    Wow!! As an very old timey Estes (and others) enthusiast I'm blown away by your vector control. And how much time and effort and money you put in to this. To solve vector control, I used fins. I used D-12-0's in my outside tubes with a dual stage core. My simple rocket also failed to ignite the center engine. I'm positive that it came down faster than it went up! This was back in the early 80's.

    You probably already know this but the issue you are describing @ 8:11 with the integral part of the PID controller is called windup. There are a few techniques to mitigate this, one of the simpler ones is just to set a maximum contribution limit for the integral control. This is called clamping. There is also a slightly more advanced method called back-calculation where the I contribution is adjusted based on the difference between the output of the controller and the saturated output.

    • @LesNewell
      @LesNewell 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I term windup can be a bitch. If the control loop runs out of authority (or in your case has no authority) I quickly runs out of control. You could work around this by clamping the accumulator at 0 until you fire the motor. Quad copters often do this while they are on the ground.

    • @joshuawfinn
      @joshuawfinn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lex Wilson he's talking sub-2 minute flight times. There's only one scenario that's used for: world speed records. I'm assuming he's trying for Mach 1 with a sub-55 lb r/c airplane.

      Ohh, hmm, little Hobbitses should not get involved with the concerns of the mighty. But you have a big point in saying that solid fuel boosters are, in the end, light (maybe) and hope for the best. They love to burn out the side, or explode or just not work at all.

    • @joshuawfinn
      @joshuawfinn 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mr Prongles the afterburner implies turbine power. He's probably going for Mach 1 with an R/C airplane.

    • @joshuawfinn
      @joshuawfinn 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mr Prongles, afterburners are extremely inefficient, and when you scale them down, the efficiency drops even further. He'll probably be carrying a substantial fuel load just to get 2 minutes. It's basically just dumping fuel straight down the exhaust pipe.

    Beautiful effort! One of my early memory of trying to fly an Estes rocket ( a Trident from the ‘70s ), very, very similar ( in that there are three cylinders ) that I wanted to look good so I spray painted a lot ( made it too heavy ), launched and achieved about the same altitude. The chute deploy pressure came through cutouts from the bottom main booster tube through the three smaller side tubes, to the top center tube. Chutes deployed, but like yours, at 20’ altitude. Thx for the memories. Btw - Yours is more awesome!

    "Hey Joe", (- Jimi Hendrix)
    great video. I love the way you explain, especially the PID part.
    I have a low budget suggestion for controlling if the engine is sucessfully lit on the pad. Maybe you could put 2 electrodes under each engine, put some voltage on them and measure the current. Since flames should contain ions and therefore are plasmatic, they should conduct current if the motor is lit. What do you think?

    • @shaywaterstheone9477
      @shaywaterstheone9477 3 ปีที่แล้ว
