    I appreciate you guy's enthusiasm, but there are so many incorrect statements in this video that I wouldn't know where to start.

      +TheAgeOfAnalog Thanks for the feedback! We're working on our accuracy and research with each video. This definitely has many mistakes, but hopefully this was improved in our MJU2 video and will continue to improve with time. 😊

    Enjoyed the video except for one thing - both of you confused 'rangefinder' for 'viewfinder'. Rangefinder is a very specific term and does not apply to either the Trip or the XA2; had you been talking about the original XA or the Olympus RC, then the term would have been appropriate.

    Sorry to harp on, but no film camera has dynamic range. That is decided by the film and the film processing.
    Keep up supporting film.

      +Austin Beeman Absolutely correct, we'll definitely try to get our facts right in our upcoming videos. So stick around 😊

      To get better DR simply pull the film by lowering the ISO on the front ring of the Oly35 2 stops (or halve the ISO say from 400 to 200), works really well with the higher speed films so you get some detail in the shadows or when the sun is coming from behind the subject.

    TRIP 35 is the best-in-class. Trust me it shoots better photographs than the ones this video shows us. Don't mean to demean you but it's not there. What film are you using?

    • @DecaffeinatedPhotography
      @DecaffeinatedPhotography  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We used Fuji Superia 400. Don't worry, we've also gotten some pretty nice photos with it. It's all down to personal preference :)

    Upon exposure to the yellow sun of our solar system, the Trip 35 gains the ability to command its will.
    This isn't a camera, it's superman

    Not sure if your aware with the trip but it has the focus scale on the underneath of the lens which for me at least is much easier to read than the simple diagrams on top, also makes it much easier to zone focus when you actually know the distance. Also as I'm sure it's been mentioned the aperture settings on the trip are for Flash as it's a point and shoot camera other than that :) My trip 35 produces much better colours and contrast than these examples as I shot them in the A mode which is what it's designed to be shot with unless attaching a flash of course. Nice video.

    I have 3 Trips and you can use them in Manual, 1/40th and whatever aperture is required by the use
    of a hand held meter. A low speed film of not more that 100 asa is best because of the slow shutter speed.

    I love how the TRIP 35 guy keeps trying to convince himself his camera is better lol

  • @TheFulcrum2010
    @TheFulcrum2010 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Erm guys, the lens front of the trip isn't where the camera gets its power from. It's a light meter. The XA2 hasn't got a rangefinder view finder. It's just a uncluttered view finder. You set the distance on the switch on the side of the lens to infinity ,mountain image, and anything from around 3ft to infinity should be in foucus.
    The trip Works in a similar fashion.

    I have a Trip 35, and mainly because of the stepping focus I decided to only use it for more "static" scenes, like nature or city scapes. While people shots perhaps more occasionally. And also keep them a little more "fancy", so I would use a slightly more expensive film and also sticking to black and white. - And then I have an Mju-1 that I use as a camera I can just put in a pocket and use with a cheaper color film for very casual shots. - So the point being, the former is a more "careful" shooter, and the latter a bit quicker (also having auto focus).

  • @AustinBeeman
    @AustinBeeman 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I love that you are showing these cameras some respect. And why would either of these cameras have any color difference? The same film, same subject, and same processing/scanning should give the same image.

  • @jameswilliamsfilms4229
    @jameswilliamsfilms4229 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    You need to get your hands on the original XA, It has Rangefinder (although I mainly do zone focusing) and plenty of manual control, with little tricks such as using battery check for bulb mode. The trip is more attractive but doesn't really fit into your pocket unless you've got a big jacket so it's not a go anywhere camera, and has limited features, with a bit of searching you can get your hands on an Olympus RC for a similar price and superior features. The stylus epic is alright if you like full auto, but has the annoying flash. I'd love a Contax t2/3 but a bit too steep in price for me at the moment.

    XA2 is a lot more sophisticated than a Trip 35. A fair battle would be an XA-1 vs a Trip 35. An XA-1 is basically a Trip 35 in an XA body. From someone who repaired these for 25 years!

    nice work guys..You got a new subscriber 👍 but you need to research a bit more about rangefinders vs zone focusing... and that thing on the olympus trip around the lens is a selenium meter and has nothing to do with powering the camera not the solar energy.. keep on 🤙

  • @robertknight4672
    @robertknight4672 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The light meter on the Olympus trip is a selenium cell. A lot of vintage off camera light meters use that technology back in the day.

    Have some trigger, I mean shutter, discipline! The super sensitive shutter on the XA makes it super easy to take steady shots at slow shutter speeds.

    I've been researching quite a bit on both of these cameras prior to watching this video and yet, I still had no problem getting through the whole 11m, uninterrupted & without skipping. That said, Alex won me over; sorry, Josh. Great editing, well thought out reviews, a bit of humor, and you picked some great spots to shoot. Job well done, fellas, you've earned my subscription.

    Both very good cameras with sharp lenses.
    The trip is slightly better as there are no batteries to worry about.and it's not so fiddly plus the shutter button is better.
    I have had an Olympus trip for over 35 years and still take it out occasionally instead of my canon ds1 and lenses.

  • @disarmsox
    @disarmsox 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Surely it's the film that dictates the colours more than anything else. It's not digital, it's not a sensor. Both cameras are good and a decent photographer will work within the limitations of both.

    • @Clarimort
      @Clarimort 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, the lense also plays a part in how the colors and contrasts look.

  • @PaulJamesMuldoonGYST
    @PaulJamesMuldoonGYST 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    The trip doesn't have manual control.
    The f stops are for flash only. it always fires at 1/200th unless the flash is firing.
    LR44 batteries are available from any supermarket. I have an XA3 and a Trip 35
    The XA wins hands down.

    • @DecaffeinatedPhotography
      @DecaffeinatedPhotography  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're right, thanks for that, will do a little bit more research on our next one, but the aperture ring is still something that the XA 2 lacks. We've put a disclaimer in the description :)

      Actually Paul, when in low light, when the flag is up, you can dial in f2.8 without a flash and get some great low light shots... so kinda manual.

      The Trip will drop down to its lower shutter speed (1/40th) as the light levels drop.

  • @jonvincentmusic

    I have two Trips: a later model, slightly battered with the black plastic shutter button like yours, and a really early one from '68 with a silver button and factory mint. Despite the fact there were no documented changes to the camera's lens over the years, the later model produces the same kind of wishy-washy images seen here, while my earlier model produces images with a contrast and colour not far behind that of my Olympus OM's F/1.8. Strange why there should be differences, I have wondered if the lens in the later camera needs cleaning? Thanks for sharing the video. Cute model BTW (are we allowed to say that in 2017)

    • @DecaffeinatedPhotography

    People make way too much about the sensitive shutter button on the XAs. I've shot dozens of rolls through mine and I've maybe taken 3-4 accidental frames. Also, because it takes so little pressure to activate, I've shot many sharp photos at speeds as low as 1/8 - 1/15 sec.

    I own 2 XA2s, and maybe here in IL I'm lucky but everywhere that has batteries has exact ones you need. Energizer 303/357 is equivalent in size and output to the LR44 originally used in these cameras.

    The Olympus Trip 35 is a fine camera with very simple engineering it's not as sturdy a shutter mechanism it can break
    But I've never heard of that happening?
    It's not a rangefinder it's a
    viewfinder principle but it's zone focus system ; lightness and total lack of dependence on battery for operation puts it one advantage above the X2 in that respect.
    Both deliver sharp images

  • @RawrDinosaurzz

    You should do trip 35 vs XA1 since mechanically they are pretty much the same

  • @michaelangeloh.5383
    @michaelangeloh.5383 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    What about the XA2 versus something like the Mju-1, though?... Would be a much more logical comparison, as they're in a similar lineage of cameras. But then, I think it's safe to say the Mju-1 is a better version of the XA2. - Might have been by the same designer as well...

    You can not use the Trip 35 in manual. The f stops are for flash only.

    • @michaelangeloh.5383
      @michaelangeloh.5383 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can still use them, though... It will just default the shutter to a 40th I believe. - You can also use it to override the Auto-mode that way in case it decides there's too little light and blocks the shutter.

    XA2 really? The Olympus XA beats the trip 35 hands down... the XA is one of the best compact film cameras ever made...

  • @Smaug1
    @Smaug1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    2:40 Jason does not know that a soft touch shutter release = less camera shake = sharper photos. Sorry, you lose Jason. Should've gone to the faster lens instead.
    5:30 Some manual control = Point to Jason / Trip 35. Colors have more to do with the film and lighting at that moment than the lens/camera. Moot point.
    5:43 Why is this bonehead not using the wrist strap? Either use it or remove it. No need to have it dangling, waiting to catch on something.
    6:35 LR44/SR44/A76 batteries are quite easy to find, in any store that has button batteries. On the other hand a CdS meter, (which requires a batt.) works in lower light and they tend to hold up better over time, as long as you don't let batteries leak in the camera.
    9:40 Point Jason. Manual or auto exposure easily trumps a proprietary flash. Also, if the flash is dropped and broken, there are many options for the Trip 35; not so for the XA2.
    Lastly, did you REALLY just happen upon Dannie? She's a pretty girl and for her to just wander off with two strangers is ... questionable.
