    Man what an awesome vid! The stoke was real on that last doggie!

    • @nfislander
      @nfislander  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks brother🙌 yes! That last doggie was the culmination of many weeks and countless drops where I let big dogtooth go without taking a shot because I was waiting for the perfect presentation! It was a primal cry that happened on it’s own, makes me laugh to look back on it! Also floods back the stoke of the moment🤙

      Haha, That was the culmination of so much energy stored up over three weeks of letting opportunities go on big dogs because the presentation wasn’t perfect and or I didn’t have the right set up at the time, then it all came together at that moment! The stoke was real 🤣

    Holy crap! That’s nuts, the irony of stumbling across this video, when I’m 8 weeks From flying to Fiji to try and shoot my first doggy, is just way to coincidental.
    It really has outlined just how unprepared an inexperienced I am when it comes to this fish,
    We really have our hands full
    I’m guessing it’s happened for a reason though, so I can prepare a shitload better than previously planned, we’re going to need it.

      Thanks bro 🙌 yes they are definitely a unique and challenging fish! I’d definitely recommend setting up your shafts with cable and putting the majority of your focus on the free-diving and your body language! Interact with them before you think about letting a shaft go, that is unless of course you have a good fish come up real close and you feel your shot will be 100% effective… enjoy your trip and good luck 🤙 dive safe

    Awesome video, could you please give a tip on how to attract them to come closer?

    • @nfislander
      @nfislander  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Every fish is unique as to what it will and will not respond too… as a rule though as with most fish minimal or no direct eye contact is important when trying to get them in close! Body language is everything! And so you must be aware of what story your telling with your movements and actions! You can drop in deep blue water to their approximate area as long as your moving parallel to them or away slightly, you can drop a throw flasher and keep all your focus on that as you dive, by doing this your mimicking something that is hunting that potential food source. You can shoot a rainbow runner or other type of fish that dogtooth hunt trying not to fatally wound the fish so that you can let it down to a depth that your comfortable diving/hunting at. You can do the same thing with a flasher/teaser that is strung to your desired depth you would like to hunt at. Or you can totally ignore the dogtooth and just make dives amongst the other smaller fish schools quietly sinking through them so that they surround you also not perceiving you as a threat, doing so in a horizontal position with your gun tucked beside you to make your self look smaller and less threatening… as I said though all these techniques work, but every fish is unique depending on many factors like tide, water temperature, moon phase and so on, these factors determine the fishes behaviours to a large degree, if your there when the fish are actively hunting they will be interested in many things, if they are taking a break they will be hard to get close to most of the time… best thing you can do is get out there, watch the fish and see what they like and don’t like when your diving, pay attention to the time of day and the tide directions and water temps and you’ll start really getting a feel for hunting them. This is true of every fish you target, learning through observation is key 🤙

    How important is big Bluewater speargun in your opinion? I have 105 (from muzzle to last shark fin on shaft) inverted roller wooden speargun. It uses 3 pairs of 16 mm rubber connected with pulley system. It shoots 7.5 mm shaft with slip tip. What doggie size do you think I can get with it reliably?

    • @nfislander
      @nfislander  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s not important to have a “big blue water speargun” smaller inverted roller guns can be effective, however what ever size the gun is it has to be able to throw a 8-9mm shaft accurately to a distance that is beyond the distance you want the fish to be at when you take the shot… the reason that I am saying that the shaft needs to be a minimum of 8mm is because a thinner shaft is lighter and will have a lesser ability to penetrate a thick fish with big strong bones! The extra weight of the thicker shafts creates a harder impact and increases the potential to consistently penetrate all the way through a solid fish regardless of which part of the fish you hit exactly, this increases your chances of holding the fish without the double flooper or slip tip becoming dislodged/ripping during a hard powerful fight!
      It is of course possible to land a solid fish with a 7.5mm shaft from a single roller gun if it’s fully powered up, your very close and your shot is absolutely perfect, but it’s not ethical to do so often because the odds will not be in your favour and you will loose, injure and most likely kill a greater number of fish that otherwise would be free to continue growing, breeding and maintaining fish stocks in the areas you hunt as well as spreading spawn that will add to the numbers of these fish in many other locations.
      With the set up your talking about I would definitely upgrade to an 8mm shaft, over powering a 7.5mm shaft will cause shaft whip and make your shots unreliable/inaccurate… and if your inverted gun is shooting a 7.5mm shaft with out whip then it’s most likely underpowered for targeting dogtooth over 25kg. If you can set it up with an 8-8.5mm shaft and adjust your rates of tension/power so that it’s reliably and accurately throwing the shaft past your desired distance that you aim to hunt/shoot at then you have a good chance of being able to make an accurate shot that will penetrate a solid fish fully and give you a good chance of landing a good fish, however there is a lot more to landing a big dogtooth than just the gun/setup your using… you have to be disciplined with the shots you choose to make and also aware of the environment your hunting in and the number of sharks and their behaviour at the time when you are choosing for or against pulling the trigger.
      I know this is long winded and doesn’t answer your question as to a size fish your setup could take down, but the answer is in there if you understand the variables and points that I’m making ✌️

    That video was excellent!! my buddy just recommended it to me! I’m looking at an Aimrite now what size double roller do you have? Any thoughts on them? I have a Riffe 3 atm float and another 15 lbs Sporasub float for a kicker would that work? Thanks I just subscribed

    • @nfislander
      @nfislander  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the kind words🙌 I run a 135cm double roller, The new “Vendetta” barrels are the best balanced barrels that Aimrite has ever produced, they are powerful and accurate and in complicated which makes them reliable and able to be rerigged on the boat if need be, as opposed to an inverted type setup where you would realistically have to go back home to fix a rigging issue.
      If you are ordering from Aimrite internationals website you can use my name as a code for a discount: jamieryves
      Your floats will be fine, try keep your float line set up simple and strong, also make it adjustable in length so you can set it to the depth you are planning on hitting each dive through the day, so that the floats are already doing the work of keeping the fish off the bottom while you ascend.
      Good luck Brother🤙

      @jimbreen7009 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the info! yes happy to hear the Aimrite gets the job done! I was thinking the same thing about the inverted rollers awesome but complex… hoping the 145 will have enough range for my tuna hunts. How far can the 135 shoot?

    • @nfislander
      @nfislander  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jimbreen7009 I’m sure the 145 will “smesh” tuna! All the double roller footage you see in this clip and all the other clips as well as all blue water content on my Instagram @deeplyimmersed are the 135 double roller… in my experience anything that is putting an 8.5mm shaft through a solid dogtooth’s head, will also go through a good size tuna in the “mid body holding shot” section!
