When I was growing up in South Texas the family routine was get at 6 am get ready for Mass after service was over head out to local meat market and buy 2 PD's of barbacoa and corn tortillas my mom would make the flour tortillas and salsa then watch some Johnny canales on t.v. you. Grab ure tacos on the go everybody busy doing something mom's going to HEB my dad is fire up his BBQ pit to cook some fajitas and chicken it's about 2 o'clock it's time to watch the Cowboys play were not the Walton's but life was not so busy that's what makes Texas so special from Brownsville to the Oklahoma border family, food, and football, that's Texas !!
This is the traditional way that barbecue was done in Texas, where the word bbq "pit" comes from (because it used to be a literal pit in the ground), and also where the word "barbecue" comes from (literally evolved from the word barbacoa). There are pictures of old school barbecuers cooking in a hole in the ground before the steel tank smokers, and before the indoor brick pits. So those of you barbecue enthusiasts out there need to check this place out. This is part of Texas history.

I lived in different parts of Texas from Alpine to Lubbock to Houston. Im originally from Pharr and I might be a little bias but STX has to have the best barbacoa in all of Texas. Besides the barbacoa, Texas is the greatest state in our country.
The first time I tried barbacoa was in Lubbock in 1987. Got a stack of corn tortillas, a pint of refried beans and a pint of barbacoa from Montelongos off the Clovis hiway. Been eating it ever since. Live SW Houston now and can get it many places. Was raised in Ft Stockton and never ever heard of it there even though it was largely Hispanic.
La baracoba más sabrosa del Valle !!!! Original true to its roots every time I get a chance I make the drive there like this weekend coming up can't wait for Sunday A.M......
Had Barbacoa in Brownsville at the flea market this morning. Just moved here. Best I have ever had. Brownsville is a foodie paradise 😋 Will visit Vera's very soon. On my list.
Update : Made it to Vera's. It IS the best of the best. Service is top notch. Meat is cooked to perfection. Tortilla are amazing. It is an absolute must when in Brownsville.
I got hungry just watching this video! I live in southeast Texas and there is no place around here with decent barbacoa. I will be down in Brownsville in September to try this place out.
The valley is like an enclave between two countries: United States and Mexico. Everything is different in the valley. Especially the food. Best part of the valley food are the breakfast morning tacos sold at Stripes.....fuken delicious and cheap.
Your standards must be really low, or you must be very young, to conclude that Stripes tacos are amazing. Eddie's tacos and Kan-n-Kegs in Pharr are a much better option. Heck, even Taco Palenque is much better, but more expensive than Stripes.
@@aggie7756 Eddie's tacos taste the same as stripes. I've had both. Only difference is you can get stripes tacos anywhere in the valley. Eddie's tacos are a bit overrated.

We used to have our own restaurant a couple of blocks from there (JJ's) which is now a tire shop I believe. Been gone from Brownsville since 91 but hopefully will be back soon. I remember this place as a small kid after going to church at Cristo Rey. Damn, talk about feeling nostalgic.

Barbacoa and BIG RED!!!! I think this should be 1 of the many States official Food! Plus avocados y salsa y pos corn or flour tortillas!!! Oh and chi-cha-ron-ies!! 🇺🇸🤠
Mr. Armando forgot to mention the BBQ was actually started by his Uncle Alfonso Vera on Fronton Street, from their his other Uncle Eduardo from VERA’S. Fruit & Meat Market on International Blvd he used to make it just like that & also those famous Tripas on Friday & Saturday. I was sad when he didn’t mention the rest of the VERA’S Family who really started all this but that’s ok at least a Vera got recognized for a tradition my uncle & grandpa started. 🥴
Sooo!!!!! Let me ax a silly question, Would a brisket cooked in a hole in the ground be considered a traditional barbacoa??? Or does it have to be a cabeza??
Very expensive at Veras. Everything sold separately including salsa and cilantro. Lots of places here that have good barbacoa. 12$ per lb with 10 tortillas and salsa.
Eating Barbacoa on Sunday morning is a tradition!
Definitely I buy my 2 pounds every Sunday.
Yes sir👍👍👍
Slavery was also an tradition. Abolish this filthy habit
It might sound crazy but I need to have flaming hot Cheetos aguacate and mex cheese 🙃

You need to move to some other place.
We would watch Domingo Pena, and I'm Filipino. Love the barbacoa, with onions and cilantro. Yum. 😆🌮🌯🍻🍺
Yea bro, but these guys are not the Vera's from back in the day.
The original Vera's was on International Blvd, n people would line up for the tripas the most. Tell me I'm wrong.
