wow seeing Jim Cantore in the studio back in the day. Today he would be on a boat like the Andrea Gail in the middle of the ocean broadcasting back into the studio!
Fun Fact about Jim Cantore: The ONLY OCM thst started his career at the Weather Channel and STILL going! Everyone else thats been on TWC has had to work their way up to get there... There will never be another one like Jim
Now we have another Grace 30 years later (the name hasn't been retired). I sure miss John Hope. He didn't hype hurricanes. He just told you the facts. He knew his stuff.
And what have we learned here kids? If Jim Cantore comes to your beach, you best leave, because hurricanes seem to like Jim Cantore for some ungodly reason...
OMG, John Hope! Wow. Totally forget about him on TWC. Loved TWC in those days. Was in D.C. when this storm hit. Watched many a storm with those two through the years---and tracked Hugo which hit us down in the low country S C like a nuke.
I was 9 yrs old on October 30th 1991 but never remembered this storm maybe it was not prompted in Rhode Island but Hurricane Bob I remember that was two weeks earlier in October 1991
Fun fact the Andrea Gail was built by Eastern shipbuilding in Panama city Florida. That shipyard has also built the 3 new Staten Island ferries and is currently building the new coast guard offshore cutters
I always shudder at the lines "Billy Tyne was steaming straight into the mouth of meteorological hell" in the book that came of this. I simply cannot imagine the scene on board the Andrea Gail during this storm. 80/90ft seas, winds north of 80/90kts...horrifying. I myself have experience of a force 9 on board a ferry bound for Norway and that was bad enough considering she must of weighed a good few thousand tons. But for a swordfish boat, in those hellish conditions.....
...and three days later the famous Halloween Blizzard hits Minneapolis. 28" of snow!! An extremely crippling storm for many states in the upper Mississippi Valley and upper Great Lakes.

In the movie Perfect storm i thought though it was eerie when
Capt. Billy Tyne said "Its not gonna let us out "

As a Massachusetts native, this will always bring tears to my eyes. Every single time..
Really, that seems a bit excessive
