Great tip, Mark. I would be a little cautious about over-treating with ozone because polymers such as rubbers and plastics can be degraded by oxidative damage from ozone (and from UV exposure). These materials can become brittle. Still a good tip when it’s absolutely necessary.
Good info. I bought a really nice Marantz receiver a few years back that came from a smoker. I managed to clean it up and get all the brown nicotine off of it, but it still smelled horrible when it heated up. I got a brain flash and laid a new anti static dryer sheet underneath it, and the heat pulled the smell up through the case vents and masked the smell quite well. After a few months of doing that, the smell was gone and I no longer had to use dryer sheets. This method is much quicker.
Using a ozone generator and cleaning flat areas where dust and smoke settles while staying clear of components inside equipment and all covers makes for the best results for me. The cheap ozone gen does an excellent job. Thanks for the video !
Built my own 8 years ago, oil burner hv transformer, glass wine bottle with top and bottom cut off, #4 copper coil inside and out on each leg, but an open circuit.. added a timer and a sm pc fan... put in a plastic outdoor electric enclosure with nylon standoffs to keep the glass insulator stable and works amazingly well.. i built it to hide my nasty habit when i sold my car.. 24 hrs running on for 10min and off for 10 min worked fantastic... friend had a small flood in his basement, mosty dried out but musty.. put this beast in the problem room for 24 hrs.. gone..
Make sure you aren't working in the shade you do this and ventilate when you can. Ozone is highly reactive and can easily damage organic components of older systems like rubber, coatings and plastics as well.
Great idea. Once I bought a beautiful Sansui vintage amp. I had to sell it soon after it runs in my living room because of smell. I tested anto-odor car products, and even (I know, its controversial) washing with water and strong detergents including PCBs. The smell was reduced, but never gone. I miss the amp 😀
Hi, I'm a smoker, but I absolutely hate the smell of smoking, at home I only smoke on the terrace and at work I have a very strong fume exhaust - you can't smell anything, I don't smoke in the car. I once lent a curve tracer and a portable scopmeter to a friend in our electronics gang, he had it for three days and I then spent a week airing it out. Nice day 🙂 Tom
At the shop I used to work at we tried an ozone generator to try to kill the smokers stench. It did not do the job. However, we did not have a closed off area. Some of those TV sets stunk bad enough to gag a maggot. Being highly allergic to the smoke, and Epi-pens being over $300.00, I finally refused to work on smokers units.
An other and cheaper ozone generator is a plasma ball. I have one and don't use it a lot because of the ozone smell it creates after a few minutes. For smaller devices to de-smell, putting them with on plasma ball under an upside down plastic tub might work.

It wipes cig staining off almost instantly with very little effort. If you spray it on a wall in a room where smokers lived, you can see the stain melt away. I also use my Ozone gens if I do any cooking that leaves a heavy smell behind. Just turn it on before leaving and come home to no fish stank. lol 👍
I was going to say Ozone generator is best way without chems as you mentioned you have to touch the parts without an ozone gen. Cheers. Some vintage home versions work great and they last forever. I used to see them at thrift stores often , I still have never found an industrial version.

I'm on the fence on treating plastic parts in ozone because It also attacks plastics. I have used this method using a ozone generator designed to clean CPAP machines, but I've only treated metal parts & documents. I put things in a plastic trash bag & use the machines thin hose to fill up bag & set aside for 24 hrs. Works great on paper.
I think its the ultraviolet part of the CPAP cleaners that is so harsh on the plastics but I'm no expert there. I do use a CPAP but just use soap/water myself.
The Ozone generator is only needed for a very short period of time to be effective. I put the gear in the bathroom with the Ozone machine, set for 30 or 45 minutes, close the door and walk away. No harm to anything.

eesh you never noticed it growing up/?? That lingering smoke from ALL adults and siblings terrorized me.!! I would sleep at night with a pillow over my mouth or my face down into the pillow and always windows open fan going ect . This was before Hepa filters.
Yeah, i have to add myself to the list of people who would not like to have high concentration of ozone near electronic equipment. Plastics, rubbers and even metallic contacts can be damaged.
I'm glad you did this in an enclosed space. Prolonged exposure to ozone can raise issues with your lung tissues.

I use dryer sheets and place them in a large garbage bag with the equipment. The longer you leave it, the better the results.

I have a little ozone generator in my fridge, which I learned about from Big Clive.

Do not use Windex with ammonia on anything plastic. Ammonia and plastic are not friends. Cinch is a great cleaner that's a bit safer.
