(Easy to find & Cheap) Colored Pencil Pics for Kids // Art Under Quarantine

  • What a weird couple of weeks right? Most schools are closed and that means the kids are home, doing schoolwork at home and maybe being bored without their friends. I decided to compare some very easy to find kids colored pencils to see what was best and also offer some tips for creating with kids during these unusual times.
These colored pencils can be found at the essential stores you will be going to while buying essential supplies during the coronavirus quarantine.
Regular Crayola pencils can be found in the stationary aisle of any supermarket or drugstore but they will be cheaper at places like Walmart or Target.
Crayola expressions, Prismacolor Prang and Rose Art can usually be found at Walmart, Target, Staples (Work at home parents may find themselves there)or even Sams Club.
If you are not leaving the house for necessities you can also find these brands on Amazon: amzn.to/2xfEMIO but they are sometimes more expensive.
Free coloring sheets can be printed from your home computer and printer, just search the image you want with the words "free coloring page"
Also, the blank inside of brown paper shopping bags make wonderful art surfaces.

Great video! Thank you. I'm old, so my kids have kids. I was a teacher for 30 years and I believe it's important to engage kids in all kinds of creative arts. This is great review of colored pencils and I will share it with other parents.

This was so nice of you to think of others like this. I have a 12 count Crayola pencils I got a long time ago. But wow, I love that tin that the Crayola expressions pencils are in. None of the colored pencils I have came in a tin, not even the prismacolor pencils I have. You make such a great teacher. Thank you so very much for all that you do. Take care and God bless you and your family.

Thanks Lindsay. Yup, we are home schooling until after Easter where I am. Lessons are on line. No way to submit art work yet. But my grandson is reading about the Amazon river and vocab, on ot too. I have an old coffee table book 25x11 inches closed, with mostly just huge photos in ot. He is drawing reptiles and amphibians from it. Just to get over the shock of having to hand write notes on his lessons that he normally would get handouts for. Crayola to the rescue! 🤩👏💜💜

Having lived in places where reusable shopping bags are heavily encouraged (WA state and CA), and being very ecological-minded, reusable bags are all I use. Last night I went in to Walmart for a few supplies. I put my items on the belt, bags first. The cashier started ringing me up, and made a comment I never ever thought of. She said, “Thank you for. bringing clean bags!! It makes such a difference!” Wow. To me it made perfect sense, lol!!!

What a timely video, Lindsay! Just before I got on TH-cam, I was looking at art supplies--specifically colored pencils and crayons--for my 4-year-old granddaughter and, I and putting them in my Amazon basket! Now I know which ones I want to buy. Thank you for your video. I hope you and your family are staying safe. With all your art supplies, your home would be a perfect place to shelter and create!

I tried Crayola watercolors pencils just because I didn't know if I would like/use them much. To my surprise, I do like them and think for someone who isn't a pro at it, they work great. I don't have enough interest in water coloring enough to buy the more expensive pencils so this worked perfect for me. Thanks for always sharing the frugal products along with the more expensive ones.

I would recommend Staedtlers Norris Club colored pencils to my fellow Europeans, I think they have sets of 12, 24 and 36 (last is hard to find, but exists). They are the nicest kids pencils Ive found, leads wont break easily, not scratchy and hard like others can be, lays down smoothly. Polychromos is my true love, but I still use my Norries in tandem with them. _They just feel right._ Prices are not even close to what Lindsay showed us, but cheap for European prices (I think my set of 24 was about 12€). Ive seen them in small grocery stores, but best bet might be larger supermarket, if you dont have them already (some schools handed them out in art classes). Kiddie Koh-i-noors are nice too. Have fun and be safe, yall!

I've got the Maped pencils, they're very slightly water soluble and have super bright colours, awesome colour selection in the 24 pack. The Hokka pencils are also cool, mostly because they're pretty easy to erase, but they aren't as pigmented

I just love all your videos so much-thank you! It was so funny I took a creative break from the news for the weekend and organized and painted too. What a restorative thing to do! I also love when you mention some of the nice supplies or tools that you have had since your youth. A couple of my grandchildren are very artistic and I think it’s good when we can to get them some next level brands. Also haha I selfishly use that for an excuse when I get myself nice paints etc that . . . someday they will be theirs or I can give them this so I can move up to that. ;o)

My mom once found a set of Prismacolor at a thrift store (years ago) so I've been using those on and off for a while now. Obviously people shouldn't be, and mostly can't, be going to thrift stores right now. But yeah, literally the best find ever.

I know you always are, but this one is especially because there are so many parents that are running into having to homeschool their kids during this situation. A lot of people are not really into arts/crafts and this is such a great video for them with great suggestions about the paper or what coloring book shows the colors better! You videos are always great anyway!!

Here in the UK the stationer's chain W H Smith has their own brand of coloured pencils that are pretty good for the money, easily comparable to Crayolas. They have two levels but buy the cheaper ones, the colours are exactly the same and, I suspect, the quality. Sadly they are closed at the moment because of the lockdown but they are trading online so they could be ordered.

I have prismacolor and crayola! They are pretty good, aren't they? I read about prisma being prone to breakage and did a little research. Before I used them, I laid them all put and slowly and carefully heated them with my heat tool, then allowed them to cool. I haven't had any problems. If they're dropped, this may help then, too.

Jonni Good of Ultimate Paper Mache dot com uploaded a video today with a bunch of links to free art lessons. One of them is for a child's coloring book she made years ago. The theme for the book is endangered animals so the kids will learn a little bit about the critters as well as having fun coloring. It's a free downloadable book that might go well with any of the products you showed today. Thanks for sharing all those products. Stay healthy and safe!

I recently purchased both of them and am kind of at a loss on what to do with them. Plus I have only been able to find 2 ish videos of watercolor mixed media/abstract in your channel.

Interesting! I have some Crayola colored pencils stashed somewhere. Maybe I should get them out. I made a mad trip to Joann's a week or so ago, (before the shut-in started) and got the last set of the retractable colored pencils that you used in a video recently. They were on "red tag" clearance and I got them for 9 bucks. What a bargain! Love them. Still wanting to try the Prisma colored pencils. Maybe I'll treat myself to a set after all this madness is over!! Take care!

I once snaffled some coloured pencils abandoned on a cafe table from a children's meal deal and they were great! All I had to go on was the brand - EMU - and 'made i n Czech Republic'. I have searched high and low for another place to get those blessed pencils but to no avail! 😁

Prismacolor scholar is a great alternative to the premier if you can find them at a good price. Here in Canada amazon has them for just over $30 for the 60 pack I think that they might be even less at Walmart, but I haven't looked in a really long time.
I still love Crayola's, them and Laurentien (Canadian brand that has sadly been discontinued) were the only pencils that I owned till I was in my 30's.

I agree that Crayola makes the best kid's pencil. One you didn't mention that is pretty good is the Cra-z-y art pencils. They sell them at Wal-Mart. They are better than rose art and prang. They are very vivid but don't layer quite as good as Crayola. I do a lot of adult coloring and I enjoy both the crayola and cra-z-y art.

I respectfully disagree about the cra z art pencils.
In my opinion they are closer to the last pencil Lindsey tested.
A while ago I had researched Rose Art vs Cra Z Art. Both companies were started by the same family. I believe Rose art came first and was passed down and one of the family members broke away from Rose Art and started cra z art.
Anyway haven't seen Rose art in our big box stores in decades. Maybe it's a regional thing.

I have an irrational dislike of wood pencils, but oooh those Prismacolors were gorgeous! I actually really liked the standard Crayola bird, too, I think that's my favourite. Yay, cheapies!
On a more serious note: please, PLEASE follow the directives to shelter in place. I cannot beg you enough. I'm not yet done with medical school, but a lot of my friends are and I don't think the general public knows just how scared a lot of medical professionals are. I've got friends updating their wills, because it looks like frontline medical staff has a higher mortality rate than average and people want to make sure their families are taken care of - especially families where both parents work in hospitals. I know doctors from Bologna, from Madrid, I don't have the words to describe the hell medical staff are going through because the sheer volume of patients is crushing the whole system. The choices they have to make at hospitals when this peaks... We'll have a lot of hospital staff with at least some level of PTSD at the end of this.
I know not everyone has the privilege of staying home, but that makes it doubly important that those of us who can do so. Staying home protects you and your family, but also your community, your hospital staff, all the other patients who'll be more at risk the worse this gets. Every car that stays parked by the house is one less that can get in an accident. Every teen and young adult that stays home instead of going out to party is one less alcohol poisoning or party drug overdose in the ER. People will still have heart attacks and aneurysms, they'll need emergency appendectomies and chemotherapy and all the normal things - they don't go away just because we're in a pandemic. They're not preventable. But everything else? Prevent them! Every avoided car accident is another handful of ER or ICU beds kept free for unavoidable emergencies. Every. Single. Bit. Helps.
....ok, I'm done now, this has been my TED talk....
(Actually no, sorry, I lied: check out Common Ground Collective, there's a lot of things you can do in your community - things that'll do a lot of good and give back some feeling of agency and control. Help each other, take care of each other. Do what you can.)

Prismacolor breakage: I don't have them but I keep hearing that people say you microwave a broken lead pencil a bit, the wax melts together again. So it's not broken anymore. Also that you should check the end of the pencil and if the pencil lead is "off center" to return them.

LINDSEY do not say the "C" word LOL!! TH-cam is demonetarizing videos that use the word. Great video getting back to your roots (frugality) and great ideas (faux leather and printing coloring pages) for families with kids at home. Another idea that could be a project is create a "Stay at home" journal for kids so they can put their thoughts down, their new "home school" schedule, pages like "Things I am thankful for" or "Family Tree" "Favorite treats - recipes" just a thought....
