I just bought an HJC V10 and wore it home from the shop. I got half way and thought...oh no, what have I done! Whistled like crazy. I ride with my visor up below 100kph usually, with a sun visor or sunnies. Found your vid when I got home and did the Velcro right across the top (mono brow!).Took it for a spin and problem solved - thank you!
Hi Derek. As I mentioned, I would install the velcro to run the test. And I did it. Incredible. I was able to ride at 100km/h with the screen open. Fantastic. If you allow me, I would like to create a TH-cam video in Portuguese talking about it and presenting your video with the solution. This will help a lot of folks here in Brazil. Well done.
Sorry, not on here very often. I would be delighted! Please do (and if you have already, I perfectly understand). I'm living outside Barcelona now. We need those visors open! Happy riding.
You are a smart man with exceptional analytical skills. I faced the same issue with the Scorpion R1 helmet, although I didn’t encounter this problem with the Schuberth C5. Thank you for keeping it concise valuable video!
Hey Master, Thank you. I knew I was not the only person in the planet with this problem, but same as you I couldn't find anything about it and it is not letting me enjoy my CBR 600 F4 and the thing is that I really like my helmet but I hate it at the same time. I though the whistle came from the air passing between the visor and the helmet not over the visor, but I gonna try this right now. Thank you again
Let us know. I'm certain this isn't the only cause or the only solution. But it definitely ONE of the causes, this solution works for it. The basic idea, though is: break up the smooth flow of the wind over the spot that's annoying you. The joy of velcro is there's no harm done by trying some in suspect-spots and it's cheap and easy to get. Happy riding.
thank you , thank you , thank you, i have 3 shoei helmets, one brand new that all whistle like crazy with the visor open, this works like a charm, amazing, dead quiet, i used the soft side of the velcro and the hook side just to try it and i think the soft side works better than the hook side, it works so good i don't think i will experiment with anything else. you a friggin genius man/. get a patent if you can.
Thank you so much Derek. I had a whistle coming from my otherwise fantastic Forcite Mk1 Founders Edition smart helmet. It was driving me insane. Your hack got rid of it. I can now enjoy wearing this helmet :)
I stumbled across this looking by chance, I had been bringing my visor down a notch or two to stop the whistling, going to try this though. Thanks for the heads up
Hi Derek, I ride a GS 1250 with an AGV K3 helmet and usually partially lift ( first notch) my visor for more airflow at lower speeds. And yes…I must admit I whistle when I do not know all the words! 🤣 Thanks for the info. Marc, Quebec, Canada 😉🏍
Your idea inspired me to experiment with other materials to reduce wind noise emitted from top edge of visor when in full up position. So far I've succeeded with a round firm piece of shoelace held in place at the top of the visor ( not on the edge though) with hockey tape. The hockey tape is fabric like and nicely flexible and peals off without leaving residue. Next trial is with a nice bead of clear drying caulk in the same place where the string and tape were. With the caulking I can cut out segments of it at different points to fine tune the disruption of air flow over the visor.
@@quesreal2552 Ah ok cheers. I’ve got an AGV similar to vid lid. I think mine is the vents as block wind with hand and quietens a bit. I guess all visors are pretty much the same though so I’ll try your idea🫡
@@t-rex4211 May you have a steady hand when applying the caulk, good luck and good day, thanks for chatting, perhaps you can update me with how it all works out.
We do this on aircraft leading edge on some aircraft . Not for the same reasons . but to reduce unwanted flow of air over the wing . This is to direct air flow over the wing at a lower air speed and in high alfa angles of the wing . As it looks what your using the Velcro for is really doing the same thing but in a effective way but a bit cruder way . Is it worth it well vary much so . A great Idea . Matter of fact this can be used for many aspects of the helmet it self in stoping the anoying whissling noises and wind buffing . A good way to find out is to tape paper strips on to the helmet and to use a fan to find all the turbulances around the helmet Using this to make the air going around the helmet and over the strips of paper to flatten out onto the helmet . If there is any turbulance the paper will be pulled away from the helmet . If there is no tubulances and a true flow of air the paper will cleing to the helmet . There is not prevention of this from the back side of the helmet and that cant be help but in front , side and around vents it can .
My Shoei NXR2 is currently back with Shoei after struggling with a whistle when the visor is shut but not fully latched down for the last 6 months. My guess is same issue. Think you've cracked a major issue with helmet design here. Thank you for sharing this
@@ramonovietsj no, they were useless, however, I accidentally found out that one of their top level racing helmets has a very similar visor mechanism, which didn't always drop down. I bought one on the off chance it may work on my helmet and allow it to be open just a bit. It did and it does. Through the winter, with less air getting under the helmet the whistle is less anyway, but I can now choose to have the helmet cracked open if i choose to. Can't remember the name of the other helmet, Spirit or similar... their £700+ one, visor mech looks a bit like carbon, but isn't. Shoei were useless, just said it wasn't a manufacturing fault. Thanks a lot for the idea. I have the same issue now that I have moved from a versys 650 to a F 800 gt; where the riging position is the one you describe. I have the puig touring screen which is higher than the original and protects your chest, shoulder... BUT sends the air directly towards that area of the helmet. Let´s try your solution, for its simple, cheap and, most of all, logical Greetings from Spain
Going to try your trick because my 650 USD Arai Tour x5 has a terrible whistling noise from 35 mph with the visor open... The higher the peak, the louder the whistling gets. Arai's official answer to the problem was "close your visor then".
Funny how I came to this video - I purchased a Schuberth S3 and, despite mild whistling during the test, after paying for it the whistling just went through the roof. In my case, it's when the helmet is cracked open to the smallest gap - ie, driving in traffic and not wanting to steam up. It's driving me crazy and I just can't have it. One of the reasons for getting a premium helmet is having the ability to control how many many degrees the visor opens; if having at the lowest setting turns it into a musical instrument, then it's not a premium product.
Uau. I have 3 helmets and all do that. It is really annoying. Interesting that I came here right now because I am at N-th attempt to solve it, at least with my Bell Star Helmet. I just went out to test another workaround. Solved it but really really ugly solution. I put something between the helmet and lens. And like you, I am for ages trying to find a solution in internt. So, finally the offered me to exchange by another model. Worse comes to worse … you went on a motorcycle ride.
Yesterday, I bought an LS2 STORM. Whenever I go above 90KM/H I can hear that whistling sound on the left ear only. What could possibly be the cause? The noise is fading away when I am putting my hand on the left side of the visor. Please suggest something.
