Eric, I enjoyed the entire bonanza. My favorites were the Polar Express Berkshire and the Pere Marquette 1225. I own a Lionel LionChief Polar Express set from 2013. I wanted to review it before Christmas, but other things caused me to put that on the back burner. I also own an HO scale model of Pere Marquette 1225 from Bachmann. The reason I got my HO 1225 is because I got to see the real Pere Marquette 1225 twice. I’m not sure if I ever mentioned this before, but you’re my inspiration for doing product reviews on my model trains. For that, I want to say “Thank you, Eric”.
Hey Eric my favorite Steam engine is the 3 truck Shay locomotive and that's because I live in Canton North Carolina where the old logging railroad used to run up to Sunburst in the late 18Hundreds to the late 1920's or late 1930's

I went to Cass and that was the locomotive that took me up the mountan. It is a BIG locomotive, and is the worlds largest shay locomotive.
There is one kind of rare shay locomotive that is rarely known. The 4 truck shay. I don't know if anyone knows yet, but its a rare engine.

Got an atlas unlettered 2-truck shay. I use it for yard service and it’s the only steam locomotive that doesn’t horizontal drive rods.

Wm number 6 was at the b&o railroad museum in baltimore for a while, but the cass scenic railroad traded an older shay that was not operational ( cass railroad #1) for it and now it runs on the cass scenic railroad in west Virginia.

Hey Look for some of the less expensive types to get started. Williams and Weaver and even MTH has some really cool stuff. Not as many "Bells and Whistles" but a good way to start! Good Luck!

The steepest grade at Cass is 11%. (Third steepest railroad in the world.) There are two switch backs before the 11%. They tried to take a diesel up the mountain and didn't make it to the first switch back.
You probably didn't realize that you got your information a tad bit wrong because they send the diesel locomotives they use on passenger trains out of Elkins WV to Cass for any repairs and inspections and they run them down and up the mountain under their own power and there's a few videos on here of them and a cab ride in the WM BL-2 from the Cass shops to Spruce under its own power after it was repainted back into the WM Fireball paint scheme. Please don't think I'm trying to be mean or something like that because I'm not. I just wish everyone would do a little more fact checking because other people out there will start taking incorrect information that's out there and before you know it they will be rewriting the bible because someone somewhere pulled out a sharpie and wrote on the wall of a bathroom stall that Trump killed baby jesus and then someone took a picture of it and posted it online and before you know it everyone thinks moses carved it in stone and blah blah blah they have taken the wrong information and turned it into the gospel lol

Has anyone ever mentioned to you how much sharper and in-focus all areas of the video would be if you set your camera to record in aperture (Av) mode instead of automatic? If you set your camera to somewhere around f.8 aperture value (depending on your model of camera), the background will be in sharp focus just like the center of the foreground.

ericstrains What really lead me from purchasing this locomotive in O scale first hand was the lack of Cass Scenic Railroad excursion cars used currently by the beautiful state of West Virginia my home state.
If Lionel ever releases them to go along with this Shay and others like it I buy it in o scale as well however I’ll stick to HO since Bachmann has done exactly that but if Lionel does come out with those cars I would love to see you do a review of those cars pulled by that same locomotive.
You know, Cass custom built those cars from flat cars if you have some old flatcars you could scratch build the excursion cars

I’m honestly curious, does the flywheel link to both trucks on the engine like a diesel model would or does it power one and the crankshaft gets the other?
I have one of these, and to my knowledge, the motor powers the crankshaft behind the pistons, and its just geared to all 3 trucks.
Train Chamber that’s pretty neat, I might go look up a diagram for this model though just to see for myself
@@blackstone1a The motor and flywheel are geared through a series of idler gears at the crank, behind the steam chests, and the drive shaft along the WHOLE engine powers ALL the axles. So its powered with an electric motor nd gear driven just like the REAL THING! I have one of these from the early 1990's and the thing would pull ya house!
Will Lionel ever get the RailSounds correct for a Shay locomotive? I hate hearing rod engine sounds coming from a model of a geared locomotive! Anyone who has ever ridden behind a Shay locomotive , or has seen one operating under steam, knows what they sound like. It should be easy enough for someone to make recordings at Cass Scenic Railway to get all of the Two- and Three-Truck Shay sounds that would be needed. I hope the people at Lionel will correct this obvious error someday soon.
