    Just for the record, John o' Groats is the most northerly _town_ but is not the mostly northerly point of the British mainland. It's very close, but not quite - Dunnet Head, which _is_ the most northerly point, is about 11 miles northwest of John o' Groats. The northernmost point in the UK is Out Stack, Shetland, roughly 150 miles further north. When you were in John o' Groats you were north of Juneau, Alaska!

    The sad thing is you miss so much by sticking to a road. Shanks's pony (two feet) is the way to see the Highlands. You comment on the land's emptiness of people, but there's missing history there. The Clearances. Most of the population was EVICTED in the 18th and especially the 19 century, with great cruelty, to make way for sheep, which were more profitable or the fuedal landowners. It was the same in the Hebrides. It's where a big chunk of the population of Canada came from. Gaelic is still spoken in Cape Breton. A big chunk of the population of Glasgow, too, where the industrial revolution's misery and exploitation was suffered by dispossessed and evicted Highlanders and refugees from the famine in Ireland.
    Historically, as you passed from Caithness, from the flat Tundra of the Flow Country, the Causey Mire (Europe's biggest expanse of blanket bog), to the mountains of the North-west, you passed from Norse Scotland to Gaelic Scotland. Just look at the placenames! Many of those in Caithness could well be in Yorkshire! The islands you couldn't afford to sail to (the Orkneys with the Shetlands much further North) were once parts of Norway. As you come to the Gaelic placenames, however, you'd need a quick course in aspirated spelling to pronounce them (though some got Anglicised in the 19th century). Only 16 letters in the alphabet, so many sounds are represented by combinations of letters which look very odd if you don't know them.

    This reminds me of one of my favorite movies of all time is "Local Hero" with Burt Lancaster and Peter Riegert about a Texas oil company wanting to buy the town of Airsaig to put in an oil refinery. Lots of very subtle humor. I watch it about every year and it is so sweet and nuanced. Directed by Bill Forsyth, who did "Gregory's Girl" which featured Keira Knightly in her first role.

    While up there, have a look for the "Falls o' Shin", near Lairg. It's inland from the coast, but worth seeing, as you can see Salmon jumping up a smallish waterfall. And the reason the landscape is so empty - that's what the "highland clearances" did, where landowners burned families out of their crofts, stuck them in boats, and shipped them off to Canada and Australia. Its why these places have a big Scottish contingent.

      Can I ask why? I mean I know what happened and I agree it was deplorable, but it was what 150-200 years ago? A lot of bad stuff happened all over the place back then and there is not much we can do to change that. I think it's important we dont forget, but I also think it's important we dont wallow in the misery of history ...or keep old feuds burning just for the sake of it. There isnt anybody alive today that you can hold responsible.

    • @rodden1953
      @rodden1953 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
      Just look at what we have lost in just a short time like unions, The Tolpuddle Martyrs put their lives at risk for the right to form a union part of that was unfair rents and low pay. now its all come back , there are to many to list right now but that's a start

    • @Martyntd5
      @Martyntd5 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, but context changes. In 1830 I'd have been a unionist for sure, but the unions in the 1970's and 80's almost crushed Britain. I can remember the power cuts and the queues for bread. That's way too much power, the unions were really screwing with peoples lives. Nothing exists in a vacuum, the balance of power changes, context alters meaning and not everything from 200 years ago, is a metaphor for this world. The Highland clearances were bad, but I cant see any danger of a repeat. Haven't land ownership rules changed in Scotland? I thought I read about a whole Island of crofters clubbing together to buy their Island?

    Marram grass (Ammophila). The reason this part of Scotland (as well as the Highlands in general) is so empty is The Clearances. People were cleared off the land by the local aristocracy to make way (largely) for sheep. The worst offenders were the Duke of Sutherland and Queen Victoria.

    And yep, small country roads can be a bit mad here, a lot of them will be at the national speed limit which is 60 MPH on a single carriageway. My dad used to say that's not so much a speed limit as a dare ;).

    Shetland ponies are sturdy wee animals. Lots of them were used in the mining industry before mechanisation for pulling the loads of coal from the pit face and lived the majority of their lives down the pit never seeing daylight again. Was a harsh life for them but they were thought ideal because of their size. Now they are used as kids ponies.

      I am pretty sure that the North of Scotland is not native to the UK, it smashed into the British Isles landmass the same way as India did to the Asian landmass. Some geologists liken the mountainous area of North Scotland to the Himalayas, but say that due to the weather conditions in the UK they were never going to be as dramatic as Asia. I think that they found out that the rock that crashed into the British Isles is from the American mainland, but I am not sure which state(s).

      the mountains in Scotland aren't that tall but they are very dangerous. the reason why is that there is nothing between the Arctic and Scotland, those winds can be incredibly cold. it can be fine below but up on the mountains it can be full winter conditions. like the landscape the weather can change instantly.
      people misjudge the Scottish mountains ever year and die. 10 people died in first three months of this year alone. always respect them, youd be amazed at the people who go with shorts n tshirt.

      heres johnny ..and although they're not so tall now, they are actually far older than the Hymalayas and used to be around 15,000 feet before erosion and various ice-ages wore them down.

    You missed out on going over to the Islands (Orkney). Scapa Flow is the sea between the Islands, and used to be the base for the British North Atlantic Fleet (both wars). There is a museum, Italian chapel (Prisoners of War), Vikings, Iron Age ruins. lots of history.

Next time you think of coming to UK save up enough pennies so you can go to Orkney and Shetland they are both amazing places and the scenery will blow you away (much like the wind!). Enjoy your videos, wit and stories, keep up the great work!

    Welcome to Scotland. I cannot understand why you do not do some basic research on the georgraphy before you get somewhere. Not knowing about the existence of the Orkney and Shetland islands is surprising. Yes, the car ferry is expensive but you could go by passenger only and then cheap buses, plus smaller ferries to the minor islands of each group.

    • @kydeanderic
      @kydeanderic  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have no idea what gave you the impression we didn't know the Orkney and Shetland islands didn't exist as we talked about how we looked into going to them but found it too expensive, to which you then responded to. Anyways, as we had a car for hire we were paying daily to use leaving it behind is still an expensive option. -E

    Remote though the northern-most part of Scotland is, it was very busy once. The Orkney Islands are just above John O'Groats. They contain Scapa Flow, which was once the biggest naval base in Britain. At its height during WWI, it contained the Grand Fleet - which constituted over 400 warships, including 69 capital ships (massive battle ships), 200+ destroyers and other fast warships, 72 submarines and 3 aircraft carriers (in WWI!). It was big. In fact, it was grand.

      Your videos are just wonderful. I've enjoyed the "British Isles" ones (I teach a lot of international students so I was searching TH-cam videos about people's *real* view of the UK in 2019 so I could write some decent guidelines, and that's how I stumbled across your special TH-cam document. What a joy. There's a huge number of your earlier movies for me to check out too - your massive "back catalogue". But I will catch up - eventually.
      You two really are so lovely. If you ever come back to this British neck of the global woods some time in the future of your odyssey, do stop by Wales if you can. It's friendly, modest - but deep ;)

      We don't budget very much, we tend to just live and explore cheaply. Sometimes people in our video comments give us tips on things to do, sometimes we just google around for things, sometimes we just use google maps to see what's in areas. There isn't really a straight answer, to be honest. Glad you are enjoying! -E

      They get faster and faster just before closing time. Some are so fast you don't see them. With 60 miles to the next pub and fifteen minutes to the final bell they do about 120mph. With 10 minutes to go they are above 150mph. With under 5 minutes the wind moves as they pass and it's the only way to know someone passed. Now you know why there is no one outdoors in the country an hour before closing time and an hour before opening time. It's just not safe.
      Lol, This was written as a joke.

      That is a shame. Some places are so special they should never be touched, but I wouldn't single out Trump on this one. Golf courses have been springing up all over the place for years, and often by the seaside. St Andrews for example. That still, though has an amazing beach and coastline. Spent many a day in Fife, in my youth :)
