Because of my 911 experience i lost all interest in listening to police, fire, ambulance & other emergency services. My preference is ham radio listening, marine band & utility listening. Bob, you're my mentor when discussing 9:1 baluns, preselectors, & various wire antennas. I thoroughly enjoy observing & reading about your collection of communications receivers. 73's.

Thank you, Dan. I discovered very early on that the accessories are just as important as the actual receivers. You never know what your receiver is capable of until you maximize the signal quality. Thanks for your comments.
I'm on the north shore of Long island in Suffolk county and I just received my new SDS200 a couple days ago and I love it. I'm going to try to program it for southern Connecticut this weekend
I wonder if the AGC is the issue my 200 has with weak analog signals. The audio cuts and is very choppy when compared to RSSI bars, whereas when I’m listening to P25 trunking systems, it hardly ever burps and is rock solid. Seems analog is quickly being forgotten about anymore.
I’m a Texas Police Officer who does off duty Traffic Control on TxDOT freeways during road construction. I’m trying to mount a SDS200 in my Jotto Console, and I’m not sure what faceplate to mount. Do you have any ideas on how to mount the SDS200 in an Emergency Vehicle (Jotto/Havis etc) Console? Thanks in advance!!
John, the AGC circuit in a receiver is like an audio leveler. Loud signals are reduced to reasonable levels so they don't blast your ears, but also to keep from overdriving subsequent stages of th radio. Low or weak signals are automatically increased to allow the radio to operate normally and (possibly) increase noise refuction.
Excuse me, I see that you understand electronics... a question... can these equipments be freed from frequency? to be able to listen to mobile telephony .. ect .. have you been able to try?
First: that would be illegal in the US. Second: there is no way to decode modern cellphone communication unless you have government backdoors. You might get some meta data using an IMSI catcher. You‘d better be the with the government with such tactics…..that sh*t is very very illegal for regular joe….
the powers that be are scared of you being able to hear there scrambled noise. from a off the shelf unit. but the real threat to them is the guy who can build his own stuff, including the decoding gear. but then they are employed by the cia working in the langley, va. phone hub.
I bet if you sold this rackmount unit, it would be pretty popular. Why would some say that the SDS 100 does a better job on receiving than the SDS 200?
Are there any External Speakers that you would recommend for Vehicle use, and are there any modifications you can do to the External Speaker you recommend?
Here's the schematic of the receiver module. dvbpro.ru/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Rafael_Micro_R836_High_Performance_DTV_Silicon_Tuner_Datasheet.pdf The SDS200 are actually using a R837 as the R836 are obsolite but only difference are additional modes like 8k UHD picture and some audio surround modes in the satellite boxes that the chip are designed to be used in. The front end AGC are "automatic" and have no connections to the outside of the chip and are all handled internally. The IF AGC can be controlled by an outside source. It's operation are pretty much as any other SDR receiver chip that you find in SDR USB dongles, the most common chip are the R820T from the same Rafael company.
I was looking for just this type of mod. Though all i could find as for racks was a 2u rack for housing 2 sds 200 units. Where did you get the single rack

Wouldn't be nice if the SDS200 had an external VGA port just like some of the higher end HF rigs and receivers?
