    It’s fab guys. Superb strategy with the no dig method. I love growing loads of herbs to add flavour to dishes, plenty of disease fighting antioxidants too. Your lush soil will help those beauty’s flourish. What a joy! That chicken sure looked delicious too. XOXO

    We stared a vegetable garden also with the no dig method, and we are having great results. One year later, I can say thicker layer on the cardboard. And make sure you have a good drainage. Maybe Laura wanted to say raised bed? Have a nice week!

    I love Charles Dowding-he has such a relaxing way of speaking. I’m also trying no dig for the first time here in California. I think you guys need to get some good gardening boots (do Canadians also call them wellies?). Then you can just hose them down. Can’t wait to see the garden as it progresses!

    The gardens are going to be wonderful when completed!
    1) The neighbors cattle eagerly await all the deliciousness you are planting for them. HA! My island is over-run with deer and our garden has a fence around it to keep them out otherwise they would eat everything in sight.
    2) Some islands have snake or rodent issues that are not native to the island but introduced through sailing ships. Does Pico? Lava walls make great condos for rats., so just curious (we learned the hard way.)
    3) Off topic, but when is the last time Pico blew its top? Is volcanic activity a part of life in the Azores?
    All those people who spend the big bucks for a cramped condo in Toronto overlooking "majestic" Lake Erie don't know what they're missing. I'm so mesmerized by the view, I don't know how you get any work done. Oh! And the grilled chicken segment inspired us on what's for dinner tonight. Carlos should develop a B-roll and send to the Food Network. Wouldn't that be a fascinating show with the island backdrop? So many locales have been done to death shooting from the Azores is truly unique (a much over-used word but appropriate here.)
    PS- Really enjoy the variety of topics you're covering! Keep it up!

    • @ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552
      @ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We never thought of that; our own show; I do think the Food Network needs fresh authentic shows. You are correct: the Azores would make a really nice eye candy backdrop; as they say.
      definitely
      Pico's last eruption was around 1726; last earthquake to make a bit of damage was in 1998. I see you are aware of Toronto's sardine condo complexes; not for me.
      Thanks for taking the time and comment; take care!

    • @admindesk2760
      @admindesk2760 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552 BTW - If -- IF a show could get an initial run, the exposure would be massive. About a dozen well respected Production companies are always looking for something new. Perhaps it's worth a call to the Dept of Economic Development (or something similar) for a wee bit of seed funding -- call it advertising. Maybe this isn't a great idea after all, as I'd prefer to keep the Azores as a hidden gem not to be discovered by the masses. The number of people seeking a major life change is skyrocketing and your glamping resort couldn't be better timed. Continued good luck!

    How incredible! The chicken looked amazing!! Love you guys. In a typical year, what are the temperature extremes? I hear that the mainland can get really cold in central and northern Portugal. I'm ready to retire there in 7 years.

    • @ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552
      @ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The taste and smell was even better. The summer temperatures usually are between 24 and 28, this winter's average was is between 12 and 18. Portugal mainland does reach extremes in the summer; way over 30 degrees Celsius in the summer. The water this past summer averaged around 21. These are the healthiest levels in our opinion; we love it! Take care!

    You two are awesome OMG! 🤗 You'll be able to grow pretty much anything you want. I think you're in plant hardiness zone 11A or 10B, which means you have an average annual extreme minimum temperature there around 4.4 degrees Celsius, so yeah like it doesn't even freeze but maybe you're high enough up the slope of Pico that you could get a light frost some years. I remember seeing snow on it in one of your previous videos. So exciting to watch you grow things!

  • @gs032009
    @gs032009 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your project in Pico is interesting but the way to go about it is not very clever. Let's see.
    1-Pico is a volcanic island, and as such it has volcanic soil, very fertile! As you can see from the landscape, Carlos and especially Laura, almost everything thrives in the island. Also due to plenty of rainfall. SO buying compost at the market is a complete waste of money and useless, much like pouring sugar on top of icecream!
    2- At 7'00'' you said: « a way of not disturbing the nutrients...and the bugs, it keeps all the nutrients inside...», what??? The nutrients are in the top layer and intermediate layer, and don't require you to 'keep them in', and the bugs, how are they supposed to thrive and digest organic matter if you deprive them of oxygen by covering the top soil with cardboard!!!
    3-Laying cardboard on the ground is tantamount to adding glue, resins, ink, etc, to the soil. Why would you want the vegetables you're going to eat straight out of collecting them to absorb those compounds?
