เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 31 ต.ค. 2006
I'm Derek B. Miller. I'm the author of Norwwgian by Night, The Girl in Green, American by Day, and the forthcoming novels Quiet Time (2020 on Audible Originals), Radio Life (JFB, Quercus, 2020), and Twilight Crimes (2021). Here I discuss writing; I interview other writers; explore topics like moving from a novel to a screenplay, and … all kinds of stuff. I'm free-wheeling this and I'm happy to answer your questions. I'm not a "video guy." I'm a writer. Think of it as a Masterclass in writing with ideas you haven't heard elsewhere. Thanks for your interest.
How to stop the whistling noise on your helmet
This is the cheap and useful solution to getting rid of that annoying whistle while riding a motorcycle with your full-face helmet in the OPEN visor position. I'm just a novelist and I don't need you to click and subscribe. I looked all over the internet and found nothing so I solved it and here's my answer. Happy riding.

Whisky, Motorcycles, and Literature (Part I of III)
มุมมอง 543 ปีที่แล้ว
Derek B. Miller (author of Norwegian by Night, American by Day, The Girl in Green, Radio Life, Quiet Time and the forthcoming How to Find Your Way in the Dark) talks with best friend Melker Mabeck in eastern Switzerland (in a dark room) about 10 years of riding together, how love of bikes, and what it's like being a novelist.
Touring Switzerland on two Ducatis
มุมมอง 313 ปีที่แล้ว
Last year Melker and I toured Switzerland on a Ducati Streetfighter 848 (me) and a Ducati GT 1000 (him). Here, I introduce the trip and talk nonsense. Other videos will have more specific nonsense.
#10 Risk
มุมมอง 334 ปีที่แล้ว
Risk. We all face it as writers and artists. So what is it? How do we deal with it? What's the difference between the anxiety of choice, and taking risks when faced with choice? It's interesting stuff! Let's talk.
#9 Creation during Crisis
มุมมอง 674 ปีที่แล้ว
You're an artist and most likely a writer. George Floyd has been murdered, protests rage, emotion pulses through the heart of the country, and you feel powerless and useless. I want to talk to you about why you are neither and what to do with those feelings. Because we need you and what you will later create.
Derek B. Miller's 10 Rules of Writing
มุมมอง 2364 ปีที่แล้ว
Elmore Leonard gave us 10 Rules of Writing. Many writers have played along and come up with their own. Here are mine; accompanied by explanations and a lot of hand-waving.
#8 The First Chapter
มุมมอง 324 ปีที่แล้ว
Your first chapter is a sandbox for exploration and discovery while you begin the journey into your new story. In this discussion I talk about what that means and ways of approaching the challenges - and joys - of working through this foundation to your new novel.
#7 The Word Count Fallcy
มุมมอง 174 ปีที่แล้ว
In which I rescue you from people telling you to "write a novel in November!" or social media feeds trying to encourage you to write a certain number of words a day. I get the notion of "word count" in perspective and share some ways of thinking about productivity you may not have considered before.
#6 What is a Story?
มุมมอง 384 ปีที่แล้ว
If you're planning to write one, you're going to need to know what a story is. A story is a genre of communication. What are its elements? Once you grasp these you can start to understand what you're doing (or failing to do) to keep the listener or reader engaged. - Derek B. Miller is the author of Norwegian by Night, The Girl in Green, American by Day, and the forthcoming Radio Life.
#5 Research & Writing
มุมมอง 504 ปีที่แล้ว
Novelists are told to "do research." But what does that mean? In this discussion, I break down the term into reconnoitering (an ungainly but helpful word) and purposive investigation. I explain how different forms of investigation are needed at different stages of writing. Come untangle the intellectual mess with me and get ready to start your novel.
#4 Where do ideas come from?
มุมมอง 554 ปีที่แล้ว
In #4 I answer the age-old question, "where do ideas come from" by providing a framework and some vocabulary in which to think about, and discuss the creation of story ideas. • Novelist Derek B. Miller (Norwegian by Night, The Girl in Green, American by Day)
#3: To plot or not to plot. Case Study: Norwegian by Night
มุมมอง 1274 ปีที่แล้ว
In #2 I gave you a theoretical overview of the plot-or-not-to-plot problematic and discussed how different writers approach it, how different kinds of stories create different imperatives for addressing it, and how you can negotiate those challenges. In #3 I make it personal and discuss my first novel, NORWEGIAN BY NIGHT, and explain how I addressed it as a writer. • Novelist Derek B. Miller (N...
#2: To plot or not to plot?
มุมมอง 844 ปีที่แล้ว
As a writer, you've probably heard contradictory advice on whether to plot out your novel in advance or to trust the story to reveal itself. Here, I untangle the advance and provide framework in which to think about this. I consider the arguments of James Patterson, John Irving, Richard Ford, Richard Russo, Margaret Atwood and others. • Novelist Derek B. Miller (Norwegian by Night, The Girl in ...
I just bought an HJC V10 and wore it home from the shop. I got half way and thought...oh no, what have I done! Whistled like crazy. I ride with my visor up below 100kph usually, with a sun visor or sunnies. Found your vid when I got home and did the Velcro right across the top (mono brow!).Took it for a spin and problem solved - thank you!
Aussie here, thanks mate. Ended up putting a full length 10mm wide (3/8") strip of Velcro on top of visor. Worked a treat. Helmet Shark GT Carbon
I just bought a brand new SCHUBERTH C5 and whistles like crazy
You are a smart man with exceptional analytical skills. I faced the same issue with the Scorpion R1 helmet, although I didn’t encounter this problem with the Schuberth C5. Thank you for keeping it concise valuable video!
cool stuff,
Even when my visor is closed. I'm experiencing a winning noise. Will it help.
Thank you it helped
My idea would be to use a fast dry superglue to mould little peaks onto the top yourself. I might try it on my HJC V10.
You think those clear silicon rubber cabinet door bumper strips will work?
This was wonderful. Just straight to the point. The "low production quality" actually makes it better. Thanks.
My visur is shut and after 80 kmh visiling is start ,i think you help me with your beer example
You should 'dragons den' that s**t and make a million :) You could have studded ones for the punks, Rhinestone ones for the Cowboys, fluffy ones for the muppets! Honestly though... You have saved my sanity. Thank you.
Going to try your trick because my 650 USD Arai Tour x5 has a terrible whistling noise from 35 mph with the visor open... The higher the peak, the louder the whistling gets. Arai's official answer to the problem was "close your visor then".
My helmet whistle even when the visor is down. Should I try this same solution?
So ride with the Visor down, or the modular part of a helmet down. That's stupid to ride with these up. Of course your gonna get noise.. how stupid...😅
Try riding with a closed visor all the time in my country when it's like 45°C and you're moving in heavy city traffic... My helmet is whistling even when doing 30kmph.
Thanks, Dr Derek. It was fun learning this.
Thank you , Im gonna try it👍
thank you , thank you , thank you, i have 3 shoei helmets, one brand new that all whistle like crazy with the visor open, this works like a charm, amazing, dead quiet, i used the soft side of the velcro and the hook side just to try it and i think the soft side works better than the hook side, it works so good i don't think i will experiment with anything else. you a friggin genius man/. get a patent if you can.
We do this on aircraft leading edge on some aircraft . Not for the same reasons . but to reduce unwanted flow of air over the wing . This is to direct air flow over the wing at a lower air speed and in high alfa angles of the wing . As it looks what your using the Velcro for is really doing the same thing but in a effective way but a bit cruder way . Is it worth it well vary much so . A great Idea . Matter of fact this can be used for many aspects of the helmet it self in stoping the anoying whissling noises and wind buffing . A good way to find out is to tape paper strips on to the helmet and to use a fan to find all the turbulances around the helmet Using this to make the air going around the helmet and over the strips of paper to flatten out onto the helmet . If there is any turbulance the paper will be pulled away from the helmet . If there is no tubulances and a true flow of air the paper will cleing to the helmet . There is not prevention of this from the back side of the helmet and that cant be help but in front , side and around vents it can .
I am going to add this here first as a thank you very much. Wish everyone that found a solution to a problem would share it! Second this happens with the MT Thunder 4 SV. Maybe in the future guys with the same helmet can find the solution here. Thank you again Derek! Safe riding to you!
Does it work?
Bedazzle it instead to give it more pizzazz 😎
Funny how I came to this video - I purchased a Schuberth S3 and, despite mild whistling during the test, after paying for it the whistling just went through the roof. In my case, it's when the helmet is cracked open to the smallest gap - ie, driving in traffic and not wanting to steam up. It's driving me crazy and I just can't have it. One of the reasons for getting a premium helmet is having the ability to control how many many degrees the visor opens; if having at the lowest setting turns it into a musical instrument, then it's not a premium product.
THIS IS JUST GREAT!!!!!!!!! Thanks bro
Do you color the velcro on the outside or inside?
Thanks you I tried it, it worked also you can stick that inside also that also works more neat and do not hinder the aerodynamics of stock
Anyone know any good quiet helmets drop a comment, cheers
Hello Derek, here's update, small bead of clear drying caulking going across the visor(not on the edge though) works perfectly.
Your idea inspired me to experiment with other materials to reduce wind noise emitted from top edge of visor when in full up position. So far I've succeeded with a round firm piece of shoelace held in place at the top of the visor ( not on the edge though) with hockey tape. The hockey tape is fabric like and nicely flexible and peals off without leaving residue. Next trial is with a nice bead of clear drying caulk in the same place where the string and tape were. With the caulking I can cut out segments of it at different points to fine tune the disruption of air flow over the visor.
What lid did you do it on?
@@t-rex4211 an HJC lid, NY current one.
@@t-rex4211 ...my current one, not ny
@@quesreal2552 Ah ok cheers. I’ve got an AGV similar to vid lid. I think mine is the vents as block wind with hand and quietens a bit. I guess all visors are pretty much the same though so I’ll try your idea🫡
@@t-rex4211 May you have a steady hand when applying the caulk, good luck and good day, thanks for chatting, perhaps you can update me with how it all works out.
you should have more videos
Man, I like your delivery. Straight. Info focused. No frills. Keep it up
Thank you so much!!!! After 2 months of terrible whistling I can finally enjoy my new helmet
My pleasure.
try a bead of clear drying caulking, you can shape it however you need and it's water proof
Hi Derek, I ride a GS 1250 with an AGV K3 helmet and usually partially lift ( first notch) my visor for more airflow at lower speeds. And yes…I must admit I whistle when I do not know all the words! 🤣 Thanks for the info. Marc, Quebec, Canada 😉🏍
My Shoei NXR2 is currently back with Shoei after struggling with a whistle when the visor is shut but not fully latched down for the last 6 months. My guess is same issue. Think you've cracked a major issue with helmet design here. Thank you for sharing this
Did Shoei offer a solution?
@@ramonovietsj no, they were useless, however, I accidentally found out that one of their top level racing helmets has a very similar visor mechanism, which didn't always drop down. I bought one on the off chance it may work on my helmet and allow it to be open just a bit. It did and it does. Through the winter, with less air getting under the helmet the whistle is less anyway, but I can now choose to have the helmet cracked open if i choose to. Can't remember the name of the other helmet, Spirit or similar... their £700+ one, visor mech looks a bit like carbon, but isn't. Shoei were useless, just said it wasn't a manufacturing fault. No, it wasn't, it was a design fault. Next time I'm getting an Arai.
@@jowen85 Thanks for sharing!
how come no more have liked this vid of yours , i didnt know this and its awesome tech for a cheap solution!!
Hi Derek. As I mentioned, I would install the velcro to run the test. And I did it. Incredible. I was able to ride at 100km/h with the screen open. Fantastic. If you allow me, I would like to create a TH-cam video in Portuguese talking about it and presenting your video with the solution. This will help a lot of folks here in Brazil. Well done.
Sorry, not on here very often. I would be delighted! Please do (and if you have already, I perfectly understand). I'm living outside Barcelona now. We need those visors open! Happy riding.
(I meant Brazil, of course!)
Try a bead of clear drying caulking instead. You can shape and form it however you need, it's waterproof.
@@quesreal2552 Good idea. I will try
Uau. I have 3 helmets and all do that. It is really annoying. Interesting that I came here right now because I am at N-th attempt to solve it, at least with my Bell Star Helmet. I just went out to test another workaround. Solved it but really really ugly solution. I put something between the helmet and lens. And like you, I am for ages trying to find a solution in internt. I am right way to apply those Velcros and run for a test. I really fed up with the whistling. Thanks and regards.
How'd it go?
@@dbmiller6 Unbelievable. How something so simple solves an annoying problem. When I bought the helmet I activated the warranty complaining about this. Sent the helmet to them and the answer back was "Helmet is within the specification and no problems found". I replied that sometimes the visor has to be open, running slow in hot weather for example and again they returner saying "The helmet is designed to operate with the visor down". So, finally the offered me to exchange by another model. Just saying all this to reinforce who bizarre it is and acknowledge how simple is the solution implemented by Schuberth and most of all you insight in this workaround. Now, as you say, It is in perfect NEW operation mode even up to 100km/h. Great content from you, Thank you.
@everyone Please tell me what the name of the German Helmet was ? I want to by one... thank youu😊
Schuberth. The C3 Pro, but that's older now. Look into the C5 now. It's wonderful but pricey. Worth it if you can afford it.
I stumbled across this looking by chance, I had been bringing my visor down a notch or two to stop the whistling, going to try this though. Thanks for the heads up
Try a bead of clear drying caulking, you can shape it however you want and it's waterproof
Riding a monster 796 with a K6S brought me here… $900 and dealing with the whistling
try a bead of clear drying caulking, you can shape it however you need and it's water proof
Thanks, I have the same problem with a new Shark helmet when it's shut!😬
This dude is funny and smart
What can I say, but thank you so much.
My pleasure
I was riding yesterday on a new bike the first time and had a terrible whistle over about 40mph but my helmet was fully closed , any ideas ? thanks
Duuudddee, if this works, I will literally send money to your favourite charity. My new Shoei Glamster came in at $800AUS and I was beyond disappointed re the whistle… I’ll let you know (and for real, will donate $$) Have a great day!
Also, on the top of the visor, or under??
Can confirm- I bought little Velcro circles as a test and it honestly worked. More tweaking, sure but as a fix, this is pure genius. $50 to your charity of choice is ready to be sent. Thanks mate. (From a happy Australian who hates having the visor down in our current heat!)
My NXR2 too
@@frontsnatch It was my pleasure. Happy riding and all the best.
vDo you color the velcro on the outside or inside?
Yesterday, I bought an LS2 STORM. Whenever I go above 90KM/H I can hear that whistling sound on the left ear only. What could possibly be the cause? The noise is fading away when I am putting my hand on the left side of the visor. Please suggest something.
I have the same helmet and same problem, it's happening even with visor down, Did you find a solution?
@@milosklimovic3997 no bro, there is no solution. I got it replaced with some other brand.
Thanks a lot for the idea. I have the same issue now that I have moved from a versys 650 to a F 800 gt; where the riging position is the one you describe. I have the puig touring screen which is higher than the original and protects your chest, shoulder... BUT sends the air directly towards that area of the helmet. Let´s try your solution, for its simple, cheap and, most of all, logical Greetings from Spain
Thanks mate. Great to know. I’ll give it a try!
It fixed it!
Thank you so much Derek. I had a whistle coming from my otherwise fantastic Forcite Mk1 Founders Edition smart helmet. It was driving me insane. Your hack got rid of it. I can now enjoy wearing this helmet :)
And that's my reward. I'm delighted. Ride safe, pass it on!
@@dbmiller6 , I have definitely passed it on and will continue to do so. Great work, thanks again :)
I had a helmet whistles with visor down. Every time I turn my head. Any idea? Thanks for video.
If it's the "flute problem," the diagnostic question is: What is (or could be) causing it? Maybe a vent? Maybe the hinge? Try adding some velcro or something else that will break up wind in suspect locations. Riding with something CHANGED as an experiment is my recommendation. Worse comes to worse … you went on a motorcycle ride.
Same issue.
