It has been 2 years since you posted this, so I'm late to the party. I have tried numerous methods of eco-dyeing and your method has given me the best results yet. Our local store only had ferrous sulfate iron so I went with what was available. I crushed the pill and dissolved it in my water. I got my best results by soaking my watercolor paper for 20 to 25 minutes in the solution. I steamed for 26 minutes. Once I could touch my bundle, I pressed with my hands all around the bundle and flipped it and did the same on the other side and then just left it alone for 30 minutes or so. I definitely did a huge happy dance when I cut my bundle open. I wish I could attach photos so I could share what you helped me achieve. Thank you!

@@katherinealpers5197 oh I am so happy to hear this!!! Seriously, you just made my day. I make so many videos, but I really have no idea if anyone really tries my ideas. It’s so gratifying when I hear that someone has tried my techniques and really loved the outcome. Thank you so very much for reaching out and sharing! ❤️ Denise

I watched a video and the artist added “ iron capsules “ from the drug store that you use for a health supplement!
      2 capsules in the water!

I love your paper; you are seriously talented! Your presentation is pleasant as well. I've been echo printing for about seven years using a few methods and after watching many how-to videos. Your method is one of the best; these prints are beautiful. I wish I'd have discovered your channel sooner; I'm now a subscriber. Thanks for sharing your technique. I look forward to using your method as well as seeing more of your work. Happy autumn!

These are so beautiful Denise. Nothing in flower here in Scotland though so I might have to buy myself a bunch of flowers.

Truly gorgeous results! Thank you so much for sharing! I especially love your use of iron tablets - great idea - and your efforts to only use things that are safe for human consumption so that you don’t need another set of utensils should be applauded. I have a few other comments. In regard to using iron of any description in things you also cook with, you still need to be careful! It is possible to overdose on (and people can die from) iron ingestion. Yes, we definitely do need some in our diet, but there is a limit. So you need to be mindful of how much iron you are putting into the pot and how often you are doing it. The second thing is that iron particles tend to stick around in vessels in which it is put for the purposes of dyeing - that is the reason that some dyers will have one vessel that they keep separate from others, in which they do any iron mordanting, dipping etc. . It only takes a tiny amount of iron to darken/sadden/blacken/grey another colour. In fact, I think that the reason why one of your bundles is darker is probably more related to the fact that the bundle was given a second soaking in your iron bath prior to steaming, rather than the length of time it was steamed … but I could be incorrect. Anyway, I just thought I would add those cautionary comments …

I'm with you on the 'traditional' equipment and time put into eco-dyeing. Doesn't seem very 'eco' to me to boil rusty bits and then let the boiled bits sit for three weeks. I try to stay AWAY from rust, not embed it in my paper! Great result using the iron capsules!

I really enjoyed watching your video! Would it be possible to list the steps in your process? I saved your video and I’ll be watching again. I live in Missouri and we don’t have anything blooming right now but this summer I’ll have lots of Zinnias I land other plants to use. I’m so looking forward to trying this. Your prints are absolutely beautiful! I’m making journals right now and I can’t wait to try this! Thank you for sharing!

Is it possibly to use fixative at the end to make the colours last longer if Exposed for sunlight?

One video I watched said 2 hours! I cut it down to 30 minutes. Next time I’ll try steaming it. I didn’t use iron but dark tea. 👍👍 I used the last of flowers

THANK YOU 🙏🏽 for the IRON PILL 💊 idea!!! I wanted the rusty nails’ result, but apprehensive of using rusty items, tetanus can be deadly. Thank you 😊
