Indie dev here! Signing up for the Nintendo Developer Portal itself is pretty easy, but actually getting a dev kit (i.e. the hardware you need to develop for a Nintendo console) is another story, at least for the Nintendo Switch. I applied for a Switch dev kit last year, and the process is pretty rigorous. They ask a ton of questions, have a bunch of rules in place, and from what I've heard, lots of people get turned down.
If that's the case how is it that there are so many shovel ware titles on the eshop? Literally thousands at this point I estimate. Just casually strolling through the platform makes me think they just let anyone on

even if he released it on pc, it would have still been a gamble to get it on steam since it was still completely closed off at the time and he would still need to be vetted by valve. if he could do that, then his best bet was probably to sell it there and offer homebrew kits to get it on the DS on the side, but obviously that's not an ideal situation and isnt even guaranteed. obviously there was also the route of finding a publisher to get it listed _for_ him (ds or otherwise) but that's still not a guarantee. plus it's possible he could've ended up with Nicalis and had his game stolen from him like what happened with Cave Story, which i can't imagine he would have taken well.
It would have been a gamble, but there are indie games like Cave Story which were originally released as freeware but later had a successful commercial release. If your product is good, people will buy it.

There's actually been a lot of really good Kickstarter games, ranging from Hollow Knight to Undertale to Shovel Knight to Wasteland 2 to Pillars of Eternity to The Wonderful 101 multi-console launch to Pathologic 2 to Tabletop Simulator to La-Mulana 2 to A Hat in Time to Factorio to FTL: Faster Than Light, honestly the list goes on & includes some really good stuff. Just it also includes plenty of bad games & games that never released. It's less that Kickstarters don't work, as there's a lot of contrary evidence as a lot of amazing games from the last decade were actually kickstarted, just that it's a uncertain thing.

If you see parallels with templeOS guy, it's because Terry was a diagnosed, untreated schizophrenic as well. And given Bob's likely age (mid-late 20s) and how this started rather tame before descending into madness, he likely began manifesting symptoms sometime after he started developing his game, and the game is just a vehicle for his delusions now. People think he's doing this for attention cause sometimes he seems like he knows what he's doing, I think they're just rare moments of lucidity because this is the early onset of his illness. I'm not trying to make a formal diagnosis cause I'm not a doctor and this is just internet anecdotal evidence, but he shares a lot in common with other verifiably diagnosed schizophrenic internet personalities like templeOS dude and timecube guy so it seems like a reasonable conclusion that there is something similar taking place here.
I can imagine an alternative world where he got help, finished his game, released it to generally positive reviews, and never let his disorder destroy his reputation. It’s quite sad.

This was in 2008, "indie games" as we know them today weren't even a thing yet. There were hobbyists around but people didn't just publish games on their own like they do now. People forget but just a decade ago you couldn't just make a game and publish it, to put a game on a store front you HAD to go through a publisher. Same thing happened with music, not long ago you had to sign with a label to even record your music, nowadays you can just record your music at home and release and album online, and there is a chance people will hear it.

I am both terrified and full of pity for that guy. He had clearly gone off the deep end somewhere and he needed help. But did his friends find him help at all? No! They were basically party to his delusions and just added fuel to it. It's sad really.
It was pretty difficult to release a game on nintendo platforms back in the day. The dev kits were custom little computers that cost way more than the standard systems and you had to do pretty much everything with a command prompt. The nintendo dev portal also wasn't a thing and instead they had a site called "WarioWare" or something and it was pretty terrible. Their guidelines for releasing a game were also extremely vague and hard to follow. Took me years to get a dev account and I had the help of my company so I can sort of understand his frustration. Nowadays, pretty much anyone can release anything on the Switch. The "edev" kit costs about the same as a normal Switch and the main difference is a dev menu app which you can even get installed on a hacked system and you also don't have to mess about with region locks anymore. So crazy stories like this can't really happen these days and we get people releasing a calculator on Switch for $10 instead. So I expect Bob's Game to release on Switch real soon and it'll be the greatest and most ambitious piece of software to ever be gifted to humanity. Just you wait and see.

He types the same way, typing random words in all caps, has beef with big companies like Nintendo who are never going to acknowledge him, he’s made a game that looks like a mediocre ripoff of Pokémon or earthbound and insists it’s the best game ever made. Some context around getting the Nintendo dev kit: back then it wasn't easy to get one. They made it easy only for the Switch, it was even on their marketing about them trying to be developer friendly, remember? You still need to buy it though, and it is the Switch's dev kit, if you want to launch on the DS or Wii U, you need the respective console's dev kit, and I don't know if they updated the policies on getting these ones, but back then they were hard to get and expensive.

You can submit a game to be reviewed by nintendo. You only get the full dev kit as a nintendo approved company(at least thats how it is for consoles that are yet to be released).
I remember catching the online hype of Bob’s Game when it was announced. Back then, it was uncommon to see indie-developed games on actual consoles. I was rooting for him and his game looked charming and full of potential. Sadly, the mysterious/conspiracy viral marketing, while brilliant, took over the actual game. There came a period where he was trolling the internet with his falsified ego. I think he eventually became extremely eccentric even though he was trolling at first. It’s sad really. Had it been released in a timely manner, even if it was on Steam, it would’ve done well. It suffered from Duke Nukem Forever syndrome….so many games outdid what he wanted to make as he was developing it.

even if he released it on pc, it would have still been a gamble to get it on steam since it was still completely closed off at the time and he would still need to be vetted by valve. if he could do that, then his best bet was probably to sell it there and offer homebrew kits to get it on the DS on the side, but obviously that's not an ideal situation and isnt even guaranteed.
obviously there was also the route of finding a publisher to get it listed _for_ him (ds or otherwise) but that's still not a guarantee. plus it's possible he could've ended up with Nicalis and had his game stolen from him like what happened with Cave Story, which i can't imagine he would have taken well.
It would have been a gamble, but there are indie games like Cave Story which were originally released as freeware but later had a successful commercial release. If your product is good, people will buy it.

There's actually been a lot of really good Kickstarter games, ranging from Hollow Knight to Undertale to Shovel Knight to Wasteland 2 to Pillars of Eternity to The Wonderful 101 multi-console launch to Pathologic 2 to Tabletop Simulator to La-Mulana 2 to A Hat in Time to Factorio to FTL: Faster Than Light, honestly the list goes on & includes some really good stuff.
Just it also includes plenty of bad games & games that never released. It's less that Kickstarters don't work, as there's a lot of contrary evidence as a lot of amazing games from the last decade were actually kickstarted, just that it's a uncertain thing.

This was in 2008, "indie games" as we know them today weren't even a thing yet. There were hobbyists around but people didn't just publish games on their own like they do now. People forget but just a decade ago you couldn't just make a game and publish it, to put a game on a store front you HAD to go through a publisher. Same thing happened with music, not long ago you had to sign with a label to even record your music, nowadays you can just record your music at home and release and album online, and there is a chance people will hear it.
Also c'mon, the video is overly dramatic and make it seems like the dude is crazy but in reality it was all a bit. I seen other videos that go more on detail about this and its pretty clear the dude was just trolling.

It was pretty difficult to release a game on nintendo platforms back in the day. The dev kits were custom little computers that cost way more than the standard systems and you had to do pretty much everything with a command prompt. The nintendo dev portal also wasn't a thing and instead they had a site called "WarioWare" or something and it was pretty terrible. Their guidelines for releasing a game were also extremely vague and hard to follow. Took me years to get a dev account and I had the help of my company so I can sort of understand his frustration. Nowadays, pretty much anyone can release anything on the Switch. The "edev" kit costs about the same as a normal Switch and the main difference is a dev menu app which you can even get installed on a hacked system and you also don't have to mess about with region locks anymore. So crazy stories like this can't really happen these days and we get people releasing a calculator on Switch for $10 instead.
So I expect Bob's Game to release on Switch real soon and it'll be the greatest and most ambitious piece of software to ever be gifted to humanity.

Some context around getting the Nintendo dev kit: back then it wasn't easy to get one. They made it easy only for the Switch, it was even on their marketing about them trying to be developer friendly, remember? You still need to buy it though, and it is the Switch's dev kit, if you want to launch on the DS or Wii U, you need the respective console's dev kit, and I don't know if they updated the policies on getting these ones, but back then they were hard to get and expensive.

I remember catching the online hype of Bob’s Game when it was announced. Back then, it was uncommon to see indie-developed games on actual consoles. I was rooting for him and his game looked charming and full of potential. Sadly, the mysterious/conspiracy viral marketing, while brilliant, took over the actual game. There came a period where he was trolling the internet with his falsified ego. I think he eventually became extremely eccentric even though he was trolling at first. It’s sad really. Had it been released in a timely manner, even if it was on Steam, it would’ve done well. It suffered from Duke Nukem Forever syndrome….so many games outdid what he wanted to make as he was developing it.
