I'm very pale, and I always find that it's much easier to achieve a natural and attractive appearance when contouring with rosy/mauve blush than when using brown/grey toned contouring products. It's hard for me not to just end up looking dirty when I use "traditional" contouring colors... Thanks for the video, WG! 💜

This is always how we did it when I was growing up. I'm 61 years old. Do you recall the models in the Robert Palmer videos? They definitely used blush for definition and plenty of it! That was the look and that look was hot then!

As someone born in 1972, I used to use a 3-colour blush set. There was a main colour for the cheekbones, a slightly lighter version for the highlights, & a slightly darker (than the main) for just in the hollows. We never put powder under the blush. We would dust a light powder OVER to set it (especially in more humid climates). That angled blush works really well for my face shape, & I still use that method when I bother wearing makeup nowadays.
CoverGirl still sells those 3-pan blush kits; I bought one just last week.
@@MyCleverHandle They used to have a plum colour that was perfect for my skin tone, but I haven't seen it in decades.
I adore this kind of look. I love a heavy blush look that angles sharply like that. Just perfect.
I still do my blush like this even though I'm in my 30's. Guess I'm a 80's baby 😂 I have a rounder face so I like to do this. I have to try it with your baking technique Goss 😉
Yes! Me too. My face is very round and me being fat does not help at all lol. So i like doing the angular blush a lot!
I used the same color, lighter one on top and the darker of the same color on bottom . CoverGirl had me doing this in the 80s cheekers

This look sounds like it would be a great companion to bold eyes. Looking forward to trying it, thanks for sharing! I'd love to see a series of this vid, retro styles and methods from other decades. Never would have imagined contouring had changed throughout the ages. I also like being able to be fresh by not following the standard style of lip/contour/etc.
This is how I do my blush before. But now I follow what Wayne's techniques to give me a lifted face. Thanks Wayne God bless everyone.

I’ve done this since the 80s.
Fair skinned with red hair so any contour powders or creams looked like dirt on my face.
I now have silver hair and use rosy pink blush the same way.
Blush and I have a love/hate relationship. I’m an 80’s girl and I still over blush almost every day. Even when I try to under blush I over do it.

This is great, I was doing a similar technique with blush but more on the cheeks rather than a contour. I feel excited to try this new technique for a more natural look 💕🙂

The good ole 80’s ! I was growing up here . I remember seeing these angular looks . Wow ! I’m positive I can do this , going to work with a look like this might raise some eyebrows. I’m almost 50 !
I've been doing this blush style since I first started experimenting with face makeup - contour blush is the only blush that really works for me. It looks amazing and brings a look to life!

I remember using Maybelline, Cover Girl, and Indian Earth to achieve this look. Highlighted with half a can of Aquanette Hairspray! 🙄

Love all of your videos!! You are truly a class act! My godmother passed away a couple of years ago, and her and I would watch your videos! She was in her 80s but was the most beautiful, classy lady! (And she didn’t leave the house without her high quality make up on😂❤) she agreed with all of your techniques! But she is actually who got me into contouring with blusher/ or rouge has she called it instead of bronzers. (Her and I are both fair skinned) and when I would see her with her makeup done I was blown away with how she had sculpted cheekbones with just blush! Never would have thought of that! It’s funny because she had one of the original Bobbi brown makeup coffee table books (I have it to this day) and a lot of what you go over with us is in that book! Loved this video and thinking of my sweet godmother- great memories of going to Sephora and beauty counters with her to shop!! ❤❤

I'm 63, and we used rosy powder blush with Max Factor's Pan Stick makeup in a dark shade for contour. No wonder I had zits!

Taking me back! I still don't use contour. My forehead is good and I have high cheekbones. This is the only way I emphasize my cheeks. Contour always looks like dirt on my face. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Hi Wayne is there is any way to make your cheeks chubby a lil bit with help for blush , other than the apple of cheek's method.
As a teen in the 80's the color was plum, and a much smaller brush, as well as no powder. My parched skin struggled enough as it was.
Updated 80s. Mom would not have put powder under her blush. It was blush on her cheeks & eyelids then out the door rush to work. 😂
And I just remembered that it was a stick of solid blush. No powder for her. 😆

Hi Wayne! I have dark skin and I was given a dark blush to use as my contour shade (Mac Film Noir Powder Blush). You mention that highlighter should overlap with the blush instead of sitting above it like Neapolitan stripes, but is this still the case when you're using very dark blush? Something seems counter-intuitive over trying to make the same area both dark and highlighted, and I'm not sure if it would just come out muddy.
For context, I am a man trying to go for a masculine, subtle contour (something like a "no-makeup" makeup look). I am new to makeup and have found your videos of great help!
Ah, the only way I thought it was meant to be applied. Was allowed by my mum to have a little makeup in the late 70's and then hit my mid to late teens early 80's. It was a glorious explosion of colour and fun.

Yep we have Neapolitan icecream in a tub here in Australia as well. Chocolate vanilla strawberry. Some make-up looks on the cheeks really do look Neapolitan, lol

Looks good....since I'm middle age I don't think I want more sharpness and shadows. I want some youthfulness and softness. Funny young girls want sharpness and definition and we want the opposite. We aren't we ever happy?
It was popular in the '80s because we didn't have bronzer or contour in the general population. At least not in the US. Just stripe that blush up to the Gods and you're good.
I find the Huda beauty to be disappointingly too fragrant as well.
It's mad watching a man with a beard put makeup on🤣
