    This is by far the simplest and best technique I’ve found on TH-cam. Thank you very much for sharing. I have an older manual machine and it works just as well. Stitch length 4/5 and width 1. So much easier.

    Thank you, Thank you,, Thank you :) I am doing a pettiskirt for my granddaughter and was sat here gathering by hand which was taking for ever. I typed in and saw your tutorial and thought I would give it a try even though my machine is not electronic, so flew down the stair changed all my machine settings and was amazed when it stared to ruffle my chiffon :) :) Thank you so much for this amazing tutorial you made me very happy and have saved me hours of hand ruffling :) What a star :) xx

    Nika, hope this finds you feeling better and life treating you well! I have caught myself several times wandering about how you are doing thru all this chemo. HUGS I understand since a few years back I to went thru several major intentional surgeries, going home with pumps, TPN being my food and nurses coming to my home. I'm sending PRAYERS and ONLY GOOD THOUGHTS for you and your family. ANYWAYS... I'm still trying to figure this skirt making out! I've got 3 granddaughters that are different sizes as I have told you in other comments. Ive spent hours looking and trying to figure out how much chiffon to EVEN ORDER and if I bought rolls,,,,,what size rolls do I need 3 inch 5 inch or 6 inch and how much to order per skirt,,,, OR how the heck I would even go about cutting chiffon out of yardage! LOL You truly are the easiest videos to understand here on YOU TUBE in my opinion. (BESIDES YOURS ARE SO BEAUTIFUL TO BOOT) LOL Nika I really do need help sweetie. You know there are 100's of videos on how to sew these skirts but not ONE on in depth before hand PREP! HOW MUCH CHIFFON FOR DIFFERENT SIZES OR A FORMULA ON HOW TO CALCULATE what you may need for different sizes. I'm sure I am not the only one out here wandering how much do I need to purchase to make a skirt for my 3 year old and say then say my five year old! lol I have no clue how many rolls and what sizes of chiffon are needed or the average amount you need for a different sizes like a 4, 5, 6, year old ...I have tried to figure out how I can EVEN CUT my own chiffon WITHOUT SEAMING IT TOGETHER so it's long enough to make all those ruffles. Nika I live in ALASKA and all the sites charge more shipping than it originally cost for the chiffon. If I lived back in Washington again I could as you do get free shipping! THEN IF AND WHEN I FIGURE OUT HOW TO CUT IT EASILY what size do I need to cut it in? A 2 in or 3 in and how much!!!! How did you cut yours in this video? Yours are JUST LOVELY. What size of chiffon rolls do you use for say this skirt? 3 inch for the ruffle at bottom then attach to five or 6 in? I don't even know many rolls to order if I HAPPEN TO FIND a sight that will ship to me in Alaska or shipping charges I can afford to purchase and how much I need? I don't mind cutting it but I am LOST!!!! Nika, I need you. heheeee Do you have a chart that tells you how much you need for for different ages? HOW DO YOU CUT YOUR OWN CHIFFON AND HOW MUCH? Nika if you feel good enough to help me I would so appreciate it. If not here is food for thought when you do feel better and decide to make another helpful video. It would be sooooo cool to find a video on how to calculate how much you need for different ages and what size such as 3 in or 5 in., what size needles, what kind of thread works best and explain how the tension works as far as ruffles and how to get them tight, loose etc. I get most of all that but as I have said its the chiffon sizes and how much. or how to cut my own Thanks again sweetie.BEST WISHES

      Thank you so much Ruthie. I actually have a plan to do a video. I wanted to do it last week but chemo had me feeling so bad. It’s actually the next video I plan on doing. In the video I can go over everything you are looking for as far as size, how to measure, thread and all things helpful. I for one had to learn a lot in my own so I love giving as much detail as possible. This upcoming week is not a chemo week for me so hopefully I can get it done early in the week and I will also explain how to make the skirt for different sizes. Thank you so much for your kindness and friendliness. TH-cam can be vicious sometimes and it’s so nice having someone like you support me.

    @Krissi Zitka when I sew on the ruffles I use a slightly tight straight stitch which can be hit or miss at times. The best thing to do is make sure when you start your stitch on the ruffles and assembly that you back stitch at the start so nothing unravels. I also make sure when I am sewing the pieces together to sew over the exact stitch that is on the ruffle strand. I hope this helps. If you like I can do a tutorial on how I make a tutu.

    Hello I started working on chiffon tutus a couple years ago and just love them! I ended buying every color from the same place you mentioned. But my problem is that once I put one on my granddaughter if she pulled at the ruffles it would go straight so I had to go over every ruffle 3 time so it wouldn't pull straight. How do you get them so they don't pull or how do you get them on tight? I've also used a straight stich and set my machine the same. But I must be doing something wrong:(

    • @Nikad1977

      You’re welcome, for this particular video I used long strips from a yard of fabric. However what I normally use are 2” rolls of 30 or 60 yards. I don’t always use the full rolls but it’s always good to have pre-made ruffles. The place I purchase my rolls from are listed in the description.

      Jaycen Cureton thank you, I normally pin where I want to put it and then see the middle to the garment. I made a heart shape on a short with it and also added it as sleeve trim and bottom trim to shirts. I hope that helps let me know if you have any other questions.

    I need to sew the center of 2" lace to satin ribbon to make a ruffle. I did a basting stitch and then gathered it but now I need to know how to keep my ruffles stable so that they'll stay intact and won't slip around the basting thread. This is part of a necklace I'm making and it really has me stumped. I tried running a straight stitch with my machine after it was gathered to help keep it in place but the lace kept getting jammed up under my feed plate. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

    • @Nikad1977
      @Nikad1977  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Janet Gernand hello, I would suggest if you are using the basting stitch method to make ruffles and then a straight stitch after is to put a piece of tape under your foot to keep slippery fabric like lace in place. I have made lace ruffles using the method I use in this video by setting the longest length and a tight tension and guide the lace through still putting the tape under the foot.
      Another way to keep the lace or satin from slipping is putting tissue paper on top of the fabric while stitching and when you are done you can just pull it off afterwards.

    Do you know you shrink factor? I'm debating making curtains like this for my daughter. The problem is that it's an 8 foot ceiling, and because of the drape I'm probably looking at 120 inch curtains to span an 11 foot room. So, say you're looking to get a 5 inch ruffle strip, what is your starting length. Does that make sense? I know it will vary depending on settings, but looking to figure if it will be reasonable enough for me to make these with the extra fabric I'd have to buy. Thanks in advance!

    • @Nikad1977
      @Nikad1977  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Katheryn Howat I actually do not know the shrink factor. I never really measured once I get the ruffles. However I do know I use 3 times as much as regular fabric when I make the ruffles. I hope that helps. If there is leftover I always save it for a project later on.

    • @Nikad1977
      @Nikad1977  ปีที่แล้ว

      Once you do the settings as suggested in the video the fabric will ruffle itself. I learned using the longest length with the tightest tension. However, I adjust the settings based on how tight or loose I want the ruffles. I hope this helps.

      If you are making a pettiskirt which is what I was using the ruffles for you want to use total 96 yards. Which is what I do because I need 2 48 yard pieces to add to the bottom of both sides of the skirt. Hi! I tired it on my brother fs100wt and it worked for my first 3 pieces, then my thread finished and I changed it with a new one, same thread and now the ruffles come out so tight and I don't now hope to make it work again. Same settings, same fabric(tulle) and same thread, I'm so frustrated that I don't know what to do to it because I love the first 3 pieces which look exactly the same as yours, but the rest are ugly. 😔😥 can you please help me? Thanks in advance!

    • @Nikad1977
      @Nikad1977  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      most of the time what could have happened is when you had to re-thread that something is too tight either the bottom bobbin or the top thread. One thing you can do is try to loosen up the tension. Or something else I do at times which is frustrating is to re-thread everything and use a scrap piece of fabric until I figure out why things changed. I hope this helps.

    • @Nikad1977
      @Nikad1977  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Litzy peposita I'm not certain what type of machine you have. However you should have your manual which will assist you with my explanation. Find the tension knob and set it to the tightest tension this should have numbers 1- 9, Then you want to set your length to the longest length. Most sewing machine have 0-5 length, and then set your wide to 1. As you make your ruffles you can adjust your setting to your liking however this is just an outline of what you can do. I do have a ruffler foot that I use now but when I was doing it manually I would set my tension anywhere from 7 1/2 -9 depending on how tight I would like my ruffles.

    How do you prevent it from fraying?

    • @Nikad1977
      @Nikad1977  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** This particular fabric doesn't fray. This is a 100% Nylon - 15 Denier. I purchase mine from afc-express.com and they sell it by the yard and in rolls. When I make the pettiskirts its usually easier for me to purchase the rolls.

    • @MakeUpByShirl
      @MakeUpByShirl 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nika Oh okay. Thanks for explaining. I'm getting ready to ruffle silk chiffon and I believe there's going to be a large amount of fraying and I'm trying to avoid it. What you've shown seems like an alternative. Thanks for sharing the info : )

    • @Nikad1977
      @Nikad1977  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** In order to keep fabric like silk chiffon not to fray. You can use a product called Fray Check or you can take a lighter or candle and slightly go along the frayed fabric to keep it from fraying.
