Hi Tom, on my Volvo ecr58d you can turn the machine off with the safety lever down then turn the key to accessory with the lever still down until it beeps and you see the display screen on, then wiggle the toggles on the joystick left to right and you will hear the pressure release. I often unhitch a grab while the lines are connected and do this so I relieve pressure in the attachment and machine then unhook the lines. See if your machine will do the same. Sometimes u gotta wiggle for 20 seconds or so to get all the pressure out

Tom as you know I have operated excavators in the past and yes I like it. Back in the day my hand slipped of the line and I badly sprained my thumb. It was nearly 2 weeks before I could lift a pint properly. I hope some one sees this and fits it to new build machines as standard. Thanks for sharing....

  • @inh415

Thought every farmer would know this - engine off. Ignition on. Wiggle 3rd service switch/rocker/peddle etc then you have no pressure in 3rd service lines. Some machines may have some kid of "Go" button that needs to be pushed after turning ignition on ( engine still off obvs)
Also never detach pipes under pressure or your attachment pips will be under pressure and you will need the spanner.
Unless your valves are bypassing pressure from other circuits, then you need to release pressure from all circuits.
Some machines like newholland skidsteers have a special manifold with the 3rd service connections all fitted into that have a way to realase pressure by pushing the whole connector in to the manifold before trying to connect / disconnect. Basicaly a fancy version of your valve

Spot on. Had episode, back in day when could not release pressure from attachment and got my plums ripped of by boss, by return to base with attachment that should not have been returned. He spent ages trying to remove hydraulic pipe, used everything in workshop to assist, he still could not remove. Still blamed me. Oh if only Tom had been around, or TH-cam, or even the tinterweb. Ahha also, the ones on the jcb, we had them on a Komatsu. We just had a bar in the cab, like a punch or something, and you just push on the top of the coupling to release the pressure and same with the other one, pull the collar down and push it in. Even one of the jaws on the adjustable wrench works, it's quick and easy!

Your idea worked, cant deny that. You seem to have a lot of fittings below the tap on the end of the arm. We have the coupling directly after the tap. To release pressure, i usually turn machine off, ignition back on with the levers in the live position, then work the buttons/pedal. Oh, and i leave the tap open to the couplers so the pressure can release from behind them.

Yep, your valve idea should work. I'd have a look around for a more compact valve, depending on the exact machine (WRT how the hydraulics are set up) and the types of attachments used maybe a momentary valve would be more suitable so you CAN'T leave the valve open and then wonder why your jackhammer isn't working 😏.
Thankfully most of our gear (at least the stuff I use) is old manual valves. Engine off, give the lever a wiggle and voila! No presure in the lines.
Weather here in my part of regional Australia has been low-mid 30s for since Sunday, today topped out at 27. Supposed to stay about the same until Monday when we return to the 30s. Assuming the BoM are reading the entrails correctly 🙄.

When you shut down the engine, turn the ignition back on, put up the red stick to make the hydraulics live again, and just move the sticks around, and foot controls for about 30 seconds, it'll take all the pressure out of the lines, or simply go on top the machine, to the hydraulic tank, and stand on the black rubber button, till you hear all the pressure has come out the system!
