How to make Probiotics for you and your pet

  • This video will show you how to take salt, water, vegetables and turn them into probiotics that are great for gut health.
    4 cups water for every 1 tbsp sea salt, add vegetable and allow to sit on counter for 5 days. Not only is it great for you but it's great for your dog too. Caution, only use those vegetables that are safe and recommended for your pet!
    I used Dr. Judy Morgan's book on Nutrition for dogs as my source for reference and recommendations.

    What a smart idea about the ziplock water trick! I’d ideally not want it touching plastic but that works better than nothing!

    I boil river stones( smooth and round) to hold the veggies down in the brine.. and use easy fermenter lids.. I had t thought of fermenting for my animals though.. thank you!!!

      Ha ha. I know what you mean. It’s really simple to make , you just make sure the vegetables are submerged and you open the lid daily. Like all things, once you make it a few times you’ll be a pro at it. I make these all the time, chester gets it with every meal, it’s easy peasy now. Thanks for watching!

    I thank you for your explanation. In Brasil we have a multitude of vegetables and legumes. The country wastes almost three-quarters of its production, which is immense. I take advantage of everything that street markets and supermarkets dispense. These are foods that are still in perfect condition with small defects that can be used. Does this method you use work for any food?

      Hello Brasil! I have family there too. I understand and agree with not wasting food. Yes, you can ferment most vegetables and get a tasty healthy results. The texture and flavour of vegetables varies but it’s fun to experiment. This method preserves the food but it must be refrigerated after it finishes fermenting to stop the fermentation process. You can also use fruit scraps , peels etc.,to make delicious vinegars that are probiotic too. I make apple cider vinegar which is delicious. I’ve also used guava peels mixed in and it gave it a very interesting and floral flavour. I have a video on making apple cider vinegar. Enjoy fermenting and thanks for watching.

      Hi there. You must refrigerate to stop the fermentation. If you leave it at room temp it will continue to ferment. You may not like the taste, it gets tangier and sometimes skunky flavour. I hope this helps. Thinks for watching.

      Hi there. I think you need different starter. I make yogurt too but I start it with a couple of tablespoons of store bought natural yogurt , the little single servings. I have a video on that too. Thanks for watching.

      The real fermentation should be done without any of water ,just natural occurrence of veg. juices.Day to ferment must be from 7 to 10.
      Taste should almost eliminated salt and become pleasant sour.
      Cheers.

    this is so interesting, I hadn't seen anything like this before. My dog has inflammatory bowel disease and she seems to react with bought probiotics, I wonder whether this will help her?

      I have a holistic veterinarian. She recommended I add this to my dogs food, 1 tbsp per meal, for general good gut health. I feed him home cooked meals. I also give him store bought probiotics.

      Hi there. I just take this for general gut health. Chester does too. It aids digestion. Depending on the cause of your nausea, green tea with fresh ginger always calms my stomach. The ginger is great for nausea. Also. (green tea with brown rice) seems to be more soothing than other green teas. Hope this helps a little. Thanks for watching.

    Do the vegetables have to stay separate in their own jars or cak you mix vegetables?

      Yes, you can mix the vegetables if you like. However, i find the peppers ferment faster than the carrots because they are more tender a vegetable. The cabbage can take longer than both. It depends on how small you chop the vegetables and your preference in taste and texture. I find the vegetables taste tangy when they are done. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

      I’ve never used rock salt. I would imagine you can , if you ground it up , measured the amount, and dissolved it first. I’m just about to make a fresh batch too. Thanks for watching.

      I used sea salt , it’s not that much when you consider it’s diluted in the water . The salt helps create the good bacteria in the fermentation process The food doesn’t become salty but rather tangy. This was recommended by my vet for my dog. However, I would double check with your vet on feeding your pet these veggies to be certain it’s right for your pet. Hope this helps, Thanks for watching

      Hello. It’s the same process of fermentation but using hot peppers. They will need to ferment for 1 to 2 weeks depending on flavour or tang you like. Strain peppers after fermentation and reserve some brine. Purée peppers and add brine to create desired thickness. There are many variations considering all the different peppers and heat levels. You can also add spices and vinegar to hot sauce for personalized taste preferences. You will need to keep it in the fridge to stop fermentation and you may have to release air from time to time. You can also heat it to stop fermentation but then you are killing the good bacteria. I’m still experimenting with different peppers and flavours. Hope this helps and thanks for watching.

    Plastic bag is bag for you, because the micro plastics going to be ingested in your system.
    Why not use the vegetable itself to seal the jar?Cheers, thanks for sharing.😀

      You’re right. Glass is better. The vegetables must be submerged in the salt water , as not to create mold. A glass weight , that fits in your jar, works great too. Thanks for watching.

      Your friend is right. The fermentation process goes through various stages and with time it turns into vinegar. It’s really interesting fermenting foods.

    They say Dogs should not eat salt so is this ok to give my puppy husky 5 month old thanks

      There really isn’t much salt in the fermented vegetables. This was recommended to me by my holistic vet. However, check with your vet before giving this to your puppy. Chester is 13 1/2 and needs the probiotics in his diet to help him with digestion . Your puppy may not need this so good idea to double check. It is however good for your gut health.       This was recommended to me by my vet for my dog specifically. I have read that it is safe for cats too, however, I would double check with your vet in case your cat has specific needs. Also, I can sneak it in my dogs food but I know cats can be very finicky when it comes to eating. I hope this helps, it is very good for you though! Thanks for watching.

      Hello. Yes, it’s 1 litre or 4 cups of water to 1 tbsp of sea salt. I make this separately and then fill jars with what I need. Saves on a lot of math. Hope this helps and thanks for watching

      If you ferment the cucumbers , then it is the same because you’re promoting the development of good bacteria and preserving nutrients of the vegetable. If you’re using hot brine with vinegar and salt on the cucumbers , then you’re killing the bacteria to preserve the pickles. Not sure if this is what you meant . Thanks for watching.

      I mean pickles are not only made using just cucumber and vinegar. We made pickles using with any vegetables like tomatoes, cabbage, artichoke, cucumber, garlic, carrot etc. and using just rock salt. Vinegar make cabbage darken so adding a piece of lime adds some aroma. It's protective because it has ascorbic acid in it which mean vitamin C. I don't know if you call "pickles" for it, maybe chowchow is right term.
