    FULL GYM PROGRAM: bit.ly/fullgym...
    30-DAY GARAGE PROGRAM: bit.ly/3igtiIF
    The fact that 80% of people will experience substantial back pain at some point in their life I thought this video was crucial to make. There are several things covered here first the correct way to set up a neutral spine and brace before you lift. It might seem like common sense for a seasoned lifter but I guarantee you can learn something from this setup.
    Next, we dive into the how and why of breathing during a lift. It's not as simple as the old adage "breath in during the negative, breath out during the positive", it's a lot more nuanced than that. Believe it or not, there are certain scenarios that you'll want to flip that around.
    Finally, I cover how to fix your posture at any point during the day. And I can't reiterate how important this is. If you go through life with horrible posture then nothing you do in the gym will change that.

    I don’t usually comment on videos. But I wanted to let you know that this video has changed my lifting game completely. My backsquat was horrible. I would usually throw weight on the bar, squat, and hope my back didn’t tweak in the process. I’ve hurt my back dozens of times in the gym over the years because of this. But your advice just changed my life. Externally twisting the feet, squeezing my butt, tightening my abs… it’s a whole new squat form that finally works my legs and not my lower back. Thank you so much.

    I've had chronic pain from 2x disc bulges (L4-L5 & L5-S1) and a right sided annular fissure (L5-S1) I got back in May 2022 during a lost brace on a set of 120kg deadlifts... Think I'll ever get pain free? Like, right now I just want to live pain free again, then the weights can come later, if possible. I feel like I've tried everything. I've tried working through it, around it, and not working out at all for 6-8 weeks without any improvements. I've been to a doctor, a physio, a chiro, and have gotten an MRI, which confirms the bulges and fissure. I've done multiple rehab exercises, like core strengthening by doing dead bugs, planks, etc., and have done floor press ups, but both without improvements. I'm NOT GIVING UP, but it's definitely a hard mental battle! Male, 20 years old, 183cm, 63kg.

    100% this. As a 40-something that spent his 20s and 30s either sitting at a desk job or sitting gaming on PC, I had no idea the damage I was doing. I've since slipped my L5/S1 disc twice, which forces you to address your back and, subsequently, how you train. I get the absolute fear of watching people in the gym trying to deadlift 100kg with a spine looking like the marble arch or doing an overhead press with massive hyper-extension of the hips and not pushing their head through their arms. All because they think heavier = better.

    • @jeratparrino
      @jeratparrino ปีที่แล้ว

      How did you recover from your disc injuries?

    • @2010Cess
      @2010Cess ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jeratparrino I didn’t know what had happened for a week. I have a manual lawn mower (one that works by pushing it), and on Sunday, I noticed my back was quite stiff after gardening. By the next day, I was in agony. I’d suffered periodic back spasms generally lasting one or two days. A week later, I made a Chiro appt and was sent for an X-Ray and MRI the same day.
      Turns out that a lifetime of sitting on my ass playing games and working had shrunk my L5 disc, I’d lost 2mm off it, and it herniated pretty severely. I had four months of solid chiro appts, 3 days/week. I had a strict routine of icing my back for 8, then walking in the garden for 5, then lying on the floor for anand hour, then repeating. I must have watched all 7 seasons of SoA on Netflix. I was gradually allowed to work 30%, 50, 70, and 90, then full-time over 5 or 6 weeks. After 3 months, I was sent to a physio specialising in pressure point therapy. He’d work on my spine for 10 mins, then followed by 20 mins of Core and Psoas work (that had me sweating more than I did at CrossFit). All in it was probably 6 months until I was back in the gym. Even then, I was absolutely terrified the first time I did a deadlift.
      The second time I did it by getting out of bed. I knew as soon as I sat up I’d done it again. It wasn’t as severe, and I already had a library of exercises from before, so I started rehab immediately. I also went back to the gym a lot sooner. As I was more confident in my exercise form, I just stuck to really light weights, and I’m sure it helped to speed up my recovery.
      I still do McKenzie exercises as a kind of preventative.

    Ryan! This was golden. As a Sports chiropractor I absolutely agree with all of this. Many don't realize or see that your form means $h*t if the joints are not aligned in the body to begin with especially in the spine. And typically it's bad form in day to day living that leads to injury as apposed to a macrotrauma like a lifting injury or slip and fall. Well said.

    I have had not so great back hygiene my whole adult life. I have had some pretty bad back pain in my life. I have had sciatica before. Well like two weeks ago I was doing romanian deadlift all wrong and too much weight. Fatigued my paraspinal muscles ( pretty sure that's what the muscles next to your spine are called) and felt pop in my back. About a week later, I felt mostly fine till this, I started feeling like sciatica again. The first time it happened I stretched a lot for a week and it went away. I did the same thing this time but it made it worse. Started feeling really funny in my left leg (along with a lot of nerve pain) and somewhat my pelvic saddle and left arm. Went to the ER the had me do a bunch of stuff the check my spine and spinal cord. Everything checked out fine. So to the MRI I went, sure enough posterior protrusion in L4-L5 and L5-S1 and that was pinching some nerves. It's been a week since then I am feeling much better now. The doctor told me to look up videos for back therapy and strengthening. I am doing that and it has helped huge amounts. I can confidently say I'm recovering fine. However, I do find myself overarching my back to "correct my posture" and this video explained it perfectly and now realize I am over correcting. Now I can use this video to keep myself from doing that.

  • @nickpolis1561

    Great video, Ryan! I discuss a lot of these facts with patients on a daily basis. Just to piggy back on some things you said:
    With your cue for hip external rotator activation via locking your feet into the ground, id add to make sure you have the 3 points of contact of your foot on the ground, otherwise you can excessively supinate whioe squatting if you're limited with hip or ankle mobility
    Id substitute the phrase "muscularly unstable" for out of alignment in regards to the spine, otherwise people hear that and run to a chiro. Inability to maintain posture and form is a product of poor agonist/antagonist strength relationships and mobility that compounds with time.
    Lastly, id be cautious with exaggerated curvatures with that last maneuver you showed. If someone has a "broken dog's neck" spondy and pushes into that it could be news bears.
    Love your work!

    The advice on how to brace during heavy lifts is solid. The advice to try to maintain a neutral spine throughout the day is not. Yes, we've got some models showing that the lumbar spine is exposed to higher loads when it's out of neutral alignment, however:
    #1 Not all models from labs around the World agree on this.
    #2 Loading is not inherently bad. After all, we lift weights because it isn't. With loading, it's always a matter of dosage; how heavy, how often etc. Get the dosage right and you'll likely come out stronger. This goes for spinal discs too.
    #3 Back pain is complex and multifactorial. Even if this stuff matters, to the average person with low back pain, putting an emphasis on how to pick up light objects is a bit like mowing your lawn while your house is on fire.
    I like your videos, Ryan! I know you're not afraid to prove yourself wrong. I used to believe what you share in this video too, some years ago. Do try to not chase your confirmation bias too much regarding this particular topic.

    Starting Strength’s Mark Rippetoe and succeeding coaches has touch on this subject. With the amount of subscribers you have and I’m one too; it is enriching for myself and others to benefit from you. Thank you

    “You pet’s head starts falling off”. 😂😂. Wonder how many people got the Scottie dog reference where a pars interarticularis fracture on a lumbar oblique X-ray looks like a Scottie dog with a collar or “your pets head falling off.” 👍😂👍

    Another great educational and entertaining video! Your videos are so funny, I have to rewatch them!
    On another note: any news on the app (or did I miss something somewhere while snorting coffee through my nose?)

    Honestly one of the most important things about lifting. This should be the first lesson to young lifters.

    I practically unalived myself doing lat pulldown last May. Still recovering and can’t lift heavy, but if I’d seen this vid would have definitely saved me from the three weeks of walking bent over literally bowing to everyone.

    When my back blew itself I didn't even get one of those cool rides. But after correcting a lot of this stuff proper back health is like the most paramount thing for me. Glutes and lumbar are a big focus for me because of needing to work them back up

    Wish woulda known this when I was a kid. Rolled over in the middle of the night last July and broke my own back between L3-4. Over inch and a half of movement. Doc said injury sometime in my past. Had been wearing out for years. Now have titanium rods and screws, and a plastic wedge for a disk. Don't wait or mess around if you have back issues. Find the best Doc you can. Get it fixed right. HUGE shout out to Dr. Thomas Manning in Boise, Idaho. Without him i would be in that 12%!
