    I love his knowing smile before playing 'Thirteen' after he asks if the audience want to hear a happy song or a sad song and a guy says "What's the difference?" and someone else yells "You can't have one without the other!" Elliott just says "Exactly" with a nod and the wry smile then plays it beautifully solo. What a great guy :)

      I never understood why you cant have one without the other. Couldnt you theoretically only experience happiness your whole life? I mean you most likely wont but theoretically couldnt you? Therefore you can have one without the other. Or do you mean by it just dont ignore the bad and its okay to talk about bad, write songs about the bad, and everyone has experienced good and bad. Philosophically why can you not have one without the other? You most likely wont experience only good in this life. I would wager everyone who ever lived has experienced good and bad.

      How do you know what happiness feels like without first experiencing what pain is?

      @@jala1081 This can be a philosophical talking point, but is also a literal, objective truth based in physics and biology. Without contrast, there is nothing to compare. It's like, if everything was green, you wouldn't know what colour was. Theoretically you actually _can't_ just be happy, not as a human at least. Happiness, like everything, requires energy, input and physical work to achieve, which all has "negative" consequences.
      Your brain chemistry has to be primed to be happy. Dopamine dips and rises, and depletes and regenerates. Every human will have moments caught in between the peaks, just because of the physical laws of our universe., aka nature. Even if they have everything they could want. People say happiness is just a state of mind, but not really. It depends on dopamine/serotonin/other hormones. There is always a give and take, from microscopic chemical reactions in our brain, to our entire universe forming and ultimately dying. You answer your own question with the last sentence, you would win that wager.

    I remember going to this show, driving up from Melbourne. I was lucky enough to meet Elliott Smith before he played. Great memories.

    His magnificence has been saving my life. It always has, but this past year I’ve been listening to him every day - I can’t go a day without him. He was such a beautiful man, with such a soothing, intimate voice, a voice like a secret.

    I was at this show! Quasi were great and then were Elliott’s band. Great night! My mate filmed the show too. Maybe 10ft back from this on the same side.

      Energizer started using a bunny as a joke in the nineties, sort of a satirical rip off, and it just stuck, and today not many realize it was Duracell first.

    I much prefer Elliott solo and acoustic. The band is totally superfluous. They really distract me from the essence of the man and his music. Strip it down all the way :) not one song is improved by having the rhythm section or indeed the guitar electric.

    • @drago6769
      @drago6769 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +John Arundell elliott electric is soooooo good just watch him at Bumbershoot. The sound in this particular vid is just bad

    • @johnarundell7951
      @johnarundell7951 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      D Rago Why would you assume I haven't seen Bumbershoot? Yes it's great and he's great in rocked up festival mode as well but it's not just a sound issue here either. As I said the other players distract me from him and dilute his impact somewhat. I've said it before and I'll say it again .. I much prefer Elliott solo and acoustic. End of story :)

    • @patrickmersault4298

      +John Arundell This is two years late but bruh he put an electric guitar and a rhythm section in the studio versions of literally 12 out of the 16 songs in this show. 13 if you count the tambourine in Clementine.
      Also that better be the last time D Rago assumed that somebody hasn't seen Bumbershoot. Where do you get off, D Rago? You're just going to go around recklessly commenting like people haven't already seen Bumbershoot? HE FUCKING SAW BUMBERSHOOT.

    • @edwardbenkhin5471
      @edwardbenkhin5471 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah I guess it's just a crying shame Elliott wasn't a human/ octopus hybrid that could play all of the different instruments that he recorded in the studio simultaneously by himself in his live performances
