Since 1997, I’ve had several distortion and overdrive pedals. Never really loved any and eventually sold them after a week or two. And then, this came along and I decided to give it another shot. Absolute perfection, both in the front and in the back of my amp. So, I might need another one.
Just got one of these after doing quite a bit of research into Klon type, "transparent overdrives." Definitely lives up to the hype---I use this to drive a slightly dirty Marshall to a whole new level. Amazing clarity and punch. You really just can't go wrong with anything by EHX. this is no exception.
I had this pedal a few years back. Used it to drive the front of my Marshall DSL, while providing a little color of its own. Absolutely my favorite Overdrive pedal.
that was the jangliest SG I've ever heard, and this pedal is honestly the most incredible piece of guitar equipment I've seen for under a hundred dollars since the pick
I love this pedal, it's always turned on in my pedalboard. This pedal is very transparent and great for clean boost and boosting an overdrive or distortion pedal. I will definitely recommend this pedal without a doubt.
I have been playing this pedal for 2 weeks now and here's the deal... the middle of the knob setting's (10 - 2) on this pedal SOUND AMAZING!!! Fat, clear and perfect breakup. I don't care if the pedal is made to sound like a Clon, a colon or Uranus, whatever!!! its a great price on a great pedal. Oh and great demo also!
Great pedal. I use it all the time. Sounds perfect to me when the drive is up around 12 o'clock and the Volume is just under that around 10 or 11. Tone in the middle. Sounds really good.
This pedal is worth getting just for the clean boost! I find anything past 2 o clock on the drive gets a bit too trebly (for my liking), but at lower-mid settings, you can dial in some really amazing blues and classic rock tones. Out of all the Overdrives I've played so far (TS9, SD-1, TS9DX, Maxon OD9) The Soul Food was my favourite. although I'm really wanting to try the OD Glove as well. Thanks EHX!
I have had this pedal for a year now but really never truly "loved" it. Just got the new EHX Crayon in yesterday and THAT PEDAL KILLS IT!!! The crayon is the best EHX overdrive they sell! Check it out people.
It's absolutely amazing! Tons of headroom and absolutely transparent! It's too good to be true lol you don't loose and low end when you switch over and the mids are voiced perfectly. I stack it with my TS9 it's beautiful sounding..
I happen to play a telecaster typer guitar with a S. Duncan Quarter Pounder in the bridge. Even though the Soul Food is quite trebly when thr overdrive is past 12 o' clock, the quarter pounder gives me that midrange kick needed to cut through. Mind you, I also play through a Hot Rod Deville 212 with bright switch engaged. This pedal makes my solos sound so sweet and soulful. All you clean players who have a treble heavy rig, this pedal definitely works wonders. I also have a fulltone drive 2 with the comp cut switch engaged as my clean boost. For saturation, i actually use the Hot Rod's terrible distortion channel, but this pedal makes that channel more than useful. Great video too!
Here’s the truth. It doesn’t sound like a klon. It just doesn’t. My tumnus deluxe sounds more “open” and more klon like. I will say, the soulfood has similar characteristics but it’s different. It is it’s own beast. I find myself using the soulfood all the time. It’s like a tube screamer with a better mid range hump and more harmonics and dynamics. Like a klon, you can use it as a light OD, a full drive, a clean boost, or a pedal to be left on all night. Since they are different than other klon copies, they pair very well with them. My verdict: everybody should have one.
Opening sample sounds very much like a Germanium treble booster (like Dallas-Arbiter Rangemaster). Whole vid sounds legit and very old-school. Sounds like it does a good job adding both mid dirt and focus. Probably great for anyone who needs more clarity/cut.
It's hard for me to tell w/ guitar atm -- what amount of the pedal offers clean boost, and what amount offers distortion (anything that affects tone and breaks it). How much of this happens within the pedal, rather than depends on driving the AMP? Cheers lol ty if you answer :P
I have a Soul Food, and I absolutely LOVE it! It sounds incredible and it's definitely transparent with that little extra kick of mid to add to the mix. It's my favorite pedal on my board, and as a second gain stage pedal, I'm totally going for the east river drive next. Keep being awesome, EHX!
Like your stuff John, on how you present yourself and how you promote this pedal. You do it professionally, but with a laid back attitude and humour, at the end of the promotion. No big deal John, all in fun. and love of music A++++1
i wish you guys would quit coming out with these awesome overdrives..... i only need one and you guys keep pumping out different ones that all sound great. who the hell needs 5 overdrives? haha
Actually a very few pedals could beat EHX,, English Muffn, Its the only pedal that sound so powerful, so organic, whether clean whether overdriven, every note sound ALIVE if you kow what I mean, its like playin naturally overdriven MArshall plexy -- so thats close as possible to perfect pedal. I simply cannot get bored of sound, every note sound so full ! And if overdriven --thats close as possible to original sound of AC/DC, Led Zepellin and Black Sabbath. The next on list is Boss Sd-1. If I putt Sd-1 with just slight drive in chain before English muffn , solo sound is outstanding !
I'm using it everyday. Like it with a very smooth amount of overdrive, and that's an decent buffer / booster. But it doesn't sound good when plugged next to vintage fuzz circuit pedals, compared to other overdrive pedals.
This is a great overdrive and it really is nice and transparent (guitar tone really shines through) I use it to add a little sparkle when playing soft and a little gritty when I dig in. I prefer it over my true bypass modded ts9 and ocd not to mention Its a Klon clone!
Lets see... Those who paid thousands for a Klon already: "The Klon sounds much better and the EHX isn't even close". Those who are not foolish enough to pay thousands for an overdrive pedal: "I don't care if it sounds the same as a Klon, but at 60 bucks, this is a great pedal".
I'd have a much better idea of the tonal characteristics of the pedal if the bypass level was the same volume as the processed signal. Yes, I understand it boosts volume, but I'm not considering it as a preamp. I want to know what it does to the signal.
The only way to achieve that is for the pedal to do absolutely nothing. All of these types of pedals are always going to be a different volume to the bypassed signal as saturation results in a non-linear output. At best you could achieve a similar 'perceived' volume, but there's too many variables that creators cannot account for with online demos. Quite often the distorted signal is quieter in terms of peak volume and perceived as louder as we hear the average volume rather than the loudest aspects.
Just got one today and I love it’s great paired up with ma tube screamer but where’s best to put ma big muff before or after and also do I use the buffer or true bypass when using it with ma big muff???cause I’m using it in a live setting with ma band
The way I use my Soul Food is by turning the gain all the way up and the volume at nine o clock and the treble around half way. That way, it gives me such a righteous ACDC tone, which when coupled to my OD Glove is by far the best overdrive I found. But I have one question, would it be possible to get an Electro Harmonix pedal which marries two Soul Foods with each other for that extra kick? You guys could call it "The second helping"
I second that suggestion! I was thinking last night of a "2 in 1" for this where you can have two different settings -- one to color rhythm tone, another for lead.
Man! Awesome sounding pedal. I imagine this pedal would work awesome for pushing an already pretty dirty amp into screamville by using it as a clean boost. (Overdrive down and Volume cranked) I was wondering what the output on this pedal is. 15db? Also, would you recommend any other pedal for this purpose? Seems this would be great for that.
SOUNDZ COOL! BUT THEN AGAIN ID EXPECT NOTHING ELSE FROM EHX BEST PEDALS OUT THERE I JUST WISH I COULD AFFORD 1 OF EACH AND THE POWER ADAPTER I HAVE A BIG MUFF & A BIG MUFF WICKER I WOULD LOVE THEM ALL
Could you please test/review/show you overdrive pedals also in front of a crunched amp...because I guess a lot of guys do that, to get a really meaty heavy metal/hard rock kind of OD
I'm thinking of building a pedal board (cause why not?) What pedals do you recommend? I wanna play music like pearl jam, nirvana, mother love bone, bands like that.
Chris Goodrich I would recommend getting yourself the basics (Overdrive, Reverb, Wah-Wah). Bands like Nirvana and early Pearl Jam didn't really use a plethora of pedals to have the need for a board. Having just a few pedals, such as the types I mentioned, should do the trick to play their music. Sometimes Kurt would use either a Chorus or Flanger to his songs, but only for specific parts.
+Chris Goodrich You would also need some kind of fuzz, preferably a Big Muff (Pearl Jam used one IIRC) Cobain had also on some songs a pretty nasty distortion. Chorus, Flanger (like Bryan said) and Tremolo and occasionally a delay pedal are also needed.
I don't recall Cobain using high fuzz pedals. If you listen to his live shows his drive sounds super mid range and thin. I think he used crappy Roland distortion pedals, which was just his style, sloppy and full of emotion.
Two different sounds. The OD Glove is a higher gain pedal, whereas the Soul Food is a more mild sound. If you want a lot of gain, the Glove is just right. According to EHX's website, the Soul Food is based on the Klon Centaur which is a really popular (and stupidly expensive) pedal. I must say, I really liked what I heard in this demo
Thats one of the reasons i liked the glove so much over my tube screamer. I like being able to "dial back" to the amount overdrive i want ... one of the worst feelings is turning up the tube screamer and hitting that wall where theres no where left to go. Thanks for the info
what do you use the GLOVE for? Infront of a clean amp, or as a boost? I am thinking about getting one, to use it infront of my clean Roland Cube at home to get nice distortion and to boost my tube head when playing with my band.
i use it as a both a boost and a distortion ... I play through a roland AC90 and it sounds great. The glove replaced my tube screamer because the glove has way more distortion and you can dial it back to what you like unlike the tube screamer which to me seems to never have enough distortion when you need it. The one minus to the pedal is that you need a screwdriver just to change the battery and the pedal starts to sound bad if the battery starts to get low.
This pedal adds overdrive but does not compressor add a mid boost, like the east river drive does. This is s klon clone, the east river is a tube screamer clone.
I got one about 2 months ago..LOVE IT!!.. its a very good pedal. I don't think it follows the Tube Screamer-ish tones at all. s far as the Klon Ive listened to and many many demos and its in the ballpark without being a duplicate it firges its own tones as well. Great pedal indeed especially is ya want your fuzzy sound to be just that a times fuzzy without all the wool..Every board should have one
Its a different feel if you boost in front with this rather than use a preamp boost. It would be great if you could try it with your amp first before buying.
@@EHX nice! But the reason why im curious with the EQ - soul food combo is for versatility, i simply wonder can i get a similiar TS bluesy tone if i crank the mids on EQ, since soul food is a transparent drive its default state should not be amplifying a certain frequency 😄 and since TS is a mid boost i wonder if it could produce a similiar ttone with the soul food if i combine it with a cranked mids EQ pedal idk though i havent tried it nor bought it hence why im curious😄👍🏻 correct me if im wrong though
