A music that surpasses this masterpiece which beautifully depicts Scheherazade, has not appeared even today.

Hands down the best performance of this I ever hope to hear. There are many excellent performances and recordings of this masterpiece, but Bernstein is just magnificent.

Isaac Stern, the violinist, in a comment when Leonard Bernstein passed away, said that Bernstein had a talent of breathing new life into every music score he touched.
I have heard this symphony hundreds of times before, but I will have to agree: Bernstein's conducting has breathed new life into this score.

I've listened to this album since I was 6, and I'm still convinced that Bernstein's version is the purest version of Rimski-Korsakov's . The introductory statement is taken at a slower, more impressive tempo, and the entire thing lasts 45 minutes, not a half-hour as some versions do. The full melodic and harmonic force of the piece is brought to life under Bernstein's visionary conducting, which is brilliant by any standard. Toscanini was okay with this piece, but he had little patience for audience favorites. This is true to the Russian heart - slow, deliberate, and exquisite. So sad, so tense, so beautiful, such flow. This is one incredible piece of art.

Among the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard in my lifetime. I've loved it since I was a child and my mother played it for me from a set of RCA Victor 45 rpm records as an introduction to classical music. I have numerous copies by different conductors, but Bernstein's is my favorite, followed by Reiner, Spano, Ozawa and others.

I have also loved Bernstein all my life. I was first made aware of his talent as a child when a family friend played her 78 rpm records.

On the 16th of February 1959 Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic recorded a Scheherazade for the ages.

The high note at the end--what can I say to describe it. Does anyone know who that soloist was? This was 1959.
