- Live recording September 1981. Vocals, guitar Mark Hallman, vocals, guitar Robert McEntee, Guitar Eric Johnson, Fender Rhodes, organ , grand piano Reese Wynans, Drums Steve Meador, Bass Charles Larkey, Percussion Christopher Dennis, sax, flute, vocals Richard Hardy. Stunning performance.
Typical humble Eric turns to walk away right after he's played his part... he didn't see the writer herself turn and clap at his performance. Oh, and King also an example of humility and true musicianship, recognizing the talent and showing a fellow musician her appreciation, even while it's her show. So many pop artists would be too self-absorbed.
Carole King is Lovely and Classy!! She looks back at Eric to witness his mastery, appreciating his voice in her ensemble.. She's so gracious and regal, nothing more beautiful than appreciation!! She's DOPE!! Eric Johnson, easily one of the greatest musicians alive.. Tone King!!
Wow...After the solo that's the first thing that touched and striked me ...He simply walks away . Priceless moment!!!
Humble or not Eric is still a great guitarist. After some time we all learn to be wise or humble as you put it
The rhythm guitarist's reaction and laugh at 2:56 when Eric busts out that tasty lick is just priceless!!
Wow, you can even hear him so clearly! I love watching live performances for this kind of stuff :D!!
Yes, I was surprised to see that, a great moment, to me, he laughed out of sheer amazement.
Just look at Eric's hair, tooooo funny
I forget the name of the mustache guitarist but if you watch the full concert he's got some pretty awesome licks too
Yep. Came here to say the same. Magic music does that to me too. Haha
Eric johnson is way ahead of his era
this is a proof that you don't need fast shreds to make a good solo. Eric Johnson is such a brilliant musician
He's not exactly playing slow, especially at the very end of the song, but if we were to call it shredding it would indeed be a misnomer. I'd like to call it tasteful speed, or to borrow a phrase from Tuck Andress, "Reckless Precision" (which, by the way, is an amazing record).
@@BondiJames I'd call it mature soloing. His tasteful solos fit into the context and have a meaning.
I heard some fast shreds tho .. clean but still shred-ish
His sound is so instantly recognizable. Not a lot of guitarists can say that.
TRUE ! Willie Nelson comes to mind🤠
So jewish pretty 😍 am completely in love
I used to see Carole King on TV all the time in the 70s. Frequent musical guest. A great talent. Eric does some amazing work on this song.
She rarely made tv appearances the only place she would stop in the 70/89 was the letterman show.
Later in the 90’s we saw her on a variety of tv shows
I am listening to Eric's solo over and over again........
Me too, amazing!
And the fact he was doing right hand pinch harmonics @ 1:48 back in 1981.....he was way ahead of his time
I love how the whole band was excited to hear his solo, and Carole leans back to take in that lick at the end. You could tell they all knew he was something special. What a great moment.
My brother is a phenomenal guitar player who went to see Eric who he loves . He ended getting back stage to talk toa1 Eric for a while . Now every time he comes around to perform my brother goes to see him and Eric invites him backstage. I think we can all tell Eric is a class act. But yes my brother said he's one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet.
Eric Johnson is an absolute dynamo with that guitar!!
eric johnson… pure talent! Genius… what a perfect solo
You could tell Carole was a big fan of Eric's playing from the looks of joy she gives him during this performance.
As a huge fan of both Eric Johnson, and Carole King, I had no idea that this performance existed. What a treat this is! 9 years later, he would release one of the greatest albums ever by a guitar virtuoso.
Right? How the sh*t has this performance existed all these years and I never heard about it. WOW. Ok, now to watch it again.
The entire set was blocked. .I've seen the entire concert /documentary.
This musicality, style, rhythm, overall we too much underrated... I don't know what is going on in Hollywood but this should have millions of millions of views compared to a guy pressing one key on a keyboard and making millions..
Eric Johnson is an amazingly talented guitar player. He is the whole package, a master at both chords and scales. So great to see him playing a Les Paul too!
Jim Kosac have you ever seen the Eric Johnson video of him playing Cliffs of Dover on an SG?
I saw him play in like 2005 right after his signature strat came out and he played a black Les Paul with white binding for the entire show. I think i was 10 or 11 and thought it was weird.
Hitting in with his harp harmonics from the shadows
I had a counselor in rehab who was a big fan of Carole King. With some background info she knew that I played a little guitar and that I liked harder styles of music. We were talking in group and she mentioned Carole and I told her about this album and that One of my favorite guitarists played on it (the normal versions of these songs don't feature Eric). She was amazed that my tastes ranges this far....she was amazed that I even knew who Carole King was!...we were real cool after that.
Good ole EJ burning it down no matter the venue/artist/song :)
I love how she interacts with the band like they are all equals and just hanging out, having a good time. There's none of the ego that is seen so often these days where the artist is "it" and everyone else is just an accessory.
There is nobody as Carole King. She is the one.
He's having a one to one with the guitar
Comedic Gold
I had forgotten about her totally. This was forty years ago.
Eric doing his best Wes Montgomery impersonation.
never heard of carole king but my dad played eric Johnson all the time and searching him is how i found this
You should watch this entire show. It's on TH-cam called Carol King One To One. I knew very little about her and it's a good starting point for that plus the performances are really good. Check it out if you get a chance 🙂
Everything is beautiful !!! Eric Johnson!!!
hermosa cancion la escuche por primea vez en 1980 tenia 20 años y hoy amis 62 años la sigo escuchando excelente musica
God Bless you carole
Wow ! Two of my faves Carole King and Eric Johnson.
Oh I've loved Eric for decades! Recently getting into Carole and really appreciating her talent. Love seeing them in this vid together ❤
Eric Johnson, fantastic.
Great tune. Hearing it in 2024 for the fist time -and with superb performances from the principals.
Carol just loved Eric and for good reason, wonderful solo from a phenomenal guitarist.
Eric Johnson is so good 💯💯
I cant believe I never knew about this until today!! So cool!! EJ and Carole King on the same stage! Would've loved to be there for this!!
I am amazed by Eric Johnson works!! I never knew he played with Carol King
The voice of Carole ... simply beautiful , wonderful , angelic ... something good
There are a lot of awesome guitarists but Eric Johnson is special. I know how Eric Gales felt (another great player) when they played a Jimi Hendrix song together and Eric Gales just stopped playing and was mesmorized by Johnson's playing. He may not be the showest or the very fastest but the tone he gets, the unique sound he gets, that Eric J. is so know for, it's so beautiful1 The guy sounds great on a piano, too.
Eric is playing fast when he wants to, but that is not his main dish i think.
That's the only song I know from her, bc of the Eric solo, but I like her mannerism. She's very enthusiastic and passionate.
Do you hear that? That quality sound in the vocals - no autotune!!!
when the other guitar player is clapping before the tune ends; you know something happened. They all just turn and look at him after....GREAT stuff
God help me, I do love her so
Priceless. A gem by the superb Carole King and Eric's solo gives me goosebumps!
I love Carole King & Eric Johnson. I always thought Carole King & Johnson are each brilliant. So I loved this Johnson.
The joy of talent.
it's an amalgamation of one awesome guitarist and a band stuck in the 70's
Wow. Every GP should see this.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Still sounds like Eric Johnson- even on a Les Paul, on an early 80s TV show sound mix.
There's a lot to unpack here. For one, it's the tail end of disco, hence the Les Paul and that tone. George Benson was red hot at the time, and he did a lot of that harmonic type licks. EJ was or was about to be red hot, after playing on the smash hits of his HS buddy Christopher Cross.
One needs to remember - ZZ Top manager Bill Ham had EJ under contract and kept him off the stage and out of the spotlight for SEVEN YEARS, that's why we didn't hear of him sooner than we did. He did that to a lot of Texas guitar players because he didn't want there to be any other Texas guitar heroes from Texas besides his own Billy Gibbons.
Myself brought me here lol
Probably the best solo I've ever heard in my life.. So from the heart.. Just like the singeress
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS SONG! I HAD A HUGE GRIN ON MY FACE LISTENING TO CAROLE AND THEN ERIC. WHAT BEAUTIES!!!
STUPENDOUS PERFORMANCE -------A CLASSIC FOR YEARS TO COME
Maravilhosa Carole King...😍
Eric looks so young ! he's a marvelous guitar player !
Nathalie Maurice That's because he is young, this was 24 years ago.........
+tim teague 34 years ago...
He was like 27 or 28 here.
Eric just really played a beautiful finale and fade. wicked
This song is special in my live because go back old good times.
Carole is looking so fine 🙂
Love her two-fisted-yet-gentle style on the keyboard
Tremenda combinación!
This mid career album is a gem from King.
Dang, this video is so...1980s. Not hating, its just wild to see and hear this in 2018. Seeing Eric Johnson playing an LP super clean is trippy enough...
Amazing as ever as a song righter and as a singer. An original voice and interpretation even her style as a piano player.

Formidabile Eric Johnson!

TERRIFIC COMBO - ERIC AND CAROLE ------- A CLASSIC FOR THE AGES
Two guys named Eric who should never have stopped playing their Gibsons regardless of the mess that company is in now.
Many people are continually praising Eric (rightfully so) , but he played with some great musicians in their own right too.
Her smile had something fantastic. She was beautiful.
Eric is brilliant!
Eu amo esta música! A Carole King a canta com paixão e ao mesmo tempo com uma delicadeza incrível!💖
Absolutely fabulous - great guitar, very distinctive Carole King piano chops and he raspy voice. Perfect!
I absolutely love this song! 1982 and so many, many memories... Thanks for posting. Greetings from São Paulo, Brazil.
Hell yeah! Love Eric! 👍
Oh Carole by your music I can see through you that you are a very beautiful happy soul and spirit.
please, I mean no offense, but one to one, this is the best of him, and his beautiful fab haircut... love this, thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it. We music lovers are a lucky group.
Essa música me lembra muito as alegrias vividas em 1982.
This lovely song reminds me my childhood. :)
Excellent simply fantastiic very good singer
Fantastic music. EJ's solo starts from around 2:47.
essa musica me trás ótimas lembranças da minha adolescência....tempos felizes anos 80
Isso sim que é música.
just beautifull
Splendid, magnificent, sharp video makes me think that recent release was YESTERDAY
Thank you very much for exhibicionist This incredible Congratulations
what a ya know real music.
Reese Wynans on piano as well.
For those who don't know who he is, he played with Stevie Ray Vaughan in Double Trouble.
His Wes Montgomery style soloing. Watch him in backround doing the koto technique behind the Rhythm player. He rips up on at least one other song on this Album/video show. This was about 1979 or 80.
what a great combo!!
Eric Johnson one more time is awsome....
Excellent wonderful singer really like your music
My favorite song forever.
good bless to you tube i was looking for this song for the las 28 years, today found it
awesome
It was a very Wes Montgomery kind of solo he played! I also love to see him playing as this young of a guy!
@ericgelders you know what i like..is that it appears that after erics solo toward the end, the other guitarist..and then carole (turning around from the piano and looking at eric from the piano) applaud eric, and his solo...and eric kind of shyly steps back away from the spotlight...cool, humble gestures you dont see every day
Goose Bumps ....1981
love Love LOVE This!!!
