  • If you do meat rabbits in a colony style rabbitry then I would encourage you to build these rabbit burrows to prevent the rabbits from burrowing on their own. You can find all the necessary items at your local hardware store and it will cost you less than $6 per burrow.

    In Texas, the summers are so hot that rabbits can die quickly from heat. I think this is a phenomenal idea, and I'm going to try it. One of the comments asked if this will work in the summer. I am going to use aquarium thermometers to see what the inside temperature is during the summer. Thank you so much for this great idea!

      Will possibly be moving to Texas. Wondered if you found this works there ? Woukd think if you put 10-12 + inches soil on top it might keep it cooler ?

    Nice video. I got here from the link given in an article about rabbits. Years ago I made a hugel mound on an area of my backyard. On top I put dead black raspberries branches, just to keep them out of the way. Although my yard is fenced a rabbit somehow go in and dug an entrance to the mound. Been in my yard for years (I bet a couple of generations). I once in a while saw babies but not the resident rabbit(s) until last night. This is Minnesota and winters are bad. I noticed my cat trying to get out (impossible) since it's a glass door to the backyard. I thought squirrels that live here. Nope a very big rabbit and in the background a smaller one. Which is why I ended up reading your article. I wanted to know what I could feed them. I threw some cabbage and pieces of carrots. This morning they were gone. Nice to meet them since they have been eating my pea plants for years and the left over cabbage family in winter.

    This is a fantastic idea! I have two pet buns who I will try this for...my question is, do you have any issue with snakes or anything else finding their way into the burrows? I notice your fence would easily allow for snakes to get in. We have lots of copperheads around here, I don't want them moving in.

    I dill holes on the bottom of two buckets for drainage. Then connect a 6” pvc pipe in the middle to connect them an then burry it so I can look in at any point an clean it out without having to unbury The Whole thing.

    I don't eat my rabbits they are part of my family, this idea is amazing for backyard outdoor bunnies. I heard you also need to dig deeper to place gravel underneath buckets so there's no flooding. Will I need gravel to drain out the water accurately or is gravel for just reassurance?

      The best thing would probably be to cut down branches and make a brush pile. Rabbits will naturally seek out places like this to hid and make burrows. Just be warned it will also attract things like snakes as well.

      Yessir. It's a little less than ideal but the burrow isn't very large so you can see everything from the entrance. I am contemplating another design change though that will be even less expensive and more accessible. I'll keep you posted.

      My guess is if the hole was not ground level and raised so rabbit had to climb in then I bet the edge of the plastic would deter shakes
      Where I’m at no snake will eat a rabbit unless it’s a big snake and a baby rabbit

      They worked well. One of our breeding does actually used it to have her first litter. But their instincts were a little too strong and they were digging around and under them to have litters as well. So we moved the colony so that we could "fence" the flooring to prevent them from digging, and I updated the bucket burrows. I think you'll like it. It isn't a detailed description just a general overview. I'll have a detailed video soon. th-cam.com/video/4KcNHRsuyhw/w-d-xo.html

    • @benotslothful4272
      @benotslothful4272  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@harvestblades We used chain link fence for half of the flooring and common bricks for the other half. The bricks worked fine, although we did have a few breeches that needed to be addressed. They literally pulled the bricks out of the dirt, haha. The chain link had a flawless record.

  • @harvestblades
    @harvestblades 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    What are the dimensions of your colony and what do you figure is it's carrying capacity? Also do you provide a burrow for your bucks? I'm in a colder climate so I need some shelter for bucks as well as does.

    • @benotslothful4272
      @benotslothful4272  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      We had a total of 8 bucket burrows. The adults didn't seem to mind fitting 3 in a bucket, and the young ones maybe 10 or more a bucket and less as they grew. We probably had a 200 sq foot colony with anywhere from 10 to 70 rabbits. 70 was too many, but 30 rabbits, about 5 adults and 25 adolences, was fine.
