    Thanks a lot. I agree. I just say it's ALOT, a big number. Trillions anyway, which is why people can abuse their bodies for many years without serious consequences. The body is amazingly resilient. I think what we put into it has a massive effect on our cellular health and how we feel and ultimately how long we may live. What are you studying ?

      His comment in knees also caught me. Many people don't try to establish a run routine or exercise because of bad knees believing that it will worsen their condition. Recent studies suggest that running may actually improve knee health.

    I wish I was born in one of the 'old world' cultures. I absolutely hate modern society and wish I lived in like a small Sicilian town with a simple job and great food, wine, scenery and lifestyle

    When he said isolation kills that broke my heart, thinking of all the elderly ppl we put in homes and our often forgotten. I think its very important to care for our parents and grandparents when they get to that age.

      That’right . In Vietnam , parents live with their eldest son + his wife+ grand children + great grandchildren . An aunt who does not has her own family live , the handicaped. siblings live with them too , until dying day . No old people were abandoned in rest homes , or live on the street ( homeless ) , before 199? There is no rest home .
      The westerners follows selfish individualism .
      today , more and more esternes authors acknowledge that the chinese elderlies live long and healthy thank to their children , grandchidren live with them and take care of them .

      @@renatus20058 : According to Buddhist teaching , we owe our parent our body and feed us until we can earn our living . Imagine if we reborn as an lower animal , thence we have to fend for ourselves since small .
      The scientist discovered there are some animal , after leaving their mother , bring back some food ( prey ) to their mother .

      A lot of people have been taught that in the west and they think its their own thoughts. It's called materialism. It doesn't come naturally, kids don't behave like that. And that's why westerns are generally miserable.

    great talk. very informative.
    I would like to add that Mel Gibson's dad did get a Mesenchymal stem cell transfusion when he was on deaths door in his early 90's and is now still living at 100 with better eye sight. This is because he got injected with day one cells that have the capacity to divide like a 12 year old child.
    This is probably the only treatment that can slow or reverse aging.
    When combining this with a life style that is mostly plant based and also having healthy social structures and a reason to get up in the morning I believe it can be great

    I don't care about living 100+ years. To look and stay young and fresh should be the priority. What use does longevity and money have, if you look old and used?

      You can have more life experiences, though. Sure, you will probably experience your loved ones dying left and right throughout your lifetime, but at the same time, you can contribute to society and experience a lot of life events in your life. I do agree, though, that longevity shouldn't be the main focus - since you don't know when you'll die - but to live a healthy life.

    I am 80 yrs old, been to Costa Rica andsaw you on the plane coming back. I have good health, eat beans, very little meat.........love to hang out with good friends. I can do whatever I want climb towers and love the foods that Costa Rica has...........love life and wish I had moved to CR to stay.............I love the people. For me I think you are safer there than ever i America.

    January 2, 2014. This message from you was one of the best New Year's gifts to be given to anyone! So many myths debunked. Yes we have our genetic limits but also, it is the "quality of live lived" that makes the greatest impact whether in Sardinia or Okinawa or Loma Linda! You are so right that it is lifestyle habits and appreciation of Nature and being calm and enjoying every little thing Nature has to offer, that promotes longevity. I agree with you 100% that our immune systems are what keep things going and if these are damaged, we become sick and our life spans are shortened. I only hope that with science we can learn more how our immune systems work and keep them in top shape. If only people would hear your talk and LISTEN to what you are saying, they would live longer!       You forgot,they pray and they are good people,they don't regret working long hours,walking long hours,and they care for their old people,in so they will be taken care when they grow old also,yes thy are good friends to each other, they have close family ties,that makes them have a happy and longer life.

      I'm 7 years late to this comment, but I am pretty shy as well. I have learned that working in the restaurant industry, particularly in a position where you have to engage with the public, will open you up socially. It is tough at first, but you make friends at work and learn to be more sociable!

      I'm on Starch Solution. I lowered my cholesterol from high to ideal and it has stayed that way for going on 6 years but I'm strict on the diet of course. My weight dropped about 50 lb and has stayed down. If I want to tweak my weight up or down, no problem! The food I choose to eat is awesome, also. The vast majority of people in this country will never realize the healthy foods that taste awesome and their health will pay for it. My Dad's on at least 5 pills and probably more now that he has kidney and prostate issues. #1 risk factor for kidney stones: meat consumption, but there are several other dietary risk factors, and he'll never change. Now he has a catheter. Sounds fun.

    Great video. Jeanne Calmet still holds the official verified longevity record. She lived to about 123. She quit smoking at 117.

      +anne999 It's not so much the plant placed diet as much as what they don't eat, commercial refined carbs and sugars... there is no right thing for all people, everyone's body is different to some agree, and there are people who lived into their hundreds, like my grandmother, who lived to be 103 in good health, sharp mind and no medications and she ate just about everything, we are of Sicilian background, it's where she was born, but she moved here young while pregnant with my dad. Her mom lived to be 99. In reference to 7th Day Adventists what is key with them is no pork, and no shellfish..have you ever studied the people of Hunza Valley??

      The myth about the Hunza Valley was actually debunked, or at least the age of those people can't actually be officially verified. No pork? Altough the other 4 Blue Zones don't eat much meat, when they do it's usually pork. It's the most frequent meat in all Blue Zones, except the 7th Day Adventists. Shellfish is eaten in Ikaria too. And if you look at the Village of Acciaroli in Italy (where there is a HUGE number of centenarians too (google about it), they eat shellfish with some regularity.

    This is the single greatest Ted Talk that exists. This should be a requirement for EVERYONE to see. We can't just keep pretending we're sad and grieving the loss of people who have chronic illness knowing there are SO many prevention factors that we minimize or make fun of when we're young. Think about health now, make it a lifestyle, and you will have not just longevity but greater QUALITY of life!

    As someone who deals with statistics daily, I cant help but see all of the assumptions made to end up with this conclusion. This kind of study is not exclusive to all foods, and will not tell you what foods make you live longer. It tells you about "some" foods and combinations of diets that have made people live longer. There is no way of knowing if these centenarians would have extended or reduced their lifespan if they ate beef liver, for example. Moreover, it kind of ignores genetic heritage, hereditary microbiomes, and assumes that the lack of meat is a reason why they lived longer without any causal evidence. The study is correlation based, not causation based, and focuses on groups and cultures, which means the possibility of hereditary causes are present. Most centenarians didnt eat meat because meat was not easily attainable - not because they thought it was unhealthy and wanted to live long. A topic like longevity involves literally trillions of variables, and because it takes 100 years and hudreds of samples to run a test, its virtually impossible to say that the Bluezones diet is "the best" way to live long. The biggest drawback is that 100 years ago, food was scarce in most parts of the world. People didnt have a choice in what to eat, so the chances of potentially different diets showing up as bluezones is low. I dont discount the study's value, but i think we should still learn about foods based on their effects on our bodies seperately, rather than disregard anything that the Bluezones didnt eat like its some kind of rule. In 100 more years, with our modern age and abundance of foods, we might see radically different diets showing up as new Bluezones. And i think if you collected data based on everyone who lived longer than 100 years "without" looking for bluezones, you might get different results since the chances of hereditary interference would be lower

      The China Study was the largest study examining diet its correlations with disease and this study was scientifically compelling showing a largely whole food plant based diet was linked to less disease. Correlative studies are what we have for large populations over a lifetime we can’t put people in a lab for their lifetimes

    I grew up in Riverside near Loma Linda and shopped in the 7th Day Adventist shops. I was the healthiest athlete (before leaving for college)! I'm now on a program with Mary-Ann Shearer to get my health back on a whole foods plant based diet . . .

    A good talk, and Buettner's surveys of the Blue Zones are corroborated by evidence from the peer-reviewed medical literature, which is consistent in finding that a mostly or fully plant-based diet rich in healthy sources of protein such as legumes/beans and nuts is beneficial for health.

      I ran avross Gallup's well-being index. Not the perfect study but it seemed to be instructive. It seems to be aa combination of culture, low density and clean foods. Could glyphosate, chemtrails, overeating, chemtrails, Wifi, stress, being enslaved to corporations and pasteurized, GMO foods possibly top pharmaceutical and OTC drug consumption for making us ill. Oh yes, maybe replacing Facebook and Instragram with nature walks with friends. Or I can just follow these lectures. LOL

    I found the Netflix documentary very light on hard data and lacked any depth. It even failed to mention other things that the centurions do or dont do, such as how much television do they watch per day? Do they ever eat ultra processed foods? Do they eat any desserts and how often? What jobs did they have when they were younger? Do they smoke? Do they drink? How much sunshine are they exposed to? etc. The documentary was also biased regarding vegetarianism. Many claim that meat is actually a large part of all the diets, with rhe exception of the community in the US.

    I don't understand why people are so obsessed with longevity. I mean, I get it, some have projects in their lives that they want to complete, like you're raising children and want to see them off into adulthood, or you're writing a book and want to see it published and acclaimed. Still some are simply living such a good life they naturally don't want it to end. But for most people who are screwed up mentally and YET want to live longer? - don't get it. And anyway, what happend to the planet being overcrowded? Woulnd't it be more useful to teach people to live a happy and full life until they're 50 and then die peacefully (by this time, they are likely to have had children and grandchildren, so their evolutionary purpose is fulfilled)?

      First of all, I don't know what rate or percentage of people have grandkids at 50 but I'm willing to bet that they are not that much. Anyways, longevity is not completely useless as people think these days. I admit that a lot of people (and by that I mean a LOT) who are screwed up mentally (or physically) who do get to live long lives are less than satisfied. Maybe that's why people don't want to live long lives because they're concerned that they'll be prone to so many diseases that come along the way. But let's not forget, the people in blue zones who lived (or are still living) long lives are at least at peace with themselves, if not happy. They have a well-thriving community and a decent lifestyle that contributes to their longevity. They are not suddenly making the change to these practices, they have been doing it for ages. And these people do get to die peacefully, as mentioned in the video.
