Such a beautiful lady with the voice of an Angel. My Husband died recently & this version of the song will be played at his funeral. If only there were more singers today like Mary Hopkin, you can hear & understand every word she sings. Just Beautiful.
I remember the Byrds number 1 hit in November, 1965; the year I enlisted in the Air Force. I did not hear Mary Hopkin sing this but now I know that she did justice to the song also. Both versions are wonderful.
I am American so forgive me if I am wrong, but Mary Hopkin seems to embody the spirit of Britain. A soul of compassion and of strong will. The world owes much to the will and compassion of the British spirit.
+Greg Boardman ...a little while back i played a song to a friend of a friend and he burst into tears listening to it. When asked why, he gently replied "this girl reminds me of a real singer, Mary Hopkin, who i have always loved and adored...because she could REALLY sing...and hold a note...what has happened to all the real singers??...the words to the song helped bring forth those tears as well and took me back in time" The song is called SWEET LADY ENGLAND by HANNAH DRURY.........more of an ANTHEM...if you are English and reading this, you may just FIND it...or maybe you'll discover it whether you are English or Albanian!!!!...or SWEDISH, or SWISS, or from NORWAY, etc, etc, etc.... Greg...you are spot on....Mary Hopkin=Beautiful voice of an angel...another who is right up there is a new young singer called JASMINE LAMPORT with three songs..BREATHE, STRONG and WHY?...................all ORIGINAL and beautiful.
I can remember learning this piece at a church girls auxiliary that we sang during a service one Sunday. Because the particular Anglican church I went to was pretty stiff about following the proper service guidelines it was quite a thing to do. It a beautiful piece.
PERFECT VOICE, I REMEMBER MY MOTHER VICTORINA REYES MAHAL PO NAMIN KAYO NAY, KAKANTA PA PO TAYO NG MGA PABORITO MONNG AWI, NASAULO KOPO ITO MULA PAGKABATA
First heard and loved this song when The Birds released it and never realised that Mary also released it...her lovely voice would lend itself to many songs.
King Solomon is the original author of these words in Ecclesiastes 3.1 - 8 Pete only wrote the melody and added the words Turn Turn Turn, and " A time of peace. I swear it's not too late" Pete sold it to the Limelighters and The Byrds which he preferred Pete's promoter told him that he couldnt just keep writing protest songs, so he arranged this one and it was huge on Billboard for the Byrds for many weeks
Turn, Turn, Turn - for some reason this reminds me of the book of Ezekiel : "Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel? "
Ecclesiastes 3 (The Old Testament) 1 To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under the heavens: 2 A time to be born and a time to die, 3 A time to kill and a time to heal, 4 A time to weep and a time to laugh, 5 A time to cast away stones and a time to gather stones together, 6 A time to get and a time to lose, 7 A time to rend and a time to sew, 8 A time to love and a time to hate.
The Byrds did the definitive version of this song but Mary's take on it is a very fine runner-up; it's an excellent song whoever sings it. And may it never be too late for there to be a time of peace.
Can I please bring a conclusion to this seemingly endless debate as to her teeth? In this video she was absolutely stunning. Shortly afterwards they 'sorted' her teeth out. Thereafter she was absolutely stunning. There we have it then!
Well? In conclusion not nearly as controversial as Shanes of the Pogues...but at the end of the day wasn't really a problem because was more focused on the beautiful voice
Mary Hopkin is doing the original folk version by Prete Seeger, who wrote the song. The song was produced by Paul McCartney and released as a B side on Apple.
+Kevin Clark Why are you all mentioning Pete Seeger? He was not the author. The words of this song are simply taken from the Book of Ecclesiastes, chapter 3 in the Bible.
I best remember her as Lirazel in Peter Knight and Bob Johnsons album "The King of Elfland's Daughter" based on the novel by Lord Dunsany. There were quite a few other notable people on that album too.

What a perfect voice performing a perfect song!. The production is pretty sparse, Maybe not as powerful as the Byrds, Seeger, Judy Collins, The Seekers and the Simon Sisters versions, but a beautiful perfect voice doing a perfect song.

45 years ago a cousin died and this was the first time I heard this song. A since that time I think of him, when I hear it and get tears in my eyes 😢

Zauberhafte Interpretation des gleichnamigen Songs der Byrds.
Gänsehaut..da ist sie wieder !!!!
My high school crush when I lived in England, I saw her perform twice and loved both times!
I remember the Byrds number 1 hit in November, 1965; the year I enlisted in the Air Force. I did not hear Mary Hopkin sing this but now I know that she did justice to the song also. Both versions are wonderful.
My heart and mind soar under the influence of her voice.
Voice of an angel
Cymry,a land of bards.

I am American so forgive me if I am wrong, but Mary Hopkin seems to embody the spirit of Britain. A soul of compassion and of strong will. The world owes much to the will and compassion of the British spirit.
Yes you are wrong, but I'll forgive you.
Not only a beautiful voice but she plays that guitar without fault and changes her chords without effort.
Only fools mock beauty....... This is true beauty.
@Zac Ariah And the intellectually challenged share your opinion.
@Zac Ariah please be a pre teen.
@Zac Ariah appreciation, and arrogance are different things.

The most beautiful voice of all time. Flawless.
She sings like a angel in the sky

Her singing always makes me feel better.
I can remember learning this piece at a church girls auxiliary that we sang during a service one Sunday. Because the particular Anglican church I went to was pretty stiff about following the proper service guidelines it was quite a thing to do. It a beautiful piece.
Beautful and delicate guitar playing - unbelievable voice, this girl should have been massive, but like a true gem, we never saw enough of her
She saw through McCartney and went home.
@@brianclayton1039 a bit cryptic for me, could you elaborate?
So ture!! She is a gifted singer, with an aura rarely seen. Love her music and her talent.
Thanks for your kind words.
Mary has a clear beautiful voice . She sounds like an Angel.

Such a beautiful and captivating voice. Her singing takes me back to when there was more meaning in everything including song lyrics.

Beautiful phrasing! And you can tell she really connects with the lyrics.

I also thought it to be something precious to human nature..like psychology and procreation..etc.

'there's a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven..'

Quite easily a milestone. Thanks for the beautiful recording.
Lyrics from the Holy Bible. Great song with fully authencity. Love it.
Really, "lyrics from the Holy Bible", does it say in the Bible "a time to kill"; does this not go against one of the Ten Commandments?
Voice of an angel.
Mary Hopkin...so angelic 💖

Ecclesiastes 3 KJV Bible. The lyrics were taken from there.
True!
wisdom that helps us probe what life is, and what we should make of it.
And Mary`s voice was taken from heaven...
They are wonderful words!
Can I please bring a conclusion to this seemingly endless debate as to her teeth? In this video she was absolutely stunning. Shortly afterwards they 'sorted' her teeth out. Thereafter she was absolutely stunning. There we have it then!
If she was stunning before with bad teeth, should she not be stunning and a half after getting her teeth fixed?
Well? In conclusion not nearly as controversial as Shanes of the Pogues...but at the end of the day wasn't really a problem because was more focused on the beautiful voice
She is stunningly beautiful with or without teeth .. her soul is in her voice ..
Absolutely Brilliant!!
Gorgeous that's what I call is the beauty of the mother earth
What a voice from an icon.
This was the flip side of the single "Those Were the Days". I like this simple cover.
A singing angel.
Wow, a real Singer!!! Such a rare thing nowadays !!!Lol
The "Byrds", you're an angel soaring like a bird...
Mary Hopkin is doing the original folk version by Prete Seeger, who wrote the song. The song was produced by Paul McCartney and released as a B side on Apple.

She is makes me cry x
Found this song from reading “Fundamentals of the faith” by George M Phillip.
Beautiful song.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-8
True, The Byrds recoded this song but Pete Seeger wrote it. All good versions.
+Kevin Clark Why are you all mentioning Pete Seeger? He was not the author. The words of this song are simply taken from the Book of Ecclesiastes, chapter 3 in the Bible.
Your right, but Pete Seeger composed it into a song from what I understand. I do enjoy all the versions. Great song.
Her voice is a homage to Peter Seeger. Good man.
I best remember her as Lirazel in Peter Knight and Bob Johnsons album "The King of Elfland's Daughter" based on the novel by Lord Dunsany. There were quite a few other notable people on that album too.
Very interesting, can you tell us more about the album in question? I'm not familiar with it.

Such an amazing voice! :-)
I agree, she was trained by the Beatles, particularly Paul
There she is,playing the guitar that George Harrison gave her, that makes my day....
MÚSICA DOS DEUSES.
I REMEMBER it now.
This is the best version of this song ever recorded, exceeding The Byrds, exceeding Judy Collins, exceeding even Judith Durham of the Seekers.
@Alli Ann Weaver Only two albums, Post Card and Earth Song / Ocean Song. Remasterd CDs available at major CD stores now.
Sencillamente: magnífica
@harvey1954 This is Mary's "before Apple" song. She had already released an album including this sung in Welsh. This is the Apple's promotion vid.
