Anthony Asuncion for this fob it is a separate battery. The display has a rechargeable lithium ion battery for the touchscreen and it's functions but if that battery depleted, you could still use the physical buttons

7 series comes with a display key standard since 2017 model year, and you can order it as an option for the 2018 5 series if you get the Remote Parking feature. You can order one for an i8 as well

first of what i mean with unsave watch this quiet easy....

then your phone need at least some battery power left to open otherwise you need to use the Keycard....
and then you need to turn off Bluetooth otherwise it use a bit of your accu and then you run out with the battery faster...
