Amtrak Trains Speeding Through Irishtown Road Crossing

- After the NS 8102 and F-units were put away for the night at Strasburg, daylight was still shining bright, and what a better way to take advantage of the evening sun than heading over to the last high-speed crossing found on any of Amtrak's electrified lines. Trains travel up to 110 MPH on the Keystone Corridor, which is an off-shoot from Philadelphia to Harrisburg that breaks away from the Northeast Corridor, although, are probably doing between 80-90 MPH at the crossing, because it is between two sharp curves. However, the title is a bit facetious, because the opening clip is of a train making a station stop at Middletown, PA that I filmed last year on May 23, 2011. Figuring that this would be an appropriate place for the archived clip, plus a location not yet on my TH-cam channel, I placed it at the beginning of the video to create a nice relaxing start. Notice, as the train heads through ROY interlocking, the closest two tracks are of Amtrak, while the farthest third is the NS Royalton Branch. The Clear aspect on the Royalton Branch was for a 630 coal train that I caught later that evening...
Of course, now on May 31, 2012, as we were chasing the NS 956, as I pulled into Bird-in-Hand I has seconds to spare before both Pennsylvanian's came rushing through. They typically meet in this area, and this is about the closest I've seen them. I wasn't set up at the best angle, but it was still a nice meet.
Now, finally to Irishtown Road! (Ronks, PA or Gordonville, PA)
Anyway, as you may or may not know, Amtrak and the local township received money to build roads around Irishtown Road and to officially remove the crossing once the two roads are built. The two crossings in Mount Joy recently met their fate. You can see construction equipment sitting nearby, which has already begun flattening and clearing land to build the roads parallel to the tracks...one on the south side that will join up with Ronks Road in Ronks to the west, and another on the north side that will run to the east and join with Harvest Drive to Old Leacock Road in Gordonville. So, I hope you enjoy the scenes of some of the Keystone Service passing the crossing, and if it's on your list to visit, get there soon!
And, on my way out I knew the light would be killer at Bird-in-Hand for the final westbound that runs before dark. Of course, this would be the train running over 20 minutes late, and I lost the sun light, but whatever! Thanks for watching!!!

Absolutely! I really wish I was around with a camera for the E60's, E33 and E44, heck, Conrail ran solid diesel powered van trains along here for awhile!!!
They run back and forth between New York City, Philadelphia, and Harrisburg, so they have a locomotive on one end and a cab car on the other so they can switch seats and keep rolling without taking time to add or change positions of locomotives.

As of last week they were still open. I think the businesses that use the crossings have some leverage as to whether they stay open or not.

Yeah maybe the people from the mills and local businesses along there are trying to keep it open. I know that crossing saw a lot of traffic from local business, they will probably keep it open until the bridges are complete.

Yeah, this is the last high-speed crossing that I know of on Amtrak. I think NJT has a lot, but I wouldn't know to much about that.

I do not think he muted the railroad crossings. The crossings here do not ring bells when the barriers are down.

I didn't mute anything, the audio is unedited. The crossing bell automatically shuts off when the gates are in the down position. It was only a couple of years ago that they added that E-Bell to the one side.

It has always been electrified, but sometime in the early 2000's they swapped to diesels for a few years. I think this allowed them to redo the track and overhead electric to bring the Keystone Corridor up to a 110 MPH electric mainline.

Oh yes, I forget to mention! They are about hourly in each direction, that is, a westbound will run and you will wait another full hour for another westbound. However, eastbounds and westbounds are typically offset by about half-an-hour, so that eases the waiting period.

All locohaul. The Irish trains are all diesel multiple units these days (EMUs around Dublin; EMUs elsewhere). I don't think I've ever seen electric locohaul.

I believe the Eby Chiques Road grade crossing (east of Mount Joy) has not been closed yet. Carpenter road, a short distance west of Eby Chiques, has been closed. So for the time being there are still two grade crossings left.

Two questions from an Aussie rail geek -
1. The driving coach on the tail end of the AEM-7 hauled trains - is that a converted Metroliner or an Amfleet coach with cab added?
2. Any idea why passenger platforms over there are built at rail level instead of at or near coach floor level?

Your videos are astounding. I've been railfanning this area all my adult life. I was born and raised in Manheim and after the Navy worked in a Myerstown laboratory close to the Reading RR mainline which I've "fanned" since 1965. Many of your vids are in locations I often visit. Surprised we haven't crossed paths in Lebanon or Richland or Derry road. (Great parking lot with signal view at the flower shop.)

1. yes, those are converted Metroliner cars.
2. on rail lines that see freight trains with high/wide loads, platforms are kept low. Some stations are served by Superliner cars that have doors just above the rails. Some stations see trains with different levels. There are federal regulations that require level-boarding at all car doors, but stations can get a waiver. There are wheelchair lifts at stations to meet the level-boarding regulations.

I apologize for my error. I must have seen Carpenter Road during a temporary closing. I passed by there on Saturday, July 7, and it looked (from rte 230) like Carpenter was still an active crossing.
How many horsepower does such a electric locomotive have?
Megaspasstpräsentiert AEM-7 have 7,000 maximum horsepower and HHP-8 has 8,000 max horsepower. I don't exactly know how many horsepower the new ACS-64s have, but I assume somewhere between 7,000 and 10,000 horsepower.

We dont get electric Amtrak where I live. Just the diesels, which is fine since I really like the way they sound.

True, I do not know how it works in the USA, It is much different then what is am used to.
They only leave from one door at stations like this one. All the cars are connected so the conductor alerts passengers at which door they are to exit. In fact, it is illegal to have a station on a banked turn without a high platform, but since this one existed before that law was put into effect, it remains like this. In a few years it will be replaced and moved to another location.

There's nothing like electrified toast! I'm gonna miss those AEM-7's when they get phased out in the place of those ACS-64's, toasters truly are one of my favorite pieces of motive power out on the rails, my earliest fanning memories are of those 900-series units leading regionals up and down the Corridor here around home a longggg time ago, one can argue that they are the bug that bit me into this hobby in the first place.

Interesting video, I would only point out that, contrary to the title, the trains aren't speeding. They are going at authorized speed. Speeding on the railway gets one in trouble and ultimately fired.

The AEM7, Amtrak history, no diesel can match its speed.Northeast Corridor 125 MPH.
Siemens Chargers and EMD F125's can both do 125MPH, which is the max speed of the AEM7.
