounds ;o)
Hey, I am just starting painting and am using acrylic paint I tried the lake trick and it didn't quite work is there something I can add to the paint to make it brush more smoothly :) Thanks for the awesome video though I skipped so many learning lessons from this one video
@jesselin10 Sure, but it'll be sometime before I can get to it. I'm finishing up my two books and we're producing 36 hours of film on painting the Colorado countryside. I've posted photos of the paintings on my blog and facebook, twitter sites
As a beginner, what dark canvas or paper can I buy that is dark and not expensive like canvas. I don't want to pay alot for canvas just to throw away after practice. You are great by the way! A great teacher!!!
IO have a playlist of how to paint these scenes in Acrylics on this youtube channel. That includes this wat5erfall. I get the same effects with acrylics as I do oils, but there are some differences you'll need to know. So feel free to play all of the films on the acrylics playlist. Thanks for the question.
Did you paint your canvas black or buy it black? I am so amazed at your skill. You explain very well. I will try and remember to keep paint on my brush too, lol!
a few things going on here which I dig. 1) you sound like W.S.Burrows. 2) there are elements of Brett Whiteley going on with your line. 3) you technique is true to the medium. ( that is, rather than trying to copy reality, you are letting your medium tell tell the story ) 4) you are passionate about what your doing …..shhhhhhhhhhwwosssh….I recommend you look at Brett Whiteley, the great Australian artists renditions of waves. Nice work Darrell.
I have a question about the canvas preparation tell me again what you did to prep your canvas in using the liquid clear and the black back ground. I need your help

I'm wondering the same. Experimenting with both.

THANX! SIR i have a question is that a fan brush you are using?
I have a question about the canvas preparation tell me again what you did to prep your canvas in using the liquid clear and the black back ground. I need your help
very pretty amazing video thanks
I believe you're referring to the "Fan Brush" I used a bristle #3 Fan Brush to paint the waterfall
It depends upon the paper in the black sketch book. Is it designed for ol painting. If it doesn't specifically state this, than don't use it.
