Y'all remember! Yes, our bodies age but our mind and spirit does not. I don't give an old people's fuck if I'm 56. What sounds good just play it. It's music!
They played at a small venue at my university in 1985 but I didn't go. Still kicking myself for that one. I finally saw them in 2006 but it wasn't quite the same.
I saw them around '91/92 in New Orleans at Tipitina's on a Tuesday night, but they played on the Monday, too, which was aired by Tulane University's radio station and I recorded that one. Gordon read a part of Thomas Mann's Magic Mountain, which he'd been reading on the tour bus. I tried to read the book, but probably needed to be on a tour bus with no other options. ;) Both nights were amazing shows!
Saw them live in 1986, The Mercy Seat. Brilliant concert. Gospel-punk like never heard before: iconic singer, killer drums and bass, and Gordon with his just-learned-to-play style and creepy backing vocals. Forever etched in my mind. I wish I still had the vinyl....
@@MrGiorgioud I recorded it on a cassette tape for my car. Sold most of my LP collection. Still have the tape though, and a deck in my house. Listened to it just a couple months ago. I saw them open up for 10,000 Maniacs around the same time. Natalie Merchant was still with them. They Maniacs were good but the energy from Gordan and the band was unbeatable that night. Gordan just beat the hell out of that guitar didn't he!
I have seen them in Christchurch twice back in early ninetys at the Theatre Royal. Spectaculela .. The Theatre Royal has just opened since a 7.1 mag earth quake and a 6.3 six months later... Feb 2011. Well done to all involved. Hope the boys come back for a Violent concert and make all involved shake . . . Thanks. Wayne..
So I just posted a call on Primus. Gotta post this too. This was the A time of music in the US. Kurt Cobain was just alive and then dead. Johnny cash was alway a god. punk rock concerts were still 5-7 bucks
2:28 Such and underrated guitarist, just amazing! Such a fun band to see live. All kidding aside, I haven't seen this performance since the mid 90's. Thanks for the upload. I may still have this on VHS somewhere, but I suspect the quality would be terrible by now. Oh Dennis Miller, I miss your show.
I seen these guys at the Bob Carpenter Center at the University of Delaware with the Verve Pipe when that song Freshman was still new they were so freaking amazing The Verve Pipe was okay to but the Violent Femmes were so killer
@@LaneganswakeVictor playing the drums was awesome while he was in the band. Got to go backstage & meet Victor & Brian(bassist). Victor helped my girlfriend & I get a ride back from a show in Chicago in 2004, by getting us a ride to our hotel from some of his friends & family backstage. No cooler band..
Is anyone else guiltily smug that thin, rebel and slightly crazy Gordon who the ladies of our youth found insanely hot is now a balding, fat guy with glasses like the rest of us doing county fairs in the Midwest? I loved the Femmes but it is comforting to know that even our heroes get old and need to make a living.
I hate fuckin Dennis Miller but with the official video getting yanked this probably the best version of this song on youtube right now....someone upload the Craig Kilborn performance please! lol
to hell with all of you listening to music online. you should be paying full price for this music. alas, you're circumventing protocol and getting good music cheaply like this. damn.
I haven't seen this in 20 something years. I realized 2 things. Fuck I'm old now and these guys kick ass
that's okay they are old too and they STILL kick ass
@@JNathanielBerkesaw them alive a few months ago. Can confirm you still cannot fuck with the violent femmes
Just saw them live and what a show!
Y'all remember! Yes, our bodies age but our mind and spirit does not. I don't give an old people's fuck if I'm 56. What sounds good just play it. It's music!
Just saw them last year
The Violent Femmes are simply the greatest band ever.
one of*
Disagree, but I do like them.
You're not wrong. I love this band.
The VIOLENT FEMMES are just SO COOL 🎸 They Play music just like if they were some kind of ANGELS
One of my favorite bands of all time
I love the energy of the drummer!
Definitely, shame he left the band.
He's a real stand-up guy.
Was this Victor or Guy? Victor left this same year
I remember watching this the night it aired. The years have not been kind to Gordon's shirt
Better than Victor's vest though
@@treys4490 they were so eccentric though so they were never in style its like their own version of punk lol
The dream of the 90's is alive on youtube.
Fuckin a brother
that's weird i think of them as a 80s band, kind of theirlast gasp in the 90s
Well it's definitely not in Portland anymore.
Dammit that was awesome... how did I get here? Don't know but I'm smiling. Gordon was always so beautiful.
This is sooo dope! Thanks for preserving this on the internet's!!!!!
One of my favorite Femmes songs! And that is saying something!

They played at a small venue at my university in 1985 but I didn't go. Still kicking myself for that one. I finally saw them in 2006 but it wasn't quite the same.
They are still cool live.
Wow! That was fucking fantastic!

This song reminded me of Gordon Gano's Gospel group, yes , Gospel group, "The Mercy Seat"
Fantastic band

The guys sounded very good on this one.....excellent.
Generation X makes the best music hands down
Thank you! I'd argue the boomers did, but as a card-carrying Gen X born in 1968 I'll gladly agree with you...
Thanks, Dave.
I was born too soon AND too late!!!
Very awesome. Great find.

+rattlehonda they are playing in Auckland in March this year///
Au Québec Violent Femmes était le groupe favoris de plusieurs jeunes dans les années 80...et se soir j'aime encore se groupe...32 ans plus tard...
Absolutely love The Beach Boys quote at the end
Damn they look young! I’m old
Me too. Consider it a blessing. Lol
What a cool video.
Saw em in 1992 at oak Mt. In bham al. No record of it
So I just posted a call on Primus.

GRAAAANDEESSSSS
woww
I like American music…best
They did a cover of that Gnarls Barkley song, "Crazy" a while back. It's pretty amazing actually.
They returned the favor after Gnarls Barkley covered Gone Daddy Gone.
these guys high....
god do i love the drummmer hes fantastic
The bass player is the backbone imo. He's playing lead or rhythm and bass at the same time always

Acoustic band....(brings electric guitar). Love this song, though.
17 people don’t like American music.
If someone didn't like it , they couldn't have made the song!! I've loved it for years!!
… whooosh…😂
They didn't know the music was in their soul.
i think last time i saw them was in 07 in pittsburgh ,we tried to hire them for our wedding didnt happen they were already broke up
Ask your spouse to get married again now.
fucking genius
✨✌️🥰✌️✨
4:07 speed drumming
Did you do too many drugs? I did too many drugs.
I’m not sold on the new music…. American music 😢
4:08-4:16 is incredible
They were an awesome band. Where are they now?
Was Adam Sandler's style inspired by The Violent Femmes?
90s clothing lol
If anyone knows of a better base player do tell. cool
Not really, but Matt Freeman of Rancid is up there.
i wouldnt compare them but my other favorite is sebastian steinberg (soul coughing)
Ryan Martinie
I stood at the front of the stage in front of Brian Ritchie once and I was gobsmacked at what he played, totally wondrous stuff.
The singer should be played by Aaron Paul in a movie.
Real music real instruments no little Wayne's back then
Well in actual facy there was a Lil Wayne back then, he was about 10 years old
what does Lil Wayne have to do with this? Sounds like you got an ax to grind against Wayne
When did Farquad learn to play guitar?
still playing music... just not together
playing music together now =)
@@MordecaiWalfish without Victor tho
The best thing about this was everything but Dennis Miller.
I did too many drugs

RinascitaVita nah, it’s just that he gained weight
The guy is a millionaire. Yeah, life caught up with him. But he's still a millionaire.
What a dick comment of no value
Too much American food.

Well nobody is making you fuck him. It takes two to tango.
Never heard that much animosity about Dennis miller. What’s so unlikeable about him?

to hell with all of you listening to music online. you should be paying full price for this music. alas, you're circumventing protocol and getting good music cheaply like this. damn.
Where can you buy this specific live version?
Stuff it . I paid 80$ for concert tickets .this band owes no one any thing but the rest of them owe me big time .
I hate to say it but . . I had the same style of clothes back then too. Gordan had me beat in the dreamy chiseled looks though.
