My dad STILL plays the shit out if this game. He secretly bought a game boy when it first came out, hid it from me and my brother because he knew we’d want to use it all the time, and played it in secret at night and at work on his breaks. Now his old grey brick game boy has a permanent place in his bathroom, and he still plays Radar Mission, Boxxle, and Tetris almost every day.
One of my favorite games as a kid! I even kept it on through the GBA era because of the replay value. I even found a way to keep the AI from finding all your ships: group them all together, side-by-side in a far corner. Works like a charm!
As much as some complain about the number of puzzle games on the Game Boy, I honestly prefer that to an overload of FPS and Sports games on a console. At least with puzzle games, there's more of an emphasis on thought and creativity with them. It doesn't always show, indeed, but the intent is still there. Nonetheless, great vid Jeremy! :D
A ridiculously addictive game, even if it kicks your ass and sticks your face into the mud while you're down. For one thing the music is god-like from the title to music when there's only one ship left to destroy (in game A), the visuals are top notch too. I'm on a pretty big high right now as I finally managed to beat Game B but that mode is just too damn addictive! Mode A is great and I enjoy battleship a lot but the other mode is just so exciting
Good video! I really like Radar Mission. There's one alternative to the Lucky Shot. Instead of a Macross missile barrage, you can sometimes get a single, extra-powerful missile. Nail a ship with it and it'll sink in one hit. Also, the difficulty of the enemy AI is determined by their portrait. You can see how one of them looks like a pushover, one looks competent, and one looks like a bad ass. When it comes to mode B, you might lose your power-ups if you take damage. Shoot the money bags to recover your gear. If you have to choose, the best one to get is speed, then sonar, then torpedoes. Travelling underwater is faster than on the surface, and since the play field is circular, you can head off enemy ships to reach them faster. It's easier to catch them with the speed upgrade, then you can tell their direction of travel at a glance with the sonar. Take out as many as you can in one direction, then switch. Alternatively, you can ignore the ships, hone your dodging skill, and go for the big prize: the enemy sub!
I'm 9 months late to this, but I had to note that, not only will that single extra powerful Lucky Shot take out a ship in one hit, but it will also take out any ships in the squares directly surrounding it. This means if the AI places things poorly enough, you could theoretically wipe out his whole fleet at once. I still have a shaky cell phone video of a time where I took out four ships at once with it, which is easily my favorite thing I've ever done in this game, haha. Definitely one of my favorite GameBoy games.
@@Cetega Of the two types of lucky shots: the one that sinks one ship with a single hit, and the other which is basically five shots at once: target+left up,down & right up+down, i don't know how if better AIs avoid this. (Though that was an incentive to find'em and sink'em later). About the B game, obviously the most powerful bonus was speed, then sonar directionnal, then "twin shot" which was basically useless.
@@TheDplo I suppose I could upload that cell phone video to get a better idea of the single fire lucky shot taking out the target and surrounding ships all at once to get a better idea of what I was referring to. Not great quality, but it explains it well.
You sold this one a bit short, Jeremy. This game is amazing. I’ve played this game endlessly. You can beat both modes, and I done it multiple times. As someone who is chronically terrible at video games I totally feel that this game possibly more than any other truly rewards a dedicated player.
No doubt about it. It probably took me an entire day to finally beat mode B today, I've done mode A before maybe once and am going to try it again! I love Jeremy's videos but I agree with you here, I felt the same way about his Double Dragon review
I quite enjoyed Radar Mission, though I haven’t played the other Battleship games on the GB yet. I had the same problem as you with the 2nd mode, in that I was unable to win a single game. I came close a couple times, but never quite cracked it. Definitely a fun game, and you’re right about the “Nintendo polish” factor. Those little touches help keep the game fun and engaging.
2:06 You are probably aware of this by now, but the enemy commanders represent the difficulty level. If you were playing against the one you selected there, that's the hardest difficulty. I've owned this game since I was a kid, and I still enjoy the heck out of it for some reason. I still periodically fire up the B mode on the 3DS version randomly, but this makes me want to dig out the actual cartridge.
THIS is the game that I was looking for, but I couldn't remember the name. I played this game like crazy when I was a kid!! Especially the secondary mode!

I'm laughing thinking of the tinny splash sound effect coming from a bathroom.
😂
Buy him Pipe Dream as well. Trust me on this!
@@TimBitten solid Gameboy title.
This is truly one of the best stories I’ve read online. Your dad sounds like a great guy. I hope he’s still gaming today.
Dang, this has continually gotten better and better over the past couple of years Jeremy. Well done, once more!

One of the few games I had when I was a kid. Played the heck out of it, and I still think it's pretty good. Fond memories.

You're doing God's work, Jeremy.
Lol

I would play this game for hours!! Mastered the game to many times.

Man. So many memories with this one.
intense music and sound effects on this one
Fairly new subscriber, love the show
I loved this game.
I played this for YEARS on my Game Boy Pocket. To me it felt realy intense. However I could never beat the submarine game.

I forgot that game, Steel Dive, even existed. 3DS is already seven years old as well and that's freaking me out a tad bit.
My fave game. Forgot to mention the black star lucky shots that sink a ship and any adjacent touching ships in one shot as well
Ohhhh parallax scrolling on Gameboy :)
THIS is the game that I was looking for, but I couldn't remember the name. I played this game like crazy when I was a kid!! Especially the secondary mode!
That B game looks pretty cool.
I played this so much when I was a kid. I completely forgot about it.
As a fan of torpedo games, this is one of the best there is
Played this game religiously.
Man, this makes me so want to get a Game Boy right now. lol
The parallax scrolling in this game is pretty impressive. Not gonna lie tho the music isnt as good as Navy blue's.
amazing game
“Radar Mission” sounds like a direct translation from Japanese without any localization, like “Front Mission” or “Cave Story”
I will play radar mission. 😀👍🎮
