First I feel he should learn how to play all the neck chords, next learn barre chords in the five positions (CAGED) system. He should also learn how to play the major scales and pentatonic scales in across the fret board. He should learn how to properly transit between chords and also learn different chord arpeggios and power chords. With these, he should learn basic improvisation, skills ,alternate picking etc. Next he can learn the basic 12 bar blues in all keys and learn all the 7th chords. The list is endless
