The best thing about this song is that Mya made it her own despite the instantly recognizable sample. I'm a fan of hers as well as The Pharcyde so when she released this I was hype. Unfortunately the single underperformed, peaking at #51 on the Hot 100 and #35 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. To date it's Mya's last single to chart on the Hot 100, which is crazy to even fathom (20 years since?!).
The original sample is by Stan Getz and Luis Bonfa. It's called Saudade Vem Correndo. I'm not gonna front I looked that one up, but the DJs I listen to like playing the original song and then playing the Pharsyde.

The Princess of Dance Pop/Urban Dance Pop. Mya is grossly underrated and the music industry did her so wrong. Her legacy is sandwiched under the success of teenage Pop stars like Brandy, Aaliyah, Britney Spears, Usher, Justin Timberlake and NSYNC, Monica, Christina Agulera, etc. Mya had commercial success in the past (late 90s early 2000s). She has multiple top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, moderate successful albums. Additionally she has a Grammy with Lil Kim, Christina Agulera, Missy Elliott and Pink for Best Pop Collaboration for Lady Marmalade. She even received praised from Janet Jackson to do her tribute at the 2001 MTV awards with Aaliyah, Usher, Pink, Destiny Child, Britney Spears Justin Timberlake and NSYNC. Mya no longer is signed to a major label. She currently mentors people about veganism and teaches people how to dance especially in Asian countries. Mya is an underated legend. Allegedly Mya was supposed to be the "It" girl in Pop/Urban Pop and R&B after Aaliyah's death. But she no longer wanted to sell herself to the elites allegedly. As a result Beyonce and Alicia Keys career took off with global stardom.
I never heard of her, but she reminds me of Jodi Whatley...not so much the music, but her voice. 👍

You should revisit the cocteau twins man. "Ivo" "Beatrix" "Heaven or Las Vegas" "Wolf in the Breast" "Fifty-fifty Crown" all 11/10 songs, they bring a dreamy ethereal atmosphere
