  • Hello friends!
And welcome back to my channel, today I want to talk about how to hold your reins for a softer hand.
Does your instructor say you pull too much?
    To soften your hand?
Have more of an elastic contact?
    Give to your horse?
Time to use the driving hold on the rein to improve your elastic contact and create softness through your arm and hand.
Shown in the video you want to flip your hand over on the reins to that your thumb points down the end of the rein toward the bit instead of towards the buckle.
The way it works is it softens your wrist and forearm and makes it much harder to pull and brace against the reins.
This is also helpful in developing an automatic release over fences as well. Use this tip at the walk, trot, canter, and over fences!
    Worry Less and Ride More!

When I was learning to be a dressage rider I was not allowed to hold the reins for six months, we were never let off the lunge until we learned how to ride and establish a proper seat!

Being lunged is a great way to improve your riding!I bet your hands and seat are 💯💯 I think the spanish riding school makes everyone stay on the lunge for quite some time as well. Thanks for commenting!

I really liked your lead-in. Very catchy.

I have a neck issue i’m currently working through that tenses up my shoulder/upper back muscles, which leads to my arms being super stiff. Combined with a tendency to pull on the reins (unfortunately how I was originally taught to stop for years), I struggle with following/giving through my arms and hands. The driving rein is a great idea- i'm definitely going to try it out with my boy tomorrow, thank you!

I agree! With this method it does make the hand easier to follow the movement. Thank you!
