  • While my student Larry continues building his shamisen, let's take some time to learn the basics of throat singing and metal growls!
Forgive my lack of technical jargon!

After all this time I finally found it. I knew how to do the kargyraa but I had no idea how to turn it into growl. Thank you so much sir

I leaned a small bit of a false chord 2 years ago and taught my self all sorts of techniques and am the lead vocalist of my new metal band! But as a kid, I remember my teacher tried to teach us to throat sing, I wish I could go back and show her my gnarly lows now!
Although, my technique doesn’t require the tongue going back, in fact, curling the tongue up and down is a quick way for me to change the sound, and mine is also VERY loud. At my bands first gig, but the mic wasn’t working, luckily was a small enough area that my raw voice was plenty loud and maybe still out powering the instruments! The look on the peoples faces hearing live growls for the first time was beautiful!

That's super cool!!! Man, I've wanted to learn mid/high metal vocals for years, but despite a few metal vocalists showing me, it just never clicked. I still don't know what I'm missing! 😅Anyway, that's so cool you can do it, and I think it's awesome that you had a teacher who knew how to throat sing too!
Update after reading your second paragraph: Aaaah, that's super interesting. Yeah, pulling the tongue back sounds super low, but doesn't give lots of a lot of range for changing the sound (and I don't think is super loud either). Hmm.... I'm gonna have to try that out! 😀

@@TsugaruShamisen absolutely! I like trying to find different types of screams, the mid and high ones are always the hardest! I try to teach my friends all the time, some have gotten pretty good, others couldn’t control their airflow enough. Alternative forms of vocals take a lot of training to do right, but considering you can throat sing I’m sure you know that! I’m shocked how far I’ve advanced in music, I went from not being able to talk while playing 3 chord songs on guitar to being able to solo and pull off multiple different vocal style at once! If you’re looking to learn false chords there’s some really good TH-cam tutorial! Just be sure to perform them safely!

Listen to Whispered, they're a melodic death metal band that uses shamisen & other japanese instruments. There's also Tengger Cavalry, a Mongolian folk/melodic death metal band that throat sings.

Great video guys! Especially the final part :-) But I didn't get the part with tongue forward/backward to get kargyraa and growl. My growl is nowhere near as good as yours, but I know for sure that growl doesn't uses abducted vocal folds, while kargyraa does, so I guess that shifting between them is possible only if you know how to do them separately, what do you think? I tried the way you show in the video but I get another sound, not growl at all :-)
