- This technicolor drama stars screen beauty Natalie Wood and movie legend Gene Kelly. Set in New York, it's a story based on Herman Wouk's 1955's novel, 'Marjorie Morningstar'- all about a starry-eyed young woman's love affair with the theater and the wrong Mr. Right.
When i saw this movie in '58 I was 17. I was always drawn to Natalie Wood and this film gave her a grown up role. Her beauty and the song, A Very Precious Love, were enough to captivate me. Little did I know that in a few years with West Side Story and Splendor in the Grass that would increase and she would remain even after her a death a favorite that still brings strong feelings when I see her on screen.

@@angelacoleman6580 Natalie Wood's vulnerability was particularly noticeable in "Love With The Proper Stranger", which is my favorite of her movies. She and Steve McQueen were wonderful in that movie.
It's interesting that Steve McQueen married Ali MacGraw 10 years later. She too was a classically beautiful brunette like Natalie Wood.
Everyone is leaving out the brilliant acting by Martin Milner!!!!!! He waited for ❤her!!!!!!!!!! The ending was beautifully heaven!

I don’t know...if said Noel Airman looks like Gene Kelly I think I’ll chance it, even for a 46 year old Kelly. He was STILL SO HOT even then.
To his credit, Noel airman was very self-aware and honest in his relationship with Marjorie. He could have been more of a con artist. And when he was about to be, for candlelight dinner in his cabin, her uncle came in and firmly set him straight.
Happened to me, with a composer in LA.. that’s show biz ladies… “that’s a wrap” ( as they say) .. always chasing the illusion of fame… and ignoring all the love and goodness all around him. I gave up many a “ suitor” under his spell.. my bad ..

First saw it 65 years ago and loved it. Still do. Love another of her movies also, "The Searchers" with John Wayne. Was very blessed to meet her on my birthday, September 27, 1981 at Whompoppers Restaurant in Universal Studios where I worked as a cocktail waitress. She was there celebrating her daughter Natasha's birthday. She was very kind to me and wished me Happy Birthday. It was devastating to hear of her death two months later and even more so to hear how she died. It may never be known what really happened on that yacht to cause her to suffer such a horrific death but if it was not an accident, I hope those involved have had no peace in their lives.
More than her doomed romance with Noel, her relationship with her precious papa is what makes me cry. 😢 I miss my dad so much. He was a kind and gentle man.

I was 18 when I saw this. Always loved Gene Kelly, he broke my heart in this. Film has stayed with me all these years.

I haven't seen this movie since I was a teenager. It's not a great movie, but Natalie. You can't take your eyes off her. The emotions she projected, like her other more successful movies, was magic. She was beautiful. Rest in Peace dear Natalie Wood.
Natalie Wood as Marjorie Morningstar made me cry. She didn't know what a wonderfdul actress she was. May she rest in peace.

The last scene, her face showing more emotion than a thousand words could tell, and then the gaze in the mirror with the man who knew her heart from the start. How moving it is to see a film with quiet subtlety, trusting the viewers, leaving us room to feel and feel deeply.
I think the film differs from the nouvel, especially the ending which is somewhat sad. In the novel, Marjorie has a conventional marriage and become a shadow od herself but she does not marry Wally.

Just Natalie's face alone in the last scene watching Noel and her eyes was enough to make me cry, (again). Loved her to pieces since I was a young woman......watched Splendor In The Grass as a teen probably, captivated. Adore her and always will and still troubled by the circumstances of her death.
They divorced because she caught him with the butler. Ten years later, they remarried. She said, "Better the devil, you know."
Unfortunately, I believe she caught him again. She may have made a fatal mistake by saying she'd had it and was going to tell the world who RJ really was.
That would have ruined his career since he was toted as a ladies-man.
He never called for help and refused to turn on the lights. Another couple heard a woman crying for help and a man saying in a mocking tone that they were coming. They were in a boat themselves, and they couldn't see where the woman was. They tried calling the Coastguard too but didn't get an answer.
She was found early the next morning, floating in her red downfill jacket with wool socks on. Her bladder wasn't empty.
I don't understand how she kept those socks on in the water.
She was also covered in bruises.
He refused to identify the body and left in a helicopter.
He made the captain stay in-house for a year afterward.
Christopher Walken has never said a word about it.

This young man exercised patience, realizing it was important for this young woman to see the reality of what she was hoping for, would never happen, no matter how supportive she was. Real Life teaches us to beware of people living among us who will use us, abuse us, manipulate us, until they have no further use for us, and then move on to another victim. LOVE is a commandment from God, that some exploit for selfish reasons breaking hearts, destroying some people's self-confidence, and creating toxic personalities that turn into hurt people hurting other people. By the Grace of God, I have experienced love in its PUREST FORM, and can now distinguish between REAL LOVE and COUNTERFEIT LOVE. Don't give up on love. Just BEWARE of the wolves coming at you in sheep's clothing. We are living in an era where they are even greater in numbers. A lot of folks coming at you with bad intentions. Just playing games. Many are aware and CHECKING them; but still MATING with them, creating unnecessary drama and disappointment for themselves.
Natalie Wood could express feelings in few words, a gesture, a facial expression. She was captivating.
Years ago I went on a Herman Wouk reading spree after reading The Winds of War and War and Remembrance. Wouk was a great American author and WWII veteran.
I also loved the books The Caine Mutiny, and of course Marjorie Morningstar. I was delighted to learn there was a Marjorie Morningstar movie... and that it starred the great, beautiful Natalie Wood!
It's been one of my favorite comfort movies ever since. Thanks for sharing it.

Herman Wouk should have received the Presidential Medal of Freedom before he passed away. Not only did he serve in the Navy during WWII, but also he wrote several books set during the war. To me the most memorable were The Winds of War, and its sequel War and Remembrance. The Caine Mutiny was also an excellent book. Wouk had a special talent for drawing you into his stories and settings.
Wouk was an incredibly gifted author, who could be detailed without being tedious.....I loved all of the characters in his 'Winds' and 'Remembrance' books....Flawed people doing important things
I watched this film when it was first released and thought it was marvelous. Looking back now, I realize that the acting was awfully "hokey" but the message has not lost its power. Growing up requires one to become dis-illusioned, meaning that one gains the internal strength to discard illusions in favor of truth, no matter how painful the process is.

I agree everyone I've ever met has loved someone " inappropriate " and had sex that felt so right but they judged it as wrong. Knew their family and friends would not approve. But didn't care while their obsession blazed hot!!

A Man In A Net, she was fabulous in the role. I found out she was up for Lorene's role in Here To Eternity, promised it in fact just had to do the audition. The chair Monty Clift sat in in the scene where Pruitt meets Lorene is the exact chair that was Morticia Addams! Carolyn was gifted it post AF and kept it the rest of her life.
Thanks. Even though I saw her name at the beginning, I kept trying to think who Marsha was. There is a Hallmark actress that looks just like her, but I knew this character would be too old to be her.

This hearkens back to a bygone era in America, and cinema. I love it.
I have never even heard of this movie before! But 2 of my favs Gene and Natalie! What a combination, they had true chemistry. This is an incredible movie. Is not a sing/chance cheeky movie for Gene, instead it shows his acting creditability. This movie may have slow moments but they are necessary to the impact of the film. Honestly one of the best endings in a movie. This isn't a movie about fairytale love. No it is about real love good or bad that many of the viewers actually relate to. I'm sure this was not a box office hit but it one that has withstood the test of time, for you could honestly see a movie like this today. This is a movie I will watch at least once a year like a ritual holiday.

Society changed so much almost overnight. . It took a longtime for many of us to find our own values and not discoun t those of our parents completely. I didn't realize that some of the scenes were shot at Scaroon Manor. That's where a pretty Big Band singer named Susan Shepard met a guy, drummer Ken Hawk, back in 1946. Her real name was Lucille. He had finished at Juilliard on the GI bill and was already working as a musician. They married in 1947. I came along in 1948. Sister Val in 1952. Scaroon Manor..such memories.
Gene Kelley was the most fluid dancer ever. And to think, he could also sing and act -- A definite triple threat.

I saw this film many years ago, and was so captivated by it. Natalie wood is so magnificent in this film, so young and so beautiful. I adored her in every film she made. She left us too soon. @@poorthing As much as I loved Herman Wouk's novel "Marjorie Morningstar", I never could get interested in the movie. Something about it never got through to me. It was probably Gene Kelly cast as Noel Airman, because he looked nothing like the way Noel was described in the novel. It wasn't Natalie Wood because she was perfect as Marjorie. I remember reading the novel the first week of Christmas break right after President Kennedy was assassinated, when I was 16. Herman Wouk is still my favorite American novelist. He lived to be 104.
1st the Gowns / Dresses /Handbags were GORGEOUS. The music. LOVE Natalie Wood. I spent my weekend on a Very Cold Night watching CLASSIC MOVIES. This one made me cry. Chasing a man who could not make up his mind if he loved her chasing him not wanting to be found.He needs help but not hers if you love him stay away. Grow up he says to her and away she goes. I pulled this book off my older sister's bookshelf and read it when I was in junior high. I did a book report on it and my english teacher graded it and wrote next to the C that she gave me that it was inappropriate reading for a girl my age. LOL

Found the book on the big bookcase in the den when I was 13 (1963)... I think Mom & Dad got it as a "Book of the Month Club" selection. It was high up with others that were "off-limits" to me. So, after everyone was asleep, I would sneak downstairs, take it off the shelf and back to my room, where I would read another chapter, under the covers by flashlight, sneaking down again to replace it in the same sport... so Mom & Dad wouldn't know I was reading it. I guess they probably knew anyway! Don't remember when I saw the movie, but now that I've found it on TH-cam, I think I'll watch it again...
This made me laugh at what was considered risqué literature back in the 50's. GOD'S LITTLE ACRE, EAST OF EDEN, CATCHER IN THE RYE, MADAME BOVARY....

Someone many years ago told me to read the book. I don't remember who told me to read the book. I found it at a garage sale and have had it on the shelf. This synchronistically showed up and I had the time and inclination to watch. I loved the subtlety. I loved the character development. I understand the rebellion from surrendering one's soul to fit in and am thrilled I never gave in to it. I thought that was the scene of Dirty Dancing. Loved reading so many great comments. I love this film and have it on vhs. I just now saw it on here and am so pleased about that. The story is wonderful and Gene Kelly here is brilliant and is an extremely talented dramatic actor.
At 39:15 Marsha (Carolyn Jones, "Morticia" from the Addams Family 1964-66) says to Marjorie (Natalie Wood), "We'll compare notes when we're old and gray." Unfortunately, Carolyn died in 1983 at age 53, and Natalie in 1981 at age 43. Old and gray never happened for either of them.
I thought of that at exactly the same moment in the film. They would have had long fruitful careers left.
They were both great and left us way to soon.
These old technicolor movies are so beautiful and romantic. Beautiful orchestration, lovely , sweet and sensual, and then there's Natalie Wood looking so fresh, beautiful, unspoilt. I forgot about this movie, had to read the posts b4 I invested my time. It's so bittersweetly romantic with a twist at the end

That was a rollercoaster, but the ending was so worth it. Never heard of this movie, but I just had to watch it back to back. Beautiful story. Natalie Wood mesmerized me-I couldn’t take my eyes off her. The more I watch her movies the more I’m convinced she’s my favourite actress.

In addition, they have had fulfilling personal lives. Show business isn't for everyone, but it can be triumphant if you know how to navigate it.

I'm glad I stuck this movie out it was painful but the ending was great! Lol Noel was back on his element where he belonged & out of Marjories life & the guy who really loved her was waiting for her yayyyy!
I was Marjorie's age (18) when I saw this movie. Read the book when it initially came out. Watching the movie again (thank you for uploading it) I realized it should have been titled, "Everyone Loves Marjorie." Every man she meets falls for her. Even her father and uncle love her. Yes, she's lovely, but in real life that only takes you so far.
It's funny that at 18 I thought Kelly was perfect for the role. Now that I'm (much) older, I realize he looked too old to play a 32 year old. Still have a crush on him, though. Thanks for bringing back some interesting long forgotten personal memories for me.

I seem to remember this movie being about 3 hrs long. I hope it isn't chopped up to bad. It's 2 hrs later, seems some scenes were shortened, but the editing was so the story still flowed very well. This like Noels play had a bitter sweet end. And that made this a success.
According to Charles Strouse, composer for Broadway classics Annie and Bye Bye Birdie, Green Mansions resort was the inspiration for Marjorie Morningstar - see pages 48-49 of Strouse's book 'Put on a Happy Face'. Strouse was in the theater company there for several summers in the early 1950's. Much of the music for Bye Bye Birdie was first performed at Green Mansions revues.
In the 1930's Green Mansions helped launch the careers of Lee Strasberg, Clifford Odets, Elia Kazan, Sanford Meisner, Stella Adler and many others. Green Mansions was the Summer home of The Group Theater in 1933. Green Mansions is about 10 to 15 miles south of Schroon Lake.
I only know of the film with Audrey Hepburn called Green Mansions. Perhaps the title came from a resort. I recall reading that the director went to South America to look for locations, but the jungle was too dark for the story idea, but it worked. I don't know if the title is related or a coincidence.

There were many places like that resort in the Poconos and Catskill Mountain's in the 50's and 60s both for families and singles. Went to a few in my way back when. Definitely brought back memories.

I read the book in the 1980s and must say this is a really beautiful movie adaptation 🥰 Natalie Wood and Gene Kelly were such great actors! I was a bit surprised that they chose Gene Kelly as Noel, in my imagination Noel was much taller than Marjorie.
Since the novel is set in the 1930s, they should have used clothes of that era and should have included politics/WWII (I remember Majorie had nightmares about Gestapo or SS).
The movie doesn't show that the parents are immigrants pursuing their American dream and that the Morgenstern family wasn't always wealthy. If I remember right Marjorie initially had a working class boyfriend back from the days when her father wasn't that successful as a businessman, but now that they have access to higher social circles her mother influences her to date someone from a rich family, like Sandy. I really liked the Mike Eden character from the book, they should have included him. But still a great movie that I definitely will watch again! 😚
As I remember it, the father was taking a big gamble, moving to the Central Park area and hoping that Marjorie would marry the son of a rich family. Little did her parents know that she wanted an acting career instead, which had tragic results for all later on.
I remember she had a fling with Noel and had to go home and tell Sandy she wasn't pure anymore and married him.
I too read the book in my late teens. No one could be sexier to me than Kelly. I walked out of the theater with a broken heart. Could never envision her with Martin Millner. Always dreamed of Kelly singing to me as he did to Debbie Reynolds in "Singing in the Rain."

Just watch from I.44.00 onwards. It's so painful to watch Airman fall, especially when he retreats to teaching at the camp again and Marjorie realises that's where he is best left... to live his life. I can't watch it anymore. So sad.
Herman Wouk was one of my favorite authors in the 60s....my teen years and he taught me a lot about character and integrity. Loved his books and movies all!
