Hello Driver. So glad you were able to spare some time to drop by to catch today's upload. What is your take on the Emissions Friendly Engines? what have your experiences been with them? Love to hear your thoughts.

Don't blame the engine manufacturers for these problems. These companies were mandated by the government to produce smoke free emissions engine. It all goes back to government control 😮😢

I had an accert cat and sold it to buy a 1996 Pete with a redtop Cummins. Best move I made in 35 years of owning trucks! When I purchased it, it was in desperate need of an overhaul. My local shop overhauled it with genuine Cummins parts and I replaced everything including air compressor, turbo, water and oil pumps for less than $17,000. It's set at 525 hp and gets over 7 mpg. And NO emissions BS!

The most dependable, reliable , inexpensive to operate and maintain for a O/O in American trucking industry is DETROIT SERIES 60 12.7. No offense to Cat and Cummins boys out here.
Great engines. But , the ole Detroit 12.7 will go in history.

You're absolutely correct. Mechanics were never trained because there were no schools on the emissions system to go too. Every manufacturer did things different. The company I worked for bought 2 Macks with DEF. One ended up under the lemon law. The other is a spare. The old mechanical engine trucks kept the company going.

I'm living proof on these def trucks, I bought it with the company saying everything was fixed, boy, was I wrong, not even 3 weeks in running the egr cooler went out, injectors, and the dpf filter went out, cost me right under $14,000. I am a single owner operator, and am going under because of these pieces of crap. I am now considering either trading up to an older truck or just quiting driving altogether. I am looking for a good jew lawyer to sue the EPA, FMCSA, and the DOT(ha ha good luck right?) But I do think truck drivers should get together and TRY to make big brother pay for our repairs since they are the ones mandating this stupid ideology of cleaner air and cleaner emissions. What a joke..

I agree . Been a company driver my whole time driving . Started in 2006 when I was 21 . The pre emission trucks down to the truck with a mechanical engine are more dependable and reliable . These emission trucks are total garbage .

Im kind of amazed engineers haven’t figured these out by this point. I knew after 2007 there would be a few years of teething problems but it’s amazing that all these years later the same problems persist. My brothers friend just shut down his trucking company and sold off all his trucks. He had 15 similarly equipped Kenworth W900’s all with Cat 3406’s. i can tell you he got a pretty penny for all of them. Amazing how much the value of these 1990’s trucks have gone up since they’re so much more reliable

If I could build trucks in my own Factory they would be replicas of the Peterbilt 359 extended hood with Cats 6 and 4
    All mechanical gauges everything
If I was the head of the government in charge of trucking I would promote independent truck stops all over the country I would double the freeway system big carriers wouldn't be subsidized by the taxpayer bonuses would be paid to independent truck drivers with the good safety record and just to keep things on the safe side no loaded trucks grossing over 65,000 no log books

As a diesel mechanic for over 45 years, I do not see how an owner operator can afford the emission loaded trucks. A check engine light will leave a truck beside the road. If an emission filled truck is more efficient, it'll eat ever bit of savings and twice the cost in repairs and parts. Now the Biden administration is trying to force electric vehicles down our throats, and there will be NO repairs by the owner operators because of the lack of knowledge and software to support it. This is also driving the cost of transportation through the roof.

There are many videos of old trucks being resurrected and put back on the road. Of course they can't go to California with them but most of those drivers don't go there anyways. I've also learned that most mechanics would prefer an old mechanical truck any day.
A nice truck doesn't have to be a new truck.

Driving a 2017 Volvo with a Cummins ISX.
Had it since new and it's the very worst truck I have ever had in 44 years of trucking . Between the ELD and emission engines the government has taken all the fun out of trucking. I just drive this truck until the check engine light comes on.
The stress both bring to my life isn't worth it , and i can't wait to retire in a couple years and just play with OLD TRUCKS.

Yup. Im a company driver for now. Dealing with emissions issues cost me $35,000 and I eventually went the delete route to try and save the engine. Sold the truck as is and will never buy another emissions truck again.

  • @A_A_Ron_G

Anyone making the jump from company driver to owner op needs to buy an '07 or older, preferably an '03 or older (no egr), with a Detroit, and a manual transmission. They are exponentially cheaper to repair and maintain. Any shop can work on an old Detroit. The night shift kid at TA can fix it. Or a decent shade tree mechanic. Or watch some youtube and fix it yourself. Parts are cheap(er) and easy to find. It's not about your comfort. It's not about style. It's about making (and keeping) money. Let go of your ego. No one cares what your truck looks like, especially not the shipper. You'll get paid the same rate as the brand new pretty truck in the dock next to you, and keep more of it in your pocket.

I work and an ag dealership, and we once sold a 35 hp lawnmower with pretty much every option in it. I wasn’t even half way through setting everything up, and with 1.5 engine hours it already needed a regen. It was sold for 60k Canadian, and was a complete and udder nightmare for the one summer the owner had it until getting rid of it. Not only garbage, but embarrassing for the dealership selling as well. As far as other things are concerned, def pumps seem to die constantly, updates do practically nothing, and most owners have problems anytime we get real cold weather. Being in Canada, one cold week will keep us busy fixing for a month. Unacceptable

Diesel mechanic of 22 years. Was trained on these early to current DEF systems. Always a headache. The majority of the problems are from the drivers who do not tell the shop when the truck needs a burn. Or the light was on so long. We had to go on a road call and use the computer to do a burn. 80 percent of after treatment issues are driver related. Don’t get me wrong. These systems still suck 😂

    @bluedogsalvage5246 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

How many of these engines were actually unreliable? None of them! You are talking about peripheral add on components that are problematic. Much of the problems with emissions devices is opetator error, as in butt loads of idling!
I have news for ya. Try getting parts for a 20 year old truck! I know firsthand. I have a fleet of trucks all older than 1992 model year!
The first thing you learn is you better own a microfiche and reader for your truck, or own a subscription to parts diagrams to get part numbers. Once your truck is old enough, a dealer will not be cooperative on parts service unless you have a part number in hand. And sometimes they don't even help then, which relegates you to online or mom n pops.
Used parts for the old trucks get hard to find in serviceable condition.
As some of my trucks pass into the 40 year range its becoming a real challenge to keep them going. A lot of adaptation goes on to fit non-native parts, or outright fabrication!
Then there's finding someone who either will, or even can work on your truck! Older mechs aren't too inclined to take on antiques due to the issues getting parts, or even the numerous problems with potentially poorly maintained trucks. A mechanic around 40 today probably at best came into his work during Stage 2 or 3 diesel emissions, which was just using the HEUI/common rail fuel systems and VGT turbos. These younger guys have no clue about older trucks due to not touching them frequently, if at all!
So, be careful how you present this advice. There's no down time incurred like that of a 20+ year old truck with a inexperienced wrench who can't find parts!
One saving grace is the future of electric. Its there, the technology just has to catch up to heavy trucks, and it will. Hopefully the butt ugly styling changes from the current looks.
One thing a owner operatir could do is buy a very cheap worn out truck and rebirth that truck as a hybrid electric. A hybrid uses a diesel powered generator to charge its batteries, which on turn power the electric drivetrain. Its efficient, and you have all the range and more of a conventional diesel with way less fuel used. I have converted 2 of my trucks to hybrid. Its saved a lot on fuel costs. Their drivetrains were all at complete out of frame overhaul, so i was spending money one way or the other. There are more than just fuel cost savings too. You get tax breaks, have a super quiet truck with barely any vibration, very fast fuel ups! + + + +.
Trucking is never going to be what it was prior to the 70s, so quit crying about it and the future. Costs are passed on if you're a smart businessman. Change happens. Just look forward and move in that direction. There is no more miserable of a person than a crytit looking to the past that will never come again.

Hi ! What ? Fuel in the DEF tank ? wow ! i wonder how they did that ? I would believe more possible to put the DEF in the fuel tank ! So, if you can t get an old truck 2007 and older, your best bet is to delete your emission systeme when your engine runs out of warranty ! And make sure it s done by proffesionals and make sure you got someone to fix it other than dealers cux they just won t fix it if it s deleted ! I have experience in the field ! i drove a few deleted trucks ! deleting cost over 2,000 $ ca. ! So i saw the difference before and after delete ! there s quite a difference. ! I know...not legal, of course, but they tricked us ! we trick them the best we can ! Better be a driver these days ! lol ! well ! it s all history for me ! i m retired now and i don t miss it ! if i do, i watch trucking vids ! interesting point. The Detroit Diesel is ownd by Daimler Trucks, so Mercedes. DD13 and DD15 are basically european engines, made for the Mercedes Actros. The A26 and S13 engines from International are from MAN(A26) and Scania(S13). Of course with DEF in Europe. The PACCAR Engines are used by DAF in Europe. DAF is ownd by PACCAR.
Why are DEF things not a thing in Europe?

As a retired Volvo and Mack dealership partsman, 31 years, the EPA ruined trucks. Electronic fuel injection was the greatest thing. Rolling in a set of rod and main bearings went from 500k to 750k-1M miles. Same block, same bearings part numbers. EGR and DPF and DEF systems made trucks unaffordable with poor reliability and unnecessarily expensive parts. The rotating assembly is fine, the emissions systems are garbage no matter the truck brand. Every brand buys the junk from the same manufacturers.

You definitely don’t want to buy a truck 350-450 thousand miles.

I’m not sure of the laws, haven’t driven since medical retirement due to fall off a dump trailer in wind while covering a load, breaking L4, herniating L5/6, with fusion and titanium bridge, since 2007. So I really have no idea, other than what goes in what hole. Automatic transmission must be nice in traffic, not so sure about open road. But it seams like a brand new Glider Kit, like a nice long nose Peterbilt. Then just assembly with all the best the law offers. The most power/economy mix, with the best ride/handling mix. As for power, how about the last good Cat, 3406? Built to perform a last reliability. Should be able to do? Especially with the price of a new truck with the new headache of emissions?

I’ve owned 11 trucks in my owner operator small company in total. 8 of those are 379s. Out of all of them I’ve had one emissions truck. A 2015 Kenworth with a Paccar. It was the newest lowest mileage, most expensive by far truck I’d ever bought. It was pretty good for about a year then it was emissions constantly and the final straw was i had just spent 8k to fix it 2 weeks later same thing. They said well we replaced all these parts so it must need an SCR. I fixed it and immediately sold it. F that truck and the stupid emissions. I’ll never own another one.

Keep on rebuilding them hundreds of times.
I remember the engines in tech school were so worn from being disassembled and reassembled, that we only went like 200 ft pounds on the mains instead of 250😂
They'd run....so any other engine shouldn't have a problem being rebuilt like 20 times

I didn’t get to listen to the broadcast yesterday, but I did leave a comment. I’ll repeat it here. The name of the high-rise ghetto is Cabrini with a B. Named in honor of the Catholic Nun, Sister Cabrini; she ministered to the poor. She also has a local street named in her honor. The high-rise ghetto has since been demolished. It is most famous, not only for its violent reputation, but for the city of Chicago‘s first chick Mayor, Calamity Jane Byrne. In order to prove something or other, she moved into Cabrini Green under the heavy guard and watchful eye of the infamous Chicago police department for a few days. A legendary fiasco in Chicago politics, which is world renowned for its many political fiascoes. Additionally, it was a blessing in disguise to not be able to get back to the Kennedy Expressway. that stretch of highway has left side entrance and exit ramps where are you have absolutely no view of the traffic coming up next to you, and even if you have the agility of a Ferrari, it is extremely difficult to merge into the high-speed lane of an eight lane wide section of freeway, particularly in a large truck. There is no acceleration lane at all whatsoever, just a long triangle that gets real thin really quick, Because there is another one at the next block! I think there are four or five of those entrance ramps in a row on the near Westside by Greektown

Come on I thought American was meant to be the best... How come Europe doesn't have a problem with clean trucks but you do?.. remember the problems you had with diesel car engines too. I've been driving diesel cars over here since the early 1990s without any problems. I'm not saying we are perfect, I'm just asking that with all your resources why can't USA do it better?.

The big line haul companies just buy new plastic trucks, run them only a few miles, and get rid of them. Most big trucks are now a disposable item. I don't know how they make any money that way.

I don't have any use for any truck that has Def or restrictions on the engine. Give me a mechanical engine and most times i can get it in for Repairs. Old school is the only way that i would drive a truck these days. If my truck breaks down it could be a cold wait before the tow truck gets here to get you in for repairs. Safe trucking drivers. 😊
