Enjoying your reaction to these early episodes, I look forward to watching all 7 seasons with you! The cast and story lines get stronger and stronger with each season, your doing a great job 👍
Picard's reaction to meeting his mother and when she vanished the pain he felt because he essentially lost her again hits differently since my dad passed away.
Seasons 1 and 2 are a bit rough around the edges more often than not but there are many bright spots along the way before the series hits its stride in season 3. I do like that you are finding these first 4 episodes more enjoyable than I did. Not that I wrote them off, but just shows different people find positives others may not see right away. Thank you for taking on these incredible series, TOS, TAS, and now TNG. The best is yet to come!
Courtney, great reactions! I’m probably repeating myself but I just can’t convey how nice it is to see someone watch the Traveller and Wesley episode and give it a fair shake. I am so jaded by decades of internet memes and people ragging on these 2 characters and making hacky jokes like he is a pedo, etc, that if you would have told me I would have felt enjoyment from this episode again, I never would have believed it. You are giving us a gift by making these fresh again. Thank you. Fun fact: Traveller actor was second in line to play Data.
You should see the smile on my face lol Shame on people for viewing their relationship in that type of a light. I saw it as more of a mentor/mentee relationship. I could see that actor playing Data now that you mentioned that fun fact.
When you look at the computer consoles, You have to remember that this episode was created in the 1980s. The idea that computer can provide animations with what's wrong with your engines was not a mainstream idea yet.
I think Wesley gets a bad rap. The writing for him isn't always great, but he's also the oldest child on the Enterprise and naturally wants to hang out and help the crew instead of pursuing childhood interests, so he does seem a bit of a nuisance to the crew at times but it's really not his fault.
Worf is a great character for learning about Klingon culture. He has a unique backstory and as a result he takes great pride in his Klingon heritage, traditions and philosophy. The lore of many of the TOS species gets expanded, evolved and developed in profound ways, yet so many new cultures are still able to make their contributions to the galaxy as well over the course of the series, and other branches of the franchise. It's an anthropologist's / sociologist's dream.
Worf serving as the audience's ambassador to Klingon culture is one of my favorite parts of TNG. The slow trickle of information makes a lot of moments hilarious in hindsight, especially in regards to Klingon dating and anatomy 😉
Court, I’m so glad you appreciate the music! You’ll be richly rewarded with the evolution of music in this series. Great music is an essential part of Trek. 🖖
I love that even season 1 episodes are making you think deeper, which is what Star Trek (for me at least) has always been about, self exploration and seeing other vantage points. I think the thumps up bubble you got at the end is likely from the Mac, are you filming on a Mac? If so look up how to turn off reactions in macOS that should do it.
6:51 Yes. In the conference room, the Constitution TOS Enterprise, A, B, C, D, as well as the CVN-65 aircraft carrier (the boys were playing on its flight deck). Nice catch. Similar to the pictures of the different ships named Enterprise on the rec deck in The Motion Picture.
I love your sway-y hand-gestures while you're saying "leave and venture out and do all the things" (33:25). They make me think of plants swaying under water.
Please understand that all these episodes are just sort of fluff episodes because they're feeling their way forward and flushing out the players backstories. There are far better, deeper And consequential episodes to come in seasons yet to come. For example- by the time of Deep Space 9 the Ferengi walk, talk and act just like you or I. They don't just jump around like advanced apes.
It's neat to see your perspective on these episodes! The Last Outpost was silly, but enjoyable. I have to admit, that even as a tween when this came out, I saw the Ferengi as over the top. The arm waving and such are a bit much. Although I did like the energy whips. I like when sci-fi makes the aliens have unique tech. Reminds me of the energy bolos the Borellian Nomen used in Battlestar Galactica (the original 70s one I mean)
Back in the 90's I went to a Trek convention, and they held an autographed memorabilia auction. A trading card featuring the Traveller signed by the actor went for more money than a card signed by Shatner.
You're doing a spectacular job on this series! I don't normally watch series reactions, because i can't stand most of the series that are reacted to. TOS, TNG, DS9, and Enterprise are a different story. But i haven't found many reactors beside you who can do it justice.
All these years and I never thought about the similarities between Shore Leave and this episode until now! And without spoiing anything, this is just the beginning of Wesley's journey, there a pretty cool payoff down the line
The characterization of the Ferengi will improve over time especially when you move on to the next series. This episode was a very rough introduction to them reportedly the Ferengi were supposed to be the next great enemy of the Federation like the Klingon and Romulans were in the TOS era but most Ferengi by nature are characterized as misogynistic toward their female population so expect more of that as you progress thru the series.
22:19 The guest star Kosinski mispronounced the technobabble: the word was "asymptotically" and he pronounced it "asymptomatically" Was that deliberate - evidence that he didn't know what he was talking about?
Glad that you’re watching the entire series. There are so many seasons that you truly come to appreciate the character development between season one and the later ones. Some of that is intentional. Some of it is due to the fact that they brought in better writers. S1Ep3 is the lowest point in the entire show for me. It’s all up hill from here!
Now the first episodes, from The Naked Now, The Last Outpost. Even Encounter At Farpoint were typical 1st season episodes, except for Q. For the Where No One Has Gone Before episode which was the better episode of all mention, has more what you will see in the 3rd season then season 1 or 2. Don't worry, season 1 and 2 will have a few more, surprises, especially season 1 episode 25, (do NOT look it up, just remember but) Conspiracy. Oh boyyyy. And season 4 again, ohh boyyy.
Court - I really appreciated your take on Wesley and once you learned what happened to Wil Wheaton behind the scenes with his parents it kind of colors certain episodes when you notice tells in Wil's reactions to certain things in episodes.
"Where No One Has Gone Before" is based on an amazing TOS Star Trek novel by Diane Duane called "The Wounded Sky". You should definitely check it out; in my opinion it's the very best Star Trek story ever told in ANY medium.
Hey Court. I haven't even started watching your reactions. Just got thru the short intro. This isn't my 1st time commenting & I'm a subscriber (& a "thumbs up er"). I would assist those affiliated with the military with utilizing their benefits to get their degree. I worked mostly with the Army and Coast Guard.
The Ferengi introduction. They turned out to be more goofy than ferocious. These are the EARLY Ferengi episodes. They didn't quite know what to do with the Ferengi when they introduced them but they ironed it all out later. Welcome to TNG and enjoy the ride.
Hi Courtney! Regarding your pacing, I suggest going fast through the first 2 seasons. Then slowing down for the 3rd and beyond. Don't burn yourself out. Just quick and dirty for the first seasons. And if possible, try not to see the episode titles, they can give away something would enjoy as a surprise. 😄

Wow! Not to spoil anything, but one criticism I had of subsequent ST series was that they didn't revisit more people/aliens that we see in this series, but revisiting these 2 episodes makes me realize that they did, but unfortunately mainly just from this 1st season. It's like when they were looking for ideas for new series, they definitely watched and built off of this 1st season of TNG, but not much from the seasons thereafter. They're all still good series though, and I'm looking forward to seeing you through the ride!

The Ferengi were supposed to be a big enemy for the series, but since they were more sniveling than ferocious, this first appearance is not a good introduction. The Ferengi culture is somewhat "retconned" and developed more fully in other parts of the franchise. They get better.

The first season episodes are a little bit ‘stiff’, the show makers and actors are still finding their feet, but it does improve a lot.
They are also stuck in the most uncomfortable iteration of the uniform... Whoever thought a onesie was a good idea should have been fired😅
