This is excellent. In fact July 1985 was a sultry month in the SE of England. We enjoyed a great deal of warm sunny weather and a couple of great storms. The heat peaked in the low 30s on the 25th of the month if memory serves me correctly.
20 days after this we had a massive thunderstorm in Ireland on July 25th and 26th in most parts of the country the west of Ireland got very little of it
This was after a warm spell in the SE with 29°C recorded in Southampton the previous day. The next week stayed anticyclonic (dominated by high pressure) & ended with a thundery spell too. The entire month was warm in the SE but dull & wet up north.
They got a tip off from the London Weather Centre 20 minutes before it hit which allowed them to get the covers on just before it started, hence the swift resumption once it had passed.
Yes i have read a story about this and there was a narrow tunnel that thousands of people went under when it rained and it very nearly killed many people in the crush that followed
"putting a roof over Centre Court, maybe this will spur on the conversation"... only took another 25 years ;D
Fantastic blast from the past. Good to see Arthur Ashe.
Great find. To think both men talking are dead now, Arthur Ash and Harry Carpenter

@Gromit9 - I agree this was 100 times worse than the infamous rain delay incident with Sir Cliff. Glad I found this.

I remember that day well. Less than half an hour after the rain stopped the players were back on court playing.

They were more common in the SE when I grew up there during the Seventies and Eighties ' where I live now in North West Wales ' they are pretty rare.
