    • @mdlee52
      @mdlee52  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Richard Cowtails Well, you can still buy those sizes and end up paying less than you would pay for the Carlyle set. I think that's one of the points I was trying to make it the video. Obviously they were trying to hit a certain price point for the set, and they had to sacrifice those sizes in order hit that mark.
      I spent less than half of what I would have spent at Napa.

    Just another Taiwan wrench. I’d buy the Carlyle first even though they are more expensive than other Taiwanese wrenches for one simple reason. There’s a Napa store on every corner and they have a no questions asked warranty. Since I work in an automotive repair shop I don’t even have to stop by their store. They’ll deliver a warranty replacement to my bay. That’s why the Carlyle tool line is priced higher than other Taiwan tools. You have the advantage of their vast store network to handle warranty issues instantly. If you’re just a DIY’er that probably won’t matter much but if you’re working on cars professionally it means you have the same advantages of buying from a tool truck at about half the cost.

      mdlee52 from doitbest.com (only place I found them all) it was $39 a set, added 5/16 to one set and 8mm to the other. Than 4 large sizes, which were all like 8-10 bucks a piece (16, 21, 15/16 and 1) so the individuals add up fast. But I would have spend like 450 on the wrights.

    I have a really old Williams Vulcan 6mm to 22mm set that I can't stand the idea of getting rid of because they're somewhat hard to find, but the open end isn't very good. I had been looking at the various wrenches with teeth on the open end (Snap On, Carlyle, Wright) but couldn't stomach paying that much money. Thanks to the video though, I think I've finally found a solution! Thanks, Man!

  • @stever5887
    @stever5887 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    mdlee--These are probably fine, but I would be concerned about the aggressive "flank drive plus" appearance. The teeth might chew up (mar) an otherwise still usable fastener, forcing you to replace one or more of them. I tend to use the closed end over the open end for this reason; however, you can't always fit the closed end on it owing to space restrictions. If it's a really stuck-on or corroded fastener you intended to replace anyway, no problem, but it may create difficulty while installing new fasteners; this is a problem with exposed chromed plumbing fixtures. In that respect, they act more like "turbo" (extractor) sockets than a standard combination wrench. As long as you're aware of this issue and can work around it (using a different style wrench or a socket), then no big deal.

    ChannelLock and Do It Best will ship to a local affiliated hardware store near you. There were several stores that were given to me as an option when I ordered them from DIB. I then went directly to ChL to see if there was a price difference and there wasn't, but they offered the same ship to store options. My order was fulfilled by a DIB in Ohio, so there is a network of hardware stores that carry them. I didn't check the local stores to see if the actually carry them as of yet, but I plan on doing so after the holiday.

    i use this set professionally on heavy equipment and they work great. solid wrenches for the price. i personally think snap on has the best wrenches (i dont own any but have used others) but i would say these are as good as matco or mac wrenches that i own. i havent scarred any bolt heads or nuts yet with the opened end. but they do grip and was a pain to get off because of the teeth if your in a rush. i can personally recommend them, but to each their own.

    Cara eu amo essas ferramentas na marca #CHANNELLOCK, aqui no Brasil elas são desconhecidas. Mas eu as conheço muito bem, tenho algumas amostras. Posiciono a marca CHANNELLOCK acima da KNIPEX e até mesmo da sua concorrente direta KLEIN TOOLS, ai nos Estados Unidos. Suas ferramentas são ergonômicas, muito bem acabadas, resistentes, práticas, mas o que são essas empunhaduras? Quanto conforto!!! Suas mãos se amolduram nisso ai, o torque é altíssimo só pela forma ergonômica de suas ferramentas. Estão de parabéns. Sem sombra de dúvidas a melhor ferramentas de todas que eu conheço; Uma pena que no meu país dominam apenas as marcas chinesas de péssima qualidade. Boa sorte para vocês que tem a oportunidade de comprar essas ferramentas na esquina de casa. Eu, porém, tenho que importar e pagar mais que o dobro para poder ter essas "azuis" lindas.

    Well,it seems that Channelock is going the way of all other spanner makers which is just to import products with their brand stamped onto them from one big company in Taiwan called Rotar Industrial ltd. Check their website,they make spanners under their own brand TOPTUL,and contract make for just about everybody else...Our local brands are Sidchrome,Repco,T.T.I ,ToolPro,all tools are identical only the names (and marketed price) are different..The Sidchrome ones have that open end anti slip jaw ...quality seems to very good,and is ISO 9002 etc..chrome plating seems extra durable,but then I,unlike others,treat my tools well...I would like to point out something regarding mechanic tools and their manufacture and use..Tools arent tested or xrayed individually,and as such metallurgical faults can occurr,especially when you consider the volumes of tools produced. There have been many people complaining about tools failing..I think a lot of this is due to people misusing tools.One should use tools correctly,as we were taught at Trade Schools,not forcing them beyond the limits of their design..properly used even very cheap tools will last..

    I have never broken an opened end wrench but I have definitely seen cheaper wrenches stretch and go around the nut or bolt. That really sucks. That is why I bought the SnapOn set.
    You said some open ends are too thick. Here are some wrench specifications here.... www.snapon.cz/wp-content/uploads/catalogue/klice2.pdf
    I am wondering if the quality of the metal is any different the in the manufacturing process between the Channellock and the Carlyle?
    Have you tried the drop-test between the two brands and can hear the difference in the "ping" when it hits the ground? You'll definitely here the difference between the SnapOn and any other wrench but what about the Carlyle and Channellock?
    Can you do a drop test and post it in the comment section as you do have the wrenches?

    The two wrench sets appear to be the same, but clearly came from different production runs, evidenced by the stamped name. Is it possible that better steel was used, better quality control, to justify the higher price of NAPA's brand? Or are they truly the same?

    • @mdlee52
      @mdlee52  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So here's the deal: I don't upload any videos of me working on my car because I am just a DIY'er.
      You and Knocks have some expertise in the field, and I view you both as being qualified to post videos on automotive repair subjects. I am not qualified to do that, at least in my own estimation.
      The contacts on the starter of my Camry were getting worn. The car is twenty years old with 186k miles and the starter is original. I order a $13 kit from Amazon and pulled the starter, rebuilt and reinstalled it last week. It took me about an hour. That's the kind of thing I do, just work on my own car or maybe family member cars. Maybe I should consider filming some of that, but the I would hate to post a video and give someone else incorrect instruction. Can you dig it?

    • @rustybrowneye

      mdlee52 i dig....and ive never had a job in the automotive field. I to am a diy Just with alot of tools and equipment. Because iv never worked in a auto shop it made it difficult to meet the requirements to get my ase cert. But i found a away around it

    • @mdlee52
      @mdlee52  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you support yourself financially by working on cars, you are a professional. I understand there is a larger conversation to be had there, but that is my basic thought.
      When I worked as a carpenter and general contractor, I never had any formal apprenticeship or trade school background. But I was a professional.

      Long Pattern. I think the regular pattern Carlyles do not have the traction grooves on the open end. The Channellocks are definitely long pattern wrenches.

    • @MitchellSmith
      @MitchellSmith 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So the day I posted this reply, before your response, I picked up both the metric and sae Carlyle sets for about $85 a piece. Even after knowing about this deal, I couldn't bring myself to return them and buy the channellocks. I guess I'm brandist! haha

    • @mdlee52
      @mdlee52  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mark Fox I'm not sure all of those sizes offer the traction grooves, Mark. I will try to check next week when I visit the hardware store.

    • @mdlee52
      @mdlee52  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It appears the largest wrench size Channellock offers with the traction grooves on the open end is 32 mm.
      www.channellockproducts.com/products/303000
      This is also true of the Carlyle.
      www.carlyletools.com/products/wrenches/long-panel
      So as far as the long pattern, traction grooved open-end wrenches from Infar Inc. are concerned, 32 mm is the largest size offering.

    • @MarkFox
      @MarkFox 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is the same as Carlyle then. Carlyle does offer wrenches up to 50mm but nothing 33mm and above feature the anti-slip design. Now some body that owns both the Cahnnellock & Carlyle need to compare them side by side to see if they are the same length & width.
