That voice thing in “Real N*ga” is a wu tang sample! The member Ol Dirty Bastard, on one of his solo songs, started the song with that, but Jpegmafia looped it at the almost-scream part, and made a song around it, while ODB just did it acapella randomly, then moved on.
The chorus of Rainbow Six is great and always makes me want to turn the volume all the way up. The Travis Scott part is a sample.

@@bobthepoppop it was genius to even think of sampling it in Real N*ga! By the way, Wu Tang are almost certainly a group youd love to do the albums in order after hearing their debut 36 chambers. When it comes to their discography, it includes both group albums and solo albums by the 9 members, and the first 7 albums all are considered classic after classic, a really incredible line of albums. Those albums were
Wu Tang - Enter the 36 Chambers
      Method Man - Tical

Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx

    • @differentbutsimilar7893
      @differentbutsimilar7893 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

Dude, his sound is always "coming a long way". The evolution of this guy from album to album is really something. I don't know if non-artists really appreciate how awesome it is when someone is able to channel that and portray it through the gestalt of the art... just the way that it exists lets you know there is a growing, changing soul perpetuating it. I feel like I've taken the journey with him and it gives me a feeling that very few artists today do. And that is the desire to create something NEW... something ME. Take the time to make it different, put in all of those details I think people will think are weird. Concentrate your pathos and your ethos, let it drive what you make and what you choose to put out. Own it, and be good as hell at it. So good nobody can really question it anymore. Nobody ever seems to come at him for the quality of his art, even when they're basically dismantling him as an artist. More often they go for his takes. I find that pretty interesting.
This is what he has always done as an artist. Jpegmafia gets the ultimate respect in this game for being a real artist before literally everything else in his music. And you absolutely hear that in every new release he has ever put out. There's always something new and different on there. It sounds chaotic at times but I have little doubt that it's not obsessively refined.

You should listen to Injury Reserve's By the Time I Get to Phoenix. It's some of the most unique, groundbreaking hip-hop albums I've ever heard. It's really pushing the boundaries of hip-hop. They were a rap trio composed of 2 emcees, Ritchie with a T; Stepa J. Groggs, and 1 producer, Parker Corey until June 2020 when Groggs unexpectedly passed away. Despite this album being mostly completed before he passed, and most lyrical content based on the death of Ritchie with a T's stepfather, it's still a haunting listen. It's a beautiful album full of aggression, pain, but hope.

Btw, Peggy is pretty well versed in metal/rock too. He references metal bands as influences often and came up in the hardcore scene in Baltimore. That’s why in I cannot fucking wait till morrissey dies, the opening line is specifically referring to Tom Araya from Slayer (who has expressed some pro trump sentiment), Varg Vikernes from Mayhem (who is a far right white supremacist and is quite open about it) and then, obviously, Morrissey, who was a very adamant supporter of Brexit and made a ton of alt-right sympathizing statements during the mid 2010’s. The song is political in nature.

I'm really happy you finally reacted to this been waiting since early july for this. What I find quite interesting about Veteran is its f*ck it attitude throughout, the lack of consistency in lyrics and sounds, randomness being the only consistent theme the album goes by, and Peggy himself said that this album represents a exagerated version oh himself and metaphorically how lurking through the internet sounds like, almost serving like musical shitposting (in a pretty genius and unique way), so that kinda sums it out, however another very important part is how diverse and adventurous Peggy's music can get, and maybe cause of the sound of this album and previous ones it gives the impression of being a Death Grips type artist cause all similar aggressiveness, but going back and forward between his discography you realize certain things, sort of what Tyler The Creator sounded like at first and how different he sounds now, with the exception that Peggy's sound has changed, evolved and get mixed together so much since his very first mixtapes when he went by Devon Hendryx more than 10 years ago. And that part is what relates pretty heavily to me and many others, the passion and the commitment to his art, from where nobody give a crap about him to just now where he's finally getting all the credit and merit he deserved for a long ass time just by keeping it real to himself. Thanks so much for the video again, and I hope in the future you do your reaction to what I think are his best work yet, All My Heroes Are Cornballs and The Ghost Pop Tape :)

It’s great to see you pick up on the parallels between Peggy and Frank Ocean, Death Grips, and Aphex Twin. It’s also hilarious to see you go into the Genius annotations only to go “fuck that I don’t agree”. Welcome to being a modern rap fan LOL.
Real Nega samples the vocals of the legendary Ol Dirty Bastard. He was a member of Wu Tang Clan and is a pioneer of alternative hip hop and a huge influence on experimental sounds in rap, especially for Danny Brown who I’m also super hyped for you to check out.
This album contains a lot of themes of anxiety and PTSD which can relate to both his experience in the military and his experience dealing with growing up on the internet. Many of the instrumentals are warped digital messes sampling obscure TH-cam clips and containing references to memes caught mainly by the terminally online. You can really feel that despair on tracks like Rainbow Six and Panic Emoji.
I thought Peggy perfectly captured the relationship between braggadocio in rap while covering up the pain underneath, as well as trolling the alt right while still feeling hurt by all the racism and hate they put forth. These are brazen attitudes cut in hostility.
But you can tell especially in his interviews (check out his latest one with Nardwuar) that he’s a thoughtful, sensitive dude. I don’t think his aggression is necessarily a front, but I do think it’s a product of his environment. It’s sadly relatable as a response to ennui of the social media age.
ALSO I should add the “you think you know me” sample throughout the album is from pro wrestler Edge’s theme music, which was produced by Jim Johnston. I’m not sure if that’s the true origin of the sample, but that’s definitely where it was popularized. JPEGMAFIA’s music contains many references to wrestling, and he’s actually gotten involved with a new company All Elite Wrestling, appearing in some vignettes with Darby Allin. The hip-hop/wrestling connection is absolutely booming right now with Peggy, Griselda Records, and Wale (just to name a few) rapping about it all the time.

Bob, if you're still looking for good headphones for big ears, the Phillips SHP 9500's are worth looking into. Huge ear cups, built like a tank, and the most comfortable pair I've owned, and nice clear soundstage. One catch is if you don't like open backs, but definitely worth looking at.

He also went under the name devon hyndrx and he made more ambient albums such as dreamcast summer songs, and The ghost pop tape. His other album Communist slow jams is also amazing

You listening to peggy is unexpected, but it makes me excited that your reacting to sort of newer albums, you definitely have to listen to TA13OO by Denzel Curry, it came out the same year as this album and peggy even features in one of the tracks

This album is so chaotic but so good. Easily a classic for the experimental scene

I tend to think I have larger ears myself and have found that I really enjoy the Boss Quiet comfort headphones. They are pretty pricy but I love them.

AND please if you're gonna listen in the future to his "LP!" Album listen to the OFFLINE VERSION (it's only on TH-cam and Bandcamp) and it's the real version of the album (and it has more songs too)

So far, everyone has said to listen to the offline version, so that's basically a guarantee at this point 👍

I've briefly met Peggy twice - once after a show in Columbus Ohio and once after a show at The Agora Cleveland in 2023. He was genuinely the most humble, kind and joyful artist I have ever met. I asked him to sign my black Playstation 2 memory card and he had a hearty laugh from it.
