Glad to see you mentioned about the tie with Bangladesh. I teach in a Bangladeshi university and find students from Sierra Leone, flying all the way to study in Bangladesh. Bangladeshi NGOs also have operation in Sierra Leone. Just one clarification regarding Bengali and Bangladeshi. Bengali is the ethnicity and Bengalis live predominantly in Bangladesh, of course, but they can be seen in India, arguably Myanmar, and many other countries as expatriates. On the contrary, Bangladeshi is the term used to mean the people from Bangladesh. In your script you said Bengali a couple of times to mean Bangladeshi. Not a very big mistake (some may feel otherwise though), but I thought, it's good to bring to your notice. Cheers.

Most of the black loyalist lived in New York then the revolution happened and the Brits promised freedom if you fought for them. Most moved to Birchtown, Nova Scotia. Some guy, something Peter kept asking for their own land in Africa. British abolishtionist (forgot his name) who was a navy Capitan helps them sail to their colony of Sierra Leone. They established Freetown and were a port city where drunken sailors would go to spend the night. They sold mainly rum and did very well for themselves.
@Zahin Shahazad empire doing empire things you can only hate so much on empires, as for churchill despite all he did many great things so i still like him
Some Black Americans fought for the British during the US revolutionary war so after the US won they were resettled in Nova Scotia by the British. Later a big group of them moved to Sierra Leone because of bad conditions in Nova Scotia. There are still some of of their ancestors living in Nova Scotia.
As a Sierra Leonean living in the country I found this documentary very educative. A lots of grounds covered in unfolding our history, topography, foods, culture etc. Sierra Leone is a multicultural and diverse society. We do have our challenges as a country but we're mostly defined by our tolerance and love. You're all welcome to Land of Milk and Honey.
I have a nice story with the large butterfly: when I was in elementary school we went to a butterfly house in my city and when I was just standing somewhere to see some of them, one of these gigantic butterfly landed on my shoulder and stayed there for bout 15 min. That thing was bigger than my head, it was really cool.
Thanks so much for such a well researched and information-dense video!. I lived as a child in Salone in the late '80s and early '90s. My family had to pack up when the civil war came to Freetown. On the day the rebels came to Freetown, the principal came in class and said "kids! Surprise! We're taking you for a surprise field trip to the American Embassy! Now! Take your backpack and get to the bus!" ...and that was the last time I set eyes on my beloved school (AISF). We left a few weeks later. Never got to say goodbye to any of my wonderful teachers (Mrs. Hume-Dawson? Ms. Hutton? Mrs. Chiney Coker?) or my best friends. While it was sad for 12-year-old me to leave, I cringe at all the senseless pain and suffering that so many local families and children had to endure for years. I still get teary-eyed when I think of it all, I had a beautiful childhood there and I miss it so much.
Whenever I watch GN videos, I feel small. Like the world is HUGE and there’s so many people. You only really know the people you come in contact with etc. But holy crap.
Not only did Isiah Washington find out he was from Sierra Leone but Black Panther Chadwick Boseman himself found out he was through a dna test may he RIP
I was surprised that I understood it. But I'm also from South Carolina (not Gullah, though, as far as I know), so that may have something to do with it.
Think you've got the wrong National Railway Museum there bud. That's definitely the NRM in York, England. It's a fine museum, but it's not the one you were looking for. 😂
it was a thriving country before all the things you mention I was born there and now live in Europe I have travelled to over 50 countries and been to every continent and Sierra Leone is still on the top of my list. The people and the natural beauty you will not get that anywhere else in the world.

Salone my country 🇸🇱🇸🇱
This is great! My first year of college i had to do a huuuge report on a selected country and mine was Sierra Leone 🇸🇱! Ever since I love learning about them more and more
I started watching since the Barbados episode and its crazy to think that barbs was the only one running the show back then. look at how far they have gotten together. I am so happy for you mate.
What I LOVE about Geography now is they focus on the good things about each country, and makes me so curious to visit those countries.
Facts
Sierra Leone also has the highest IQ average in Africa 🇸🇱🤓
Yes sir

Best part of this video: Art's smile when he talks to his kid
Fun fact I learned is that a good chunk of the krio settlers who went to Sierra Leone were black loyalists from Nova Scotia
So it's like Liberia's 🇱🇷 Canada.
@@marcusbierman5310 I mean if you look on a map its literally on Liberia's northern border so yeah I'd say so
Absolutely! My parents are Sierra Leonean, and my dad’s side came from Nova Scotia.
Been here for like 5 years and its insane how much effort u guys put into these episodes!
I'm so excited to learn more about my country, God bless you that watching and reading this comment and God bless Sierra Leone
My favorite Geography Now episodes are the ones on small, more obscure countries that no ones talks about.
Yes I'm going to enjoy this episode remember Sierra Leone us people from the UK always have your back. ❤️🇸🇱 From the 🇬🇧
Yeah, colonising and robbing a country and people is really ,,having their back"
Times have changed my friend. A lot of people here have regret of what we did with the British empire.
Bogdan10 but forgive don’t forget you forgot the forgive part
@@Xterminater-XI-Ben I'm from UK coming to SL in 2 weeks
@Zahin Shahazad empire doing empire things you can only hate so much on empires, as for churchill despite all he did many great things so i still like him
The pun in the beginning of this video was even more horrendous than usual
Wonderful job explaining the Geography, and those animations always impress me! Can't wait for Singapore!
Hello! I'm Brazilian and I really like the channel. I'm improving my English with your great videos. They are very interesting! Congratulations.👏👏👏
Weren't some the freed black settlers in Sierra Leone actually from Nova Scotia Canada?
Yes
Some Black Americans fought for the British during the US revolutionary war so after the US won they were resettled in Nova Scotia by the British. Later a big group of them moved to Sierra Leone because of bad conditions in Nova Scotia. There are still some of of their ancestors living in Nova Scotia.
Also a group of Jamaican Maroons were deported to Nova Scotia in 1796 and later sent to Sierra Leone.
Yes the first batch was from nova scotia and then the maroons from jamaica
Yes that’s true! My family are Sierra Leonean, and my dad’s maternal side were from Nova Scotia.
I’ve been waiting for Singapore since I started watching like 3 years ago :)
Me too my country
@Alex Croton yes I am
The way they say goodbye "Ta ta" which the same as my aged aunts used in the UK when I was a child. Nice to know it has survived somewhere
Ayyy thanks for this! I'm a British musician from Sierra Leone. ;) LEONE.MON - AT SUNSET WE SERENADE
Hallelujah, finally you moving so fastly & videos are coming fastly.
Thanks Barb! ❤👍
Well crafted episode... actually one of the best episode.
Words: Exist.
Portuguese: Yeah I made that.
Seriously bruh, im a 10 year old darn Brazil kid.
How do i speak english? I wont tell you BRO

I love their creole!! Has some similarities with the creole we speak in my country. Great video by the way !!!
I’m pretty sure right now it’s one of the safest places in africa. So you can definitely return or simply just visit
Bengali is a language of special status in Sierra Leone.... because of the role of Bangladeshi UN peace keepers in that country ❤️🖤
Whenever I watch GN videos, I feel small. Like the world is HUGE and there’s so many people. You only really know the people you come in contact with etc. But holy crap.
Sierra in 2016: Ebola free!

COVID doesn’t work in West Africa luckily
4:19 Small mistake, this is the similarly named "National Railway Museum" in York, UK. you can tell by the lights on the ceiling.
Not only did Isiah Washington find out he was from Sierra Leone but Black Panther Chadwick Boseman himself found out he was through a dna test may he RIP
*straight outta Freetown* that was cool T-shirt
12:47 I thought "Aw Di bodi" means "howdy buddy"......... Apparently it's How is the body!? :0
I was surprised that I understood it. But I'm also from South Carolina (not Gullah, though, as far as I know), so that may have something to do with it.
Thank you for this 🙏🏾♥️
I would love to visit Sierra Leone! Greetings from Malaysia! 🇲🇾
Awesome 😊, thanks for putting us on the map
Damn, Idris Elba lookin smooth for his age. What's the secret man?
Think you've got the wrong National Railway Museum there bud. That's definitely the NRM in York, England. It's a fine museum, but it's not the one you were looking for. 😂
Excited for this video, good to see a more jovial Sierra Leone after the Civil War and Blood Diamonds conflict and the devastating Ebola Virus.
it was a thriving country before all the things you mention I was born there and now live in Europe I have travelled to over 50 countries and been to every continent and Sierra Leone is still on the top of my list. The people and the natural beauty you will not get that anywhere else in the world.
@@lifestylesierraleone76 awesome. I hope to visit Sierra Leone one day 😃

This is the most interesting and exciting video I’ve ever watched. You guys made geography sound so cool. Thanks so much for making this video. The facts are so on point . Feel so proud to be a Sierra Leonean!
Keith was so... eloquent in this episode.
Keith was lookin good ngl
I AM EARLY !! I love when Barby covers African countries they don't get enough recognition
You're shirt/Logo really resemble Sierra Leone flag lol
It also resembles its shape

This is the one time you actually SHOULD type the possessive "your" and you decide to switch it. Why?? Hahaha. Typing "you're" takes MORE effort than just doing what everyone else does!

BENGALI PEOPLE IN SIERRA LEONE 😨😨😨😨😨 WELL EVERY DAY WE LEARN SOMETHING NEW
M ALSO A BENGALI 😅 YOU KNOW JUST IN CASE
There is a Lebanese community in Sierra Leone as well.
Mainly due to Bangladesh army’s role as un peacekeepers. My dad did un peacekeeping mission in liberia. There are Bangladeshis too. Apparently according to the army persons, the people love 🇧🇩 for the role. I am not sure how much of that’s true? Anyone from Sierra Leone?
@@chaink_100 these people are only there because they control the local economy.
@@pietrojenkins6901 I don't dispute that, to be honest.
Everybodysucks Exceptme14 Who, the Lebanese or the Sierra Leoneans?
Lungi means a piece of cloth wear by men It is like a towel type thing wear in place of pants in India
Btw masjid just means mosque , dont worry you dont have to try that hard to pronounce it💀
Ikr even when they pronounce Hassan or Ahmed 😂

True hhh. Also the way justin Trudeau say "muslims" he's trying so much it's cringey.
You should make a channel barbs that’s called “Geography before” and it explains certain empires and civilizations that we’ve had throughout the past few thousands of years and maybe some future places😬
You should start one! Good idea.
I saw that idea in another comment months ago. But I believe “Geography Then” would be a better name.
Really appreciated from Sierra Leone 🇸🇱. Well edited episode 👌💯
8:03 Today Gary is in full form, btw it was a nice entry 😂😆
Yes, our many brave soldiers sacrifice their life for the Sierra Leone Civil War under the UN Peace mission. Love you Sierra Leone 🇸🇱 and Geography Now, and Love from Bangladesh ❤️ 🇧🇩

High we exalt thee, realm of the free;
Great is the love we have for thee;
Firmly united ever we stand,
Singing thy praise, O native land.
We raise up our hearts and our voices on high,
The hills and the valleys re-echo our cry;
Blessing and peace be ever thine own,
Land that we love, our Sierra Leone.
