Earlier this year, I bought a whole set of “vintage” dried watercolor tubes and repurposed them using the first method. I found the process to be unexpectantly satisfying, and some of the colors are even more pigmented than my newer paints. ❤
@@Saturnm0ssliterally they'd have to buy pre 1940's water color paint. You sound like the people who wear arm floaties when a single drop of water hits them
@@ayajade6683 I'd argue that's pretty important information to be aware of in any case when buying old paints, even if coming across a toxic one would be very unlikely
Thank YOU!!! This is the video/info I wanted to see! I knew to cut open and scoop out the paint into "pans." The Gum Arabic trick I totally didn't think of (as long as I've been painting). 😏 I soooo wasn't going to throw away my paint tubes... Thanx again!!!
Dude this is exactly what I need! I have this beautiful violet watercolor paint I got in a boxed giftset, but it had a leak or something because it was hard as a rock when I had gotten around to swatching the paints. Now I really wanna see if I can save the paint with one of these methods! Thank you!
If you have an older tube that you aren't sure if its toxic or not, just wear gloves and a respirator mask. Likely if it is really old the paint inside is likely to be dry and crumbly. You can use the gum arabic to to reconstitute it. Just open the tube, get the paint out onto a flat non-porous surface, and mix in a few drop of gum arabic with a palette knife until its smooth again, put it in a pan, and you're good. Just wear protection
You can also use a tiny bit of honey (humectant and prevents mold to an extent) or vegetable glycerin (humectant) and a little bit of distilled water (don’t use tap water because that usually contains other minerals and things that can make the paint mold more easily) to revive old watercolors. Too much Gum Arabic will make the paint look kind of chunky.
WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!😢😢😢 OMG!!!!!! Do you know how many paints I've thrown away thinking that they're unusable!!!!😢 Man, I wish I knew about this sooner. Thank you so much for this MASSIVE TIP!!!!!
I found an old Like 40(?) Yr old Set of watercolors completly dryed Up and did the First Method and it was awesome. I added a little water to get Them in Smooth and I got about 1 full and a halfpan of schminke watercolors Out of each of the 10 Tubes... I Had leftover Pans (free) and the ten Tubes cost about 2€ so it's the best Deal I ever Made
Your voice is like warm honey ❤ also yesss I’ve been doing this for years, I actually pan some old paints like this that my friends don’t have the patience for and every so often one of them just gives me a bunch of dried tubes and I actually get excited because I find the process very satisfying
I actually have some vintage dried up tubes I found at an antique store :O this is good info to have... though I wonder if I ever want to cut into these relics...
I hear you! So many of the vintage paints contain toxins not allowed today. Even the cadmiums contained a concentration that’s something like 80% more toxic than today’s cadmiums. It’s one thing that I believe is best left alone!
Another method is to get a siringe full of water, fill the tube with the water at various points, then wait for it to do its thing. Bonus points, it's not messy and the paint stays in the tube.
I also did this as a child and teen ..my parents are very well off and I grew up painting as a hobby but I only had the right to ask for new painting and crafting supplies if I ran out of the previous ones and honestly that helped me develop a lot of life skills like this one in the video
Thank you thank you thank you so much... I was so sad because I have almost 20 almost full dried tubes because I was away from painting for a long time. Now I can use them again
My grandfather cleaned out one of my moms make up kits that had a lot of squares and used that for paints. He'd pour it into the little squares and replace the film over the top. Those ones were so much fun!
Mine is fully dried up. By that I meant as hard as rocks, not even gooey like in this video😂 I decided to just put all the rocks in 1 pan and use it just like regular watercolor pan. The pigments are fine so there's no separation or any problem, just the colors are not as bright as it used to. I tried to mull it once with honey but it wasn't a good idea AT ALL. The pigments were just..... Keep separating from the binder. Just prep them with water for a longer time and they will be good to go. Still proud to use it when I was a beginner💁♀️
hi i would like to appreciate this fabulous artist because In her last video of reviving colours but not in the tube ones so i commented -- i thought that it was of tubes as tbe tittle confuses😮 she really had the guys to talk to a person who litrally was in another world with the tittle but she said the tube one video coming soon 😊 i replied an heart for that❤ She really ment her promise so she did post the video ❤
My art teacher told me to put watercolor tubes into boiling water for 1 min and take it out.. It worked 100% of the time. I used to watch my dad do this for me holding the tube by the head using a tong and the metal part dipped in the hot water in the sauce pan. 😊😊😊
21:00 Jeffrey looks like he could be her mom here 😂 I'm surprised that he was satisfied with these camera angle and the light. It was giving over barring mom. It was giving deb for me😅
I saw “pthalo blue” on one of them and was immediately on the verge of tears. The pthalo blue acrylic at my school was basically the only blue I used because of a still life assignment and it was on its last leg the entire time. I swear it was a full on exercise with how hard I had to press my thumbs in to get the paint 😭
my dad always just used a wet brush to get the amount of paint he needed out XD, so that's what i do, bonus is it's easier to store because you arnt worried about the tube getting crushed all over things, because the paints dry.
That's why I always push the paint out of the tube into a pan or bottle lid when I buy a new tube of paint. Extra tip: don't mess around with white paint. Dried titanium dioxide is causing lung cancer.
While me who used to just poke the tube till bottom by a pin first then filled the space of pin created by water and let it sit to soften it up again 😅😅😂😂😂😂
Can you do one video for acrylic tubes if you haven't? 😭 I have a whole bag of paints my sister gave me but they're all dried out. Most of ghe tubes are full tho, so I don't wanna throw them away if I can reactive them
Watercolor tubes don't go bad, they just change into very akwardly packaged pan paints....
Great description! 😂
Can confirm!! I use watercolor tubes from 12 years ago and they're still good as new lmao
Yep 👍 mhm that was what she said or tryed to…….,
My watercolor tubes did that but somehow my acrylics and gouache also did that....idk how to fix it HELP-
@@corruption_jennie for acrylics, your kinda screwed, but gouache is still fixable with a similar( if not the same) technique

That’s awesome! Yes, it’s exciting to repurpose something that seems past its sell by date!
I really hoped you checked to make sure there was no lead or arsenic in them

You can avoid all the mess from gloopy paint by freezing the tube first...it gets hardened, no mess. Easy to remove from tube!
Great idea! But not nearly as fun. 😅

Glad I could help! I think I added a bit too much gum arabic to this one, but it’s always exciting to revive something old. 😊
I have a whole set of old dried paint tubes lying uselessly in my cupboard.
So this video definitely helped😊❤
personally i just warmed the tube up in some warm water then forced a toothpick down there multiple times and i was able to squeeze it out after

@@blackdiamond48 best advice in life. I promise xD
The danger with toxic colours is in the powdered version when it becomes airborne, so I wouldn’t risk it.
@@LeslieStroz Hence me mentioning the respirator :P
Não use goma arábica use mel ou outro diluente, goma arábica deixa aquarela mais opaca e menos fluida .
I have that exact paint from Reeves (the whole set) and I love that blue. Thank you for the video. You're a life saver.
You’re welcome! I had a few of these sets for students and it was exciting to save them. 😊

This is so helpful Leslie, thank you! I didn’t know about the gum arabic trick.

You can also soak it in water for a bit. Thats worked enough for me :)

one of my favorite parts about watercolor paint is I can't dry em out to a point where they're no longer usable
What if it's so dry it's crumbly?
I'm just going to run to Hobby Lobby and get some new paint....

If only there was a way to revive dried acrylic. A while back, one of my blues cracked open and dried up all the paint inside, was solid as a rock.
id pour like 2 drops of water int them, squish it around, wait a bit till it softens
