  • Captured here is brand new tiller Ladder 4 of the Seattle Fire Department (SFD) responding from Fire Station 2 (Belltown) for a fire alarm activation, and 'drifting' around the street corner. In another clip Ladder 4 can be seen leaving the station and going 'on the air'. In the last clip Ladder 4 is seen returning to Station 2 after clearing a call. THANK YOU to the amazing firefighters of Seattle for your service!

    I realize that this 4 years old. I remember going to that station as a young kid. The neat KW they had back then. The guys were waxing the Engine. Another crew was mopping the bay floors. The LT. For Engine was proud of his Rig.
    Best station in Seattle my Humble opinion.

    This old timer thinks that is one beautiful piece of rolling stock. We didn't have a need for tiller ladder trucks in my suburban Chicago department back in the day. As far as I can remember, only Chicago had them, and very few at that.
    Really nice to see this impressive truck.

    I am retired from my FD now. My FD never a ladder that was this big, but I attended a number of apparatus operator classes. One of the classes included tiller. That is a no nonsense job. You need to be one step ahead of the engineer all the time. The tillerman in this video is the best I have ever seen.

    I worked in chassis engineering at Pierce up to 1994. I got to drive the tiller when we installed ABS on it. My 1st drive was in 12 noon traffic around a large local shopping mall, seemed really natural to drive the tiller. I even was able to accurately back it up on my 1st attempt. A fire chief from Boston at Pierce told me their fireman train for weeks to do what I did in 10 minutes.

    Seagrave at one time had a model called the Rear - Admiral that used front and rear steer and had super singles on the rear. Notice that the tractor section has a tandem axle set up for more stabil- ity when the ladder is raised on the trailer section.The Pierce Company also uses a lot of suspension tech from its parent co. Oshkosh.

    Career fire fighters reversing in to a fire station. Don't see that in Melbourne, Australia. Our career fire fighters wouldn't know how to reverse in to a fire station. They all have stations with drive through engine bays as they wanted it to be easy for them to get the trucks in the stations.

    What I never understood is, why you would need such a giant truck for a 100' ladder (I'm assuming that this thing is around 100'-110'). Here in germany we have 91' ladders whose wheelbase is half as long as those tillers. We even have 200' ladders whose wheelbase is maybe 2/3 of a tiller. Still impressive though!
    Edit: that's a typical 91 feet ladder in germany:
    www.feuerwehr-nortorf.de/fileadmin/_processed_/csm_HP_DLAK_23-12_GL_Nortorf_KLI_6825_604a8e8e9d.jpg

      It has more to do with the work assigned to the apparatus and the amount of equipment carried. The ladder or platform itself is the most visible aspect of the rig but only half the story. Each rig also carries an assortment of ground ladders and is a tool cache for rescue and salvage equipment. A ladder truck or elevating platform in most of the world is staffed with two Firefighters and is called to a scene primarily for elevated work. In the US a ladder truck is staffed with four to six Firefighters and is commonly called in for fire fighting, search, rescue, and/or salvage work. The ladder or platform itself may not be used at a scene but the crew, using other equipment carried on the rig, is busy doing something.

    • @lars7935
      @lars7935 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nol7034 The logic in many parts of the world is that: 1. you can't have these huge trucks and 2. you want to be able to remanouver the ladder independent from everything else.

    Hi I'm a Brit and we don't have these trucks over here they look rly cool question tho what are those medal things u showed at the start on the grill

    • @The5thChapter
      @The5thChapter 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Branches of our military. First badge on the grill is just a USA badge. The rest are army, navy, coastguard, air force and marine corps. Most Americans wether they have served or not take pride in our military.
