    That's true! Xianxia novels indeed provide a lot of information about culture! In fact, my personal research into chinese mythology started with xianxia 🤣🙈 I love the way authors include cultural elements, such as myths/legends, traditions or holidays, into plots of their stories, and so we can understand more their importance and meaning in culture.
    Thank you for the video! All the points are exactly my thoughts on xianxia 🙈

    Stories of world-shaking demigod type characters have always been my favorite, and xianxia is the latest manifestation of that. It's great.
    It's funny how xianxia is very popular among western readers while also being very common to turn up your nose at it.
    I think there's just a required suspension of disbelief that some people are willing to commit to and others not.

    @Deathblade, another reason why Xianxia is better is because the ‘night makes right’ philosophy breaks the boundaries of caste and politics. For example at the beginning of ISSTH Meng Hao wanted to take an exam to become an official in the mortal world. He was devastate to have failed and felt like his life was over. When he became a cultivator, had Meng Hao wished to, he could have made the mortal emperor kneel and treat him as an ancestor. The stronger you become in Xianxia thee less politics matter. Toward the end of the novel when Meng Hao had left the 9 heavens and took over someone else’s body, I forget the names, everyone feared him so much even the other elders, who were supposedly equal, dared not offend him. So Xianxia basically takes the concept of an underdog becoming lord of heaven to extreme. All things are possible

    • @lenasthy4146
      @lenasthy4146 5 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      I'd actually say that is a disavantage to Xianxia novels. In Wuxia novels, because of that same existence of political powers and others, the MC will have to find a way to overcome them, however, i can assure you that it will include a big plot and not just the simple aid of power.
      Don't get me wrong, i love Xianxia. However, i tend to give much more value to a history that is able to portrays things realistically, even if that contradicts the concept of Xianxia.

      Acc ura I actually tend to dislike the political maneuvering because of the hypocrisy. Some official wants to cover for his son murdering people and raping women so the official wipes out a village with his private soldiers and says it’s a ‘bandit attack’ they always seem to raise their kids as co pretend little a$$holes. I like Xianxia better because instead of having to wait to gather evidence and worry about other politicians covering things up because of mutual interest you can just kill them

    Great video DB, I think you hit most, if not all of the points on what makes certain aspects of Xianxia as a genre. Personally, my favorite part of Xianxia is the easy to digest mechanics of it as opposed to ambiguous levels of Wuxia power levels. It makes the plot much easier to follow and establishes a better hierarchy in my opinion. It was way easier for me to get into when first starting out. Also, if you happen to read this comment, what is your favorite type of main character in a Xianxia novel?

    I prefer xianxia over wuxia myself and agree with what you said but I also find it quite easy to get saturated with all the stuff it can throw at you and need take a break every now and again. Lower power levels (relative to your average xianxia) even later in the story are refreshing but very rare, I can only recall a few novels where the protagonist didn't end up being able to casually pluck the peaks off a mountain.
    I think what I want most at the moment is a novel with a steady power growth from mortal, to someone who can break rocks, all the way to immortal hermits who can fly and destroy mountains, with a few alchemist and formation masters who can produce pills that can rally kingdoms to teleportation.

    My main reason for why I prefer xianxia novels over wuxia ones may be unconventional : I just like the many-lifetimes-spanning love stories that many xianxia novels have. It's quite romantic in an epic way and I love it.

  • @superlukey3
    @superlukey3 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    (Sorry if I posted something very similar to this on the last video, I don't THINK I did)
    I don't think wuxia is inherently better than xianxia or the other way around. I do think, however, that there is a major issue in *how xianxia is written and published*. The sort of chapter-per-day, no editing, continue until you run out of ideas mentality, is not conducive to good storytelling. While some xianxia is very good it's in spite of this format, not because of it. If more xianxia novels were written in a more traditional style (which does not mean they can't be published online!), I think the genre would improve in quality tremendously.

    I don't want to compare wuxia and xianxia genres but from what I get from your commentary, what I find profound with xianxia is the integration of philosophical thoughts in the story. This is rarely seen on Western films with fantasy action genre such as the Marvel movies. I am even surprised when principles and even mystical techniques are incorporated in certain xianxia novels I have been reading, things I learned in schools of esoteric philosophy in arcane subjects both Eastern and Western including alchemy. Although I also have to comment that there are things incorporated that are confusing and misleading in xianxia novels, scenes that I can't even visualize, so far this genre is very compelling. They can be both informative and entertaining though one has to get into esoteric path of knowledge taking to filter which subjects in xianxia novels are based on facts and which are not.

      I know it is late, but what you say is lost in western stories, used to exist, before everything became hollywood'efied.

    • @vegamoonlight
      @vegamoonlight 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@gampie13 Tolkien's works seem to portray Gnosticism. There are races of mortals, demons, elves and dwarves. It's mostly about battles of good and evil in groups.
      Whereas, in xianxia, the battle between good and evil is within. And when one gets to decide what path he or she would like to take, then the success of their cultivation practices can be gauged when they could ascend to higher realms. Ascension in realms has never been integrated in Western famtasy media so far, as I recall.
      In xianxia, human mortals and even plants and animals can gain immortality when they start cultivation practices. Though fantastical, I find the possibility especially in my case when I learn mystical techniques that can make me immortal. And those are secret techniques that only high-level students of mystical schools(headed by enlightened gurus) can learn as a privilege.

    Deathblade I wanted to ask you if you could make a video about Worlds/Jie , I think Jie is the word for planets/world but sometimes they also use it for planes. The whole thing is very confusing because sometimes you have the MC talking about the world being inside a certain planet, but in my head I think "a planet is a world like wtf?". I remember in a novel I read the "Jies" were connected by rivers and I thought that didnt make any sense because how could a planet be connected to another planet by a river? The novels I am referencing are World of Cultivation and Martial World, but this whole Jie thing is very common in many novels. I hope maybe you could go in depth and explain how planes/worlds/planets work in chinese culture.

    • @ndril
      @ndril 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      jiè 界 is used in Buddhist writings going back to pre-scientific times, often translated "realm." For example humans and animals live in 欲界 Yùjiè "The realm of worldly desires" while devas live in 色界 Sèjiè "The realm of forms." Depending on the author you may be able to travel between 'jie' in a physical fashion, but in myth/religion it's more like unconnected dimensions only accessible by spiritual methods.

    • @Deathblade
      @Deathblade  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good idea. Honestly there is no perfect answer to the question. The authors can use the terms however they want. I've seen the author use different words for the same thing, and vice versa. World/plane/dimension etc. can all be described with different/same words.

    Deathblade, is xianxia vs wuxia only a very recent distinction? Are there early Xianxia films? My buddies and jokingly call a subset of very high fantasy wuxia "Laser Wuxia" like Buddha's Palm and Bastard Swordsman. Were these actually early Xianxia? Condor Heroes includes lots of characters with very fantastical elements like the 5 Greats with their own weird fantasy techniques - is this Wuxia or Xianxia? Gu Long adaptations seem to push this fantasy tendency into overdrive without the pyrotechnics, but lots of characters with terrifying fantasy techniques or super strength. Still wuxia, or is it Xianxia? Thanks, Deathblade!

      Mo Da Zu Shi is an extremely popular animated xianxia show. For movies, check out Zu Warriors. It's dated, has bad CGI, and a weird story, but it's purely xianxia. Storm Riders kind of hovers between xianxia and wuxia, but is also a good one.

    Part of my honestly doesn't believe novels of a certain genre are better than the other, it all comes down to how well the plot and characters are written. If were to choose between a weird western with an elaborate setting but bland writing, and a straight western that's grounded in reality with strong writing, i'd choose the latter. Still, I'd prefer to make a weird western over a pure horse opera.

It has characters who have lived and "lived" for a very long time and characters who have reincarnated a great number of times. It plays with Difu and Difu's judge and the Yan Kings/Kings of the Ten Courts/Halls. It has many yao characters. It deals with soul-fires and gods and destiny. Revised edition
    What is truth? At present, the most logical and convincing is evolutionist materialism! But it's wrong! Here are a few questions to illustrate! First of all, a few questions!
    1. Hawking said that physics proves that there is no place for God! Let's see if Hawking is right through the following questions!
    Matter has four forces. Under the action of the four forces of physics, why does all matter in the universe exist in the form of galaxies and revolve around a center? According to the characteristics of the four forces reasoning, large-scale automatic formation of this form of existence is simply incredible!? And completely illogical! Specifically deduce the following four forces, in which the strong force and the weak force can interact in a very short distance, the range of the strong force is less than 15 meters, and the weak force is shorter! The long-distance effect is only the electromagnetic force, the force of magnet and the universal gravitation. Every star is subject to the universal gravitation and electromagnetic force of other stars. How do stars keep their orbits? There's no way to explain! In the system of single star and planet, it can keep elliptical orbit spontaneously! But if there are other stars, there's no explanation! In addition, there are other things that do not conform to the mathematical calculation in the current observation. The current explanation is the dark matter dark energy hypothesis! But there is no experimental evidence to prove this hypothesis! Newton Einstein believed in God at the end of his life! In Theravada Buddhism, it is said that these people are in charge. In addition, the climate is also managed by man and nature. You can use the current artificial intelligence statistical reasoning to have a look!
    It seems that the observer effect in quantum theory experiment is not in line with the spirit and cannot change the matter! In terms of materialism, if matter produces spirit, what is the relationship between spiritual activities and material activities? Does mental activity not affect material activity at all, or is mental activity a specific form of material activity or something? From the perspective of materialism, the relationship between material and consciousness should be fixed, and a certain material mode can produce consciousness. The consciousness of single celled Paramecium and multicellular human may be the same, and they all have a self-consciousness! If we all have a self-consciousness, then one cell is enough. Is there a cell at the core of human consciousness with so many cells? If so, then the material structure of consciousness in a cell is enough, and may even exist in the quantum of superposition state! It's possible to exist outside the physical world by coupling with only one cell! Continue to explore the characteristics of consciousness: we think about our spiritual consciousness, is it always in understanding and feeling? Know what's going on! And to see if the purpose of their own survival is to pursue these desires with their own preferences? It's incredible! There is another one, and I heard foreign experts report in Huilongguan psychiatric hospital that general depression comes down suddenly, which is also a good one. This is in line with the characteristics of Zhongxie being attached! There are also dark matter and dark energy in physics. Is it possible to have dark life? And can ghosts and gods belong to the dark matter world?
    In addition, according to the theory of evolution, mutations are random, so according to the probability, abnormal mutations in various species should be a considerable proportion, but the reality is very few!
    2. The characteristics of life are more incredible! Why do all living things eat and die? And in terms of reproduction, why are there no weird patterns and almost all of them are bisexual? Is it determined by the nature of the earth's environment or matter itself, or what is the reason? At present, the mechanism of cell aging and death is that every cell division consumes something called telomere. Telomere is limited! But the germ cells have telomerase to repair telomeres! So that no matter how old children are born with a complete telomere! There is no ordinary cells have telomerase biological intriguing!
    Biology is opposite to the second law of thermodynamics, it is negative entropy! Moreover, the survival purpose of life is to obtain food to maintain its negative entropy form and reproduction contrary to the second law of thermodynamics! It's incredible
    I mentioned sex! For human beings, why are there only men and women in general? Why do men love women and women love men? What's the difference between men and women? Theravada Buddhism says that women lack wisdom, which is supported by the law of facial appearance! On the face, the position of eyebrows near the center of eyebrows represents sensibility, and the position of eyebrows far away represents rationality. Women lack rationality. Generally, the place near the center of eyebrows is wide, while men are wider outside! Go and see if it's like this! Is there no reason why people's character, talent, beauty and ugliness are random?! Is ancient physiognomy true? Is there a corresponding relationship between face and character? Is it true that "phase comes from heart"?

    • @user-hi8sq5gi8z
      @user-hi8sq5gi8z 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      3. My own body evidence is consistent with Theravada Buddhism! Truth should be Theravada Buddhism! Mahayana's theory of worry and nirvana has no connotation except that it insists that believers should not be separated! And Mahayana Buddhism doesn't teach any way to settle down! And the Pure Land Sect of Mahayana Buddhism is even more ridiculous. If you recite the name of Amitabha, you will be led to the Western Paradise by Amitabha after death, and then you will be liberated! If it's so simple, why doesn't Amitabha perform miracles every day? Then everyone will follow him to practice, and all problems will be solved! Believing in the creator's religion, there is a problem. Is it meaningful for the creator to create all living beings and then let us live such a hard life and die painfully?
      The evolutionary fossil chain should be tampered with by the demons. Whenever there is a Buddha, almost all the heavenly kings in the zenith of the desire world want to stop the spread of Buddhism because they are afraid of the reduction of their control objects! Because the world of existence is divided into three realms: the realm of desire, including most animals and human beings in hell, and the realm of desire. The realm of desire has the largest number of living beings, so the heavenly king of the heaven at the top of the realm of desire will have great greed and will not want Buddhism to be his ruling object, and will be reduced by liberation! There are also the chromatic and achromatic realms, which must be the karma of meditation in order to be born there), so they want to hinder the Dharma!
      A living world (the earth is one of the living worlds) has a cycle of living in bad space. When the earth is dying, all living beings in this world will be reminded to obtain meditation and go to heaven. After the earth is formed, it will become human due to the consumption of meditation karma, and the first human will jump out directly
      To the so-called metaplasia, can fly, the body will shine!
      The real fossil chain should be that there are human fossils in any stratum. At the beginning, there should be only human! There is a law in the world that all sentient beings will rise to a peak in morality for a period of time, and then decline until the average life expectancy rises again when they are 10 years old. At present, the average life expectancy is about 75 years old! Human beings can only see humanity and a part of animal and Tao beings! There are a lot of archaeological discoveries in line with this theory, such as footprints on trilobites (the discoverers said it was a coincidence at that time, but many footprints were found in the whole trilobite ruins), uranium mining, hammers, iron balls and many other similar discoveries in human strata hundreds of millions of years ago, there is a professional term called opaz antiquities It just doesn't conform to the discovery of general evolutionism! There is also a dinosaur footprints and human footprints appear at the same time. The size of those human footprints seems to be 3 or 40 cm, which is in line with the average moral level. The higher the human body is, the bigger the human body is. Why can't we see the gods and ghosts? Maybe it's because the 24 hours of the lowest heaven is 50 years of the time of the human world, and heaven and man regard the human world as a cesspool, and don't want to be seen! One is averse to the fear of ghosts, so it can also be caused by karma that does not wish to see ghosts! However, this will not solve the problem of making everyone believe in the karma of reincarnation!!! There is a book called Forbidden archaeology, which specifically lists a lot of archaeological evidence in line with the Vedic theory (the author believes in the world theory of Indian Vedas, which is similar to the world theory of Theravada Buddhism!) But he can't explain why there are so few human remains! The real fossil chain should be that there are human fossils in any stratum!
      In addition, many people in various countries have memories of their past lives! For example, there is a township in Hunan with more than 200 reborn people, most of whom are just able to speak, that is, to talk about the past life! In addition, there is an American institution that studies past life memory, which studies about 2500 people with past life memory. They are also about 2 years old on average. These people begin to mention past life! There are also researches on near death experience and many hypnotists in the hypnotic world have the ability to hypnotize and recall the past life memory!
      As I said before, at the beginning, human beings can fly and shine! According to the moral level, humanity is mainly the change of individual size and shape, and so is the animal way. Therefore, the biological form of animal way may indeed have a similar evolutionary phenomenon of collective change over time. Maybe the demon king has not modified the real fossil chain on a large scale, but simply cleaned up human's life! In addition, there is also the phenomenon of first form change, which may be due to the willing force, but in fact it is also karma! For example, the paleontological three toed horse group thinks that its toes are not as good as hooves. Its desire will make the later three toed horse gradually evolve into hooves. Of course, can an individual continue to incarnate as a three toed horse According to the law of karma, all animals of the same kind are of the same kind! It is also possible that there will be no human for a period of time, and then other sentient beings will regenerate human and so on!
      According to the Theravada Buddhist theory, human beings have always been human beings. Why did civilization not record this phenomenon? Why did it not record history for more than thousands of years? There are also researchers who study Shanhaijing. They follow the route of Shanhaijing and explain that some of them may be Africa and America! From this point of view, Shanhaijing may be correct! The records of alien human beings, gods and ghosts may also lead to a discussion on the correctness of materialist evolutionism, which may be like the fossil chain of evolutionism! What the devil did!
      4. Theravada Buddhism, the so-called Hinayana Buddhism, has specific methods of meditation. It has 40 methods of meditation, and then uses concentration to observe the impermanence, bitterness and selflessness of the most basic unit of body, mind and non animal material, and moves towards liberation! There are 53 elements of psychological function, one is the heart which plays a cognitive role, and 52 are the heart which helps the heart. There are many laws of psychological function! After the psychological effect appears, it will disappear, and then the next heart will appear The same is true of matter. There are four elements in matter: Earth, water, fire and wind The existence condition of each element is the existence of the other three elements, which is similar to that of Chinese Taoism. Ground water should be negative, fire wind should be positive!)
      5. The problem of Theravada Buddhism! There is no beginning of samsara in Theravada Buddhism! And why is the world like this instead of something else? I don't think we have ever thought about the pain of reincarnation until now. Do we want to get rid of it? I personally feel that everyone has a beginning, and then the previous life of the first life is a system of fraud, but only the training goal of export is to achieve the goal of extricating from the Dharma export! The realization of the Dharma itself requires great wisdom and other achievements! So the world may be virtual, and all living beings can go out after completing the training goal!
      Finally, I can't continue to practice for some reasons! So just give logic!
