Watching this as a kid I believed a man could turn into a woman, now I know that's not true.
Yes, they portrayed it very strangely here I think, trying to go for the acceptance angle and put across the idea that Hayley is just like any other woman. Hayley is seen in the soap as a man who has turned into woman when in reality she would just be a feminised man. It’s not very realistic.
