    Deep Purple-Burn
    Black Sabbath-s/t

    Heep-Demons and Wizards

    3. The Who - Who's Next
    4. The Cult - Sonic Temple

    Honorable Mentions:
    11. Bon Jovi - Slippery When Wet
    12. Queen - Greatest Hits (either version will do)
    13. Foreigner - Double Vision
    14. Deep Purple - Machine Head
I decided to go with Heartland because it seems to be the easiest to find out of all Michael Stanley CD's. If you can't find this one, then I'll recommend Street Survivors by Lynyrd Skynyrd as my alternative for #10.

I really got properly introduced to hard rock in the late 80s when I was like 10/11. That was when my brother came home from college with all of his hair metal CDs, and it was listening to those and other bands he was into like AC/DC and Zeppelin and Van Halen that really propelled me into hard rock and metal. Some of the first albums that I ever bought with my own money in 89/90 included Zeppelin IV, Appetite, the first two Boston albums, Van Halen I, and BOC’s Agents of Fortune, all hard rock classics. And then albums I didn’t buy until years later because I was always borrowing them from my brother instead: High & Dry and Pyromania, Pat Benatar’s Crimes of Passion, Zeppelin II, Moving Pictures, and Who’s Next. Some of his CDs I listened to more than he did!

Tell me everything you know about Thin Lizzy - Thunder and Lightning!!!
I recently went back to check out more Thin Lizzy because I only knew the radio hits and this album blew me away!
It was their last album unfortunately and the reviews seemed mixed? but I love it!
I think it's underrated and it would of been interesting to see what would of happened with Thin Lizzy if Phil hadn't died.
Would they have kept going in the almost Thrash Metal style of Thunder and Lightning? would they have kept getting heavier?
I think Thin Lizzy could of gone in so many directions. Definitely one of the bands that I thought was way underrated/forgotten as I've gone back to listen to their back catalogue that I didn't grow up with.

That's a great list, and I'm really glad you chose Appetite for Destruction, as that is a huge example of essential 80's hard rock. As far as Def Leppard goes, I would send newbies to Pyromania before High and Dry, for the same reason you chose Machine Head over In Rock for this list. Pyromania is still pretty hard rocking, but it's got more of their iconic songs. I do agree with Pete's choice for Kiss album, but a good follow up recommendation would definitely be Destroyer. Same thing with Led Zeppelin, with Led Zep II being the logical follow up. There are other great hard rock albums I could mention, but I got a feeling that Pete might include them in some of his other lists.

AWESOME PETE!! i agree with these classic & iconic picks, certainly must have for all newbies! shit, there's 50 more that could be picked along with these-lolol. i agree and am glad you touched on it and find it funny how over time how some albums/bands have somewhat changed from what we thought or knew them to be back in the day to what some have come to be to us as we've aged ,but, also the fact that music has changed as well since those days of our youth, a lot of these were certainly considered heavy metal in every way when we were young, but as music has progressed ,or however one looks at it, over the years with the birth of all the much harder & heavier death, doom, thrash metal etc. some have seemed to have matured or aged more into the hard rock than metal. when i was younger back then, ac/dc was totally heavy, heavy metal and now at my age at 56yo i consider them hard rock, it's all great! and i get it, and to each his own and like you say, there's now right or wrong brother. it's always great to hear your opinions on it Pete and i value them so much my friend as we come from the same era. i just don't dig the music snobs that think there way is the only way and set in stone, i know you get a lot of that. but we get it brother, we dig it! great show Pete!! SOT ROCKS!!! \m/ \m/

Great list. Yeah, Ted Nugent was the definition of hard rock guitar. Way under appreciated. In the '70s, hard to find someone who could match him in bluesy shredding. He was shredding even before there was shredding.
    My list:
    Aerosmith - Rocks
    UFO - Lights out
Ted Nugent - Cat Scratch Fever
    Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak
    The Babys - Head first
    ZZ Top - Tres Hombres
Alice Cooper - Billion dollar babies

@@resistor27 I was 14 in 1977. That's when Cat Scratch Fever came out. They didnt have that term "Heavy Metal" back then when describing bands. Only Rock and Hard Rock, really. The heaviest stuff was called hard rock. Judas Priest Hellbent for leather was probably the first legit heavy metal album. I know some will say early black sabbath. But I don recall anyone calling them heavy metal. The only reference to heavy metal was in born to be wild. But they werent talking about the music. They were referring to the engine of the motorcycle.

Basically you're talking cornerstones. Naturally the '70s will feature prominently, probably to the detriment of other eras. I'd be curious to see you list your 10 cornerstone hard rock records of the past 30(ish) years. Would it include, say, Alice in Chains "Dirt"? Not that you asked, but since it's a record I don't know if you'd consider, but Queens of the Stone Age "Songs for the Deaf" is probably the most influential hard rock record of the past 25 years, and I mean in terms of it being a heavy contemporary influence on contemporary musicians. Many of the notable rock artists I work with cite that band and that record as a modern lodestar. I think that's because QOTSA is a band that found a way to add new elements, texture and style to a genre many thought was exhausted of ideas. One well-known producer I know, who is also a member of an arena-level rock band cites the album as one he steers younger players to, it's a bar-setter. Another Gen X hard rock record that strikes a chord with millennials is Deftones "White Pony." Faith No More probably deserves mention. Soundgarden. Rage Against the Machine. I'd also argue that Metallica's black album is the watershed moment where metal and hard rock became one in the same from a commercial, radio standpoint. Musically, it has more hard rock elements on paper. But sonically it's what initiated and defined heavy metal for the casuals. Ask your average Price Is Right contestant to name a metal song and they'll probably say "Enter Sandman," which is a hard rock song through and through -- riffs, tempo, structure, chorus, production, etc.

Solid list, I have most of those albums on vinyl, need to track down a copy of Montrose. A couple of suggestions with newbies in mind
Led Zeppelin II. Definitely. I have every Led Zep studio album and I can't pick a single favorite. If I could only keep one, it would be The Song Remains The Same, but If I had to pick one for someone not already a fan, it would be Led Zeppelin II
If I wanted to introduce someone to Aerosmith, it would have to be Toys in the Attic. Rocks would be a great follow up album but I think Toys has had more longevity.
I was a huge Kiss fan in my early teens, I still every album up to Creatures Of the Night including the solos, but the only Kiss album anyone really needs is Alive.
A few albums not on your list that any newbie would be happy to acquire:
    Boston - Boston

My intro to hard rock was Foreigner’s debut in 1977. From Feels Like the First Time to Headknocker, Girl on the Moon, Cold as Ice. What an album.

For me it's easy, if I need to recommend (70's) Hard-Rock to Newbie's, I just point them out to the the legendary Live albums from that time. In my opinion there's no better way to taste Hard-Rock on vinyl or CD. Just make a random pick of 10 album out of this list, and you're good for a real treat of essential hard-rock listening!
    MC5 - Kick Out the Jams (1969)
    Iron Butterfly - Live (1970)
    Steppenwolf - Steppenwolf Live (1970)
The Who - Live at Leeds (1970)
Grand Funk Railroad - Live Album (1970)
Jimi Hendrix - Band Of Gypsys (1970)
Humble Pie - Performance: Rockin' the Fillmore (1971)
Deep Purple - Made in Japan (1972)
    Uriah Heep - Live (1973)
Wishbone Ash - Live Dates (1973)
KISS - Alive! (1975) (or Alive II)
Blue Öyster Cult - On Your Feet or on Your Knees (1975)
Led Zeppelin - The Song Remains the Same (1976)
Lynyrd Skynyrd - One More From The Road (1976)
    Rush - All The World’s A Stage (1976)
    Foghat - Live (1977)
    Rainbow - On Stage (1977)
REO Speedwagon - Live: You Get What You Play For (1977)
Alice Cooper - The Alice Cooper Show (1977)
    Aerosmith - Live! Bootleg (1978)
AC/DC - If You Want Blood, You've Got It (1978)
Ted Nugent - Double Live Gonzo! (1978)
    Scorpions - Tokyo Tapes (1978)
Thin Lizzy - Live and Dangerous (1978)
Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush - Live (1978)
Cheap Trick - Cheap Trick At Budokan (1979)
Pat Travers Band - Live! Go for What You Know (1979)
    Queen - Live Killers (1979)
UFO - Strangers in the Night (1979)
Whitesnake - Live.... in the Heart of the City (1980)
    Journey - Captured (1981)
The Michael Schenker Group - One Night at Budokan (1982)
Blackfoot - Highway Song Live (1982)
Boston - Out In The Street (Live 1977) (2022)
*Judas Priest - Unleased in the East (1979)
*This album is an exception for me. It's the best illustration of the difference between hard rock/proto-metal and pure Heavy Metal as we understand it now. (Just compare the studio versions with these ones).

Nice episode. Great to hear Jimi, Aerosmith, Thin Lizzy, and Guns N'Roses get mentioned. Here are a few I would have included:
Lynyrd Skynyrd's debut album - Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd. Got to have it for Free Bird alone! Get the bonus edition that has the wonderful Mr. Banker and Down South Jukin'
    Alice Cooper - Killer
AC/DC - Highway to Hell or Back in Black. (Can see an argument for putting them in heavy metal but think they're more hard rock)
Cinderella - Long Cold Winter. For a less A-list band I'd go for the awesome bluesy rock that Tom Keifer and band created
Bon Jovi - Slippery When Wet. Think Bon Jovi were the entry drug for my generation who were just too young to have been around for the 70s golden era.
And for Def Leppard, I'd definitely suggest Pyromania rather than High n Dry. Feel Def Leppard were like Aerosmith in that they really hit their stride with their 3rd and 4th albums

WOW, good to see someone with some serious smarts...love ALL that B.O.C. stuff still, and especially, CAPTAIN BEYOND!!! Every few days I put on the 1st record and play the drums to it...a timeless masterpiece that's SO underrated. BTW, Ian Gillian's cool, but Rod Evans was the coolest!

Interesting how influential Sabbath, Zeppelin, and Purple are on metal, but so many members of the bands themselves don't see themselves as metal. Sabbath definitely is metal, Zeppelin probably isn't, and Purple almost depends on which record you have. "In Rock" ironically is probably their most metal lol

That's a great list! Reminded me of the music I enjoyed during my formative years in the 70s (born in 1960). You've inspired me to go back and rediscover some of these bands.
