- Today I'm showing you how to make Aleppo soap, complete with a recipe with measurement or ready for you to add into a soap calculator. In this cold process soap-making tutorial, I'll take you step by step through the process with lots of detailed explanations.
We actually need to call the soap and Aleppo style soap as the name is protected in a similar way to things like Champagne etc.
Aleppo soap is a product loved for its naturally nourishing qualities and is among the best bar soap for sensitive skin. We are not allowed to make any claims about our soaps other than 'it will get you clean' so I will leave you to research the wonderful benefits of this soap.

Last December I managed to make a small amount of soap using a tiny bit of laurel berry oil I made myself from my own laurel tree and using the olive oil from the farm I am now living on. A whole year before I can try...so worth the wait🤗
I’ve seen a video on TH-cam where they documented Aleppo soap being made and it’s REALLY fascinating how they do it! It’s one of the oldest forms of soap and the Technique used to make it hasn’t really changed in the all the centuries gone by!
I made Aleppo style a couple of years ago and I will probably never make it again. It didn't sell at all and I was definitely not a fan of the smell. Thank you for your video.

I am so lucky I can get Aleppo soaps whenever I want, trust me if I said it's the most luxurious bar of soap ever ! it's just perfect ! it's so amazing and very cleansing very aromatic and makes my skin feels amazing (I have very bad eczema/dry skin)

I have used them also growing up in Lebanon for a while. They are not expensive at all. Personally I do not like them much. But since they sell laurel berry oil so expensive in EU and such, it gives it this luxurious feel. It s actually the opposite in Syria.
What a wonderful soap. It's a cold process Aleppo, which I suppose if you want "authentic" Aleppo, there's an additional step of adding water and a ton of salt, and then slowly boiling out the "pure" soap, letting it float to the top, collecting it, and pouring it. It's effectively a hot process soap with the glycerin stripped away + a super long cure time. I'd be super curious what cold process Aleppo must be like. I imagine it's very gentle.

Just got my 1st order from you this morning Lisa. I ordered Castile as that is what I know and you sent a sample of this with my order. I have skin that HATES a lot of things but this soap is really gentle, I even used it to wash my finished cross stitch that is ready for framing! Not what it is designed for but it worked :)
AW, I'm so pleased you like it, funny you should say the thing about your cross stitch, I had a mark on my carpet a while back, tried quite a few things and they didn't work, then grabbed a little scrap of Aleppo soap and it got the mark out, I was amazed, maybe we've stumbled on a secret use for it.

Aleppo soap is wonderful. I visited Aleppo - and the rest of Syria of course - more than 20 years ago and I brought back some soaps from Aleppo. The other day I found a bar that I had not used. It is now very dark brown and I cut it in half to see the inside. The middle is a beautiful shade of bright green. The soap does not smell of anything and certainly doesn't smell rancid!

Thank you. I made Aleppo style soap once using the stick blender hot process method. It turned out pretty good. I thought it smelled like disinfectant when I first unmoulded it and that the oil itself had a smoky, almost barbecue sauce style smoky aroma about it. I had to warm the oil to get it out of the bottle because it was so thick and then I rinsed the bottle with olive oil so I didn't miss a drop!
Yes, it can be rather thick can't it and I do find that different c=batches can have different smells, but I guess that makes sense as it will be affected by climate and all sorts of things. It can be pretty strong when you unmould it can't it :-)

I made my first Aleppo type soap about 3.5 months ago, I added Hempseed oil, what an interesting aroma it gifted me with for the first week after I cut it haha. I have about 8 ounces of Laurel Berry oil left and suppose I should make another batch :)
Ooh yes, if you have the oil, I'd make the soap, it only gets better with a long cure, seem a shame to have that expensive oil just sitting around

I have yet tried an Alleppo type nor a bastille soap...I have wanted to for years but the crazy cure time keeps me from trying it. Of course if I had just made it way back when the cure time would be over by now wouldn't it LOL - you have inspired me though, I going to give it a go -......Lisa I just heaved a great sigh after writing that 😂 - my zero patience is always my downfall! He, he, excellent news, yes the wait time is a pain. I have both a Castille and an Aleppo coming of a year cure in the next month or so. But if you can make it and then just forget it, it's not too bad. I hope you found some oil. I think Bescented do it at a good price 'over there'

Sorry for the newbie question, but what is the "cleaning agent" of this type of soap, if all it is is basically oil and water?
It needs a year to cure? Wow.. ^^ I thought maybe 6 months, because that's the cure for castille soap, I believe...
I've recently cut my 4th batch of soap (so I'm quite new in this hobby), and this time around it was reaaally soft. (the recipe has a very high olive oil content, so I somewhat expected that) Does c-popping the soap help with that?

I always wanted to make this. That Laurel oil looks divine. I think I will purchase some not just for soap but maybe add it to my scalp oil blend for my scalp issues. I would love to try a bar from you but shipping to USA is brutal these days. It’s a shame.
HI Tracy. I hope you do give it a go. I agree, shipping is quite costly, but often the price of soap here is pretty well half the price that you have to pay in the US, so the overall cost is often similar or even cheaper if you but several bars.

I believe true Aleppo soap is made with a different process, this does get a little brown on the outside eventually

I made some a couple of months ago. The only reason I'm commenting is mine did not turn out green like that at all?
I made it 30% laurel berry oil with olive/rice bran oil. Dunno exactly why it's not green like that. Its more of a grayish beige color but it does still have a woodsy medicinal scent to it from the laurel berry oil.

Lisa, I checked out Aleppo style soap (like your ethics here) and the cost of laurel berry oil was too much for me to make for home use.
I love your video, the loaf being cut the soap looked fabulous and after curing the ready to use bar perfect.
Oh yes, it is super expensive - I tend to buy a big 5kg container at a time, and that sets me back several hundred pounds
I did a google search for ages but nothing came up about storing for so long,so how do you store this soap please? turned out great by the way but you know that song by Tom Jones called Sex Bomb- Sex Bomb,well this should be called Stink Bomb- Stink Bomb 🤣 hope the smell disipitates some what but i am thinking this is your first time making it so maybe you dont know either
I've made it quite a bit, they have a strong smell initially but it does calm down. I store them in slotted bakery trays, so they are protected from dust etc but have good air flow
The Laurel berry oil is basically Bay Leave oil.

Yes, if you dont mind, can you give proper measurements
I have given the 'proper' measurements, it's standard to give a soap recipe in %, the reason for this is that people all have different size soap moulds, if I said the amount in grams or ounces then if your mould was not exactly the same as mine then you would either have too much or not enough soap, so we always use %
I use 40% of laurel berry oil in mine.
What source do you use for your Essential oils? I can't seem to find bulk.
I tend to use Mystic Moments in the UK

It was a complete fail as I tried to give it some fragrance by using food flavouring essence - of course it accelerated like hell - it's not a beauty of a soap, but still very good for use. I still have some left (started the soapmaking over a year ago) :)

Why do we have to keep it for 1 year before starting to use??
Because it will give a better quality non slimy soap, if you have a look at my How to make Castile soap video I go trough the whole year cure process and show why the long cure is important.

Very interesting. When you let it cure for a year, is it out in the open? Or could it be put into a sealed container?
I'm a very beginning soap maker, and I'm nowhere near ready to make soap like this, but it's tempting. And I'm wondering whether I could protect the bars from dust by closing them up, or if they need air circulating around them as part of the curing process.
Thanks Denise, you would need to cure it somewhere that has a good air flow. In fact real Aleppo is poured straight onto floors in buildings and then cut and stacked

No they use laurel leaf oil not the laurel berries oil
Ooh, you may be right, but I'm not 100% sure on that as I've not seen any with Laurel leaf oil. Laurel leaf oil tends to be a type of essential oil, where as laurel berry oil is a liquid oil that would be added as part of the main soaping oils for saponification.

I used to be so ashamed to tell people where I was from because no one even knew a country called Syria existed when I was younger, let alone could find it on the map. And now, decades later, the whole world is making our soap, so much so that I can't ever find laurel berry oil for sale anywhere. Its always out of stock.
AW, that's such a shame, but it's people's own fault if they don't know of a country, you shouldn't be ashamed of it and yes Laurel berry oil can be tricky to source

Aleppo soap is long hot process soap, not CP soap
Yes, the real traditional way is, I do agree, but this is just showing a way that people can make an aleppo style soap
I find hot process soap to be much more drying to the skin than cold process soap… So I will be making the cold process Aleppo style soap…
