It's getting warm outside and boat building get so much easier when it's warm 😊 The hull is coming along and Vera helps out. Hope you'll enjoy 😊
We are a Swedish family who have sailed the world since 2016 while sharing the adventures here on TH-cam. While we are still sailing our main focus now a days is building RAN III, a 50 ft sailboat that we are building from scratch. We post a new episode every Friday so make sure to subscribe and hit the bell to be the first to know when there is a new episode!

Working off ladders on a big hull build is nutz! Stop and build a set of full length scaffolding that allow adjustment as you move upward. Once the hull is sanded, faired, glassed and primed, roll it over and build an entire deck height workspace floor to accommodate the stationary tools necessary to build the deck and interior. You have just cut 20% off your total build labor time.
Plastic nails are inert and can be left in the strip plank layout. They can be sanded or planed just like wood. Great help keeping the planks aligned and minimizing future fairing labor.

Best from scratch new boat build on TH-cam by a very large margin. I love the insertion of family time - it makes it real. I only follow one other build which is a restoration of Tally Ho.

I follow a bunch. Most of them are hot messes. RAN, Magic Carpet, and Sampson (Tally Ho) are the ones I feel actually know what they're doing and why. All 3 will be incredible vessels one day.
The work-life balance is difficult to maintain with a project this size. Vera getting time to explore, create, and play amongst the strongback with her parents is so nice to see.
1/3rd is a tremendous accomplishment. You should be proud. One day you'll be doing projects so tedious you'll wish you had some strips to plank.

Think of how cool it's going to be for Vera to watch these videos when she's 25 or 30. She's going to be able to know her parents in a way that just isn't available to most people.
Incredible to have parents who were capable of building their own boat to live on. Even more incredible to reach adulthood and be able to know them as they were back when they did it. Such a treasure you're creating with this channel.

When I see the love in your family, and the painstaking care with which you are building your dream boat, I can only envision happy sailing for generations to come! Also, the gentle pace of your videos keeps us (maybe just-a-bit- impatient) in step with your peaceful rhythm. I feel you are teaching us the value of a) showing up each day, b) consistently chipping away at a goal as opposed to the all too common inclination of "instant gratification" . What a beautiful life lesson, for us and for Vera!

Great progress guys. Don’t worry that the content may be repetitive, that’s boat building. Consider builders trestles which can adjust in height as you build with full length scaffolding boards so you can walk the length of the hull. Get them sooner rather than work off of ladders which will slow things down. 👍

I have to say two things:
    1. That window in your shed is just piece of marvel. So nice to have natural light and that view! 😍
    2. Your progress is much much faster with the planking that I initially though! Keep it up but don't burn yourself out!

HAHA! I totally feel you, it doesn't matter how many clamps you have, it doesn't matter how many clamps you buy, you always need three times as many as you think, forever. Later, when its hard to bend the planks to glue one on top of the others, try ratcheting straps. 20 of those cheap ones should be enough

Amazing as always. This is no fiberglass kit boat from Vietnam. (No offense to the extraordinarily hardworking MJ team of Jessica & Matt). But, with wood harvested in British Columbia, and fabulous craftsmanship in wood, this is a much more enchanting project. You can smell the fragrant wood. A wooden 50’ footer from scratch on a lovely farm in the south of Sweden with the adorable Vera and a wonderful husband wife team of Johan & Malin really is the gold standard. Maya & Aladino on Magic Carpet are setting an extraordinarily high standard of craftsmanship on a rebuild of a Cape George 36 (and the musical talents of Maya add a unique flavor to a sailing channel). All have become very skilled videographers with the distaff member of each team tackling that task. These are three remarkable couples!

I see people doing this all the time.. they want to build a boat, they manage to get a shed, they start with the frames. They build it into a structure that occupies the space. And then they have no space left to produce things like the strips ;) And it takes them ages before the hull is planked and covered with fiberglass.

Johan - I repairing the rub-rail on my 56 year old Swedish sloop, and needed to piece together some lengths of wood with a scarf joint. Previously, I've built a sloping box to plane the joints to the proper angle. However, today I went to minute 4:24 of the latest episode (348) an saw (no pun intended) how you used a perpendicular fence to allow your sliding miter saw to cut an acute angle. I set up the same and had beautiful scarf joints in a few minutes. Thanks for the idea!

Willpower gets more and more help from pride of accomplishment as things move along! Visual satisfaction will soon join in too when you see the final hull shape! Toddlers drawing boats:
I have often noticed that unlike "terrestrial" kids, yachties ones (including my boys) draw boats with a *keel* !
That's because during their short life, they have mostly seen their family boat being built on the dry. So they know boats do have a keel!
